Variant versions of SLEEPER   Message List

Just picked up MGM's region 2 (UK) disc of SLEEPER. While comparing
it with a version I taped off BBC2 some 20 years ago, I noticed a
very curious difference, which occurs just after Woody Allen and
Diane Keaton break into a deserted house. On the DVD, between 49m 9s
and 50m 5s, immediately after a shot of Keaton in the bath, there is
a scene in which we see Allen shaving - his reflection keeps shifting
out of synch with his actual movements, and is eventually replaced
with the reflection of a woman (who is also shaving).

The BBC version eliminates this entire sequence, replacing it with a
somewhat longer (1m 45s) sequence showing Allen and Keaton sitting at
a dinner table. We see Allen eating in various sexually suggestive
ways (obviously intended as a parody of TOM JONES), performing a card
trick and eating a candle. The scene ends with Allen's sleeve
catching fire.

Intriguingly, both versions credit Jessica Rains (daughter of Claude)
as "Woman in the Mirror".

I'm informed that the American Region 1 disc also includes the
shaving scene.

Does anyone have any old VHS releases of this film? If so, I'd
greatly appreciate it if they could have a look at them and let me
know which of these scenes is contained in which release.

Note: if you are looking at an NTSC tape, the scene will appear a
little later, beginning approximately 51 minutes in.
