Hi Alesha! Val's competition is Vincent Ventresca. All you have to
do to vote is post on the message board that you're voting for Val!
Then you can check out the competition in our photo album section ...
the albums are called HOTM - Contestant #1 and #2. We've already had
both Matt and Ben in the competitions ... Matt lost and Ben won ... I
don't remember who they were going against ... it was during our
first year. If you'd like to check out our previous winners you can
see them at http://www.geocities.com/ysts_hottie_heaven

Take care!

Hi!! You have to post your vote on the message board. For some
reason your email went to the members individually, but not the
board. Would you mind doing it again ... and this time directly on
the board?? Thanks!!

BAD PEPSI!!!
Help Save Horses Form Imminent Danger
[from the PETA website]
http://peta.org/alert/automation/AlertItem.asp?id=506
---------------------------------------------

The Omak Suicide Race, part of the Omak Stampede held
in Omak, Whashington, is an extreme form of horse
racing that has resulted in numerous animal injuries
and deaths. With a 120-foot running start, as many as
20 riders sent their horses plunging 210 feet
downhill, at a slope that the stampede organizers have
boasted is an "almost Vertical...62-degree angle,"into
the Okanogan River below. Oftentimes, horses end up
tumbling down the steepdrop as a result of a slip or a
collision with other horses. Horses have been
euthanized after suffering broken legs, necks,
shoulders, pelvic bones, and knees, and some have even
drowned.

Desite the years of tragic deaths and public outcry,
PEPSI has refused to withdraw its sponsorship of the
horrifically cruel race. Please contact Pepsi
officials to let them know that such egregious cruelty
is not tolerable and that you will boycott their
product untill they disassociate themselves with the
Okam Suicide Race and the Omak Stampede. Point out
that the Coco-cola company, sears, walmart, wrangler,
and other large corporations have pulled their
sponsorship after learning of the cruelty inherent in
the race:

Please send a copy of your letter to Pepsi's
president, Dawn Hudson.

Finally, please CONTACT the Mayor of Omak to ask that
the city end this tradition of cruelty:

TELL RENO OFFICIALS TO SAY "NO" TO RUNNING OF THE
BULLS

Peta = People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals:
http://www.peta.org/alert/automation/AlertItem.asp?id=547

The promoter of an event after the cruel Running of
the Bulls held annually in Pamplona, Spain, will be
meeting with Reno officials in the coming weeks in
hopes of gaining financial support to bring the event
to Reno.

The animals used in these events are subjected to
stress, fear, and the potential for serious injury.
The Pamplona event is condemned both for its inherent
cruelty and because the Bulls are usually taken to the
ring and slaughtered the very same day.

Thanks. Nah he wasn't too bouncy. He just sped up going down this
small hill and I yanked back on the reins and he slipped and he
smashed the back of his head into mine and caught me off guard then
I fell to the side and he smashed his head against mine again so I
just let go and fell on the ground. It turns out my shoulder might
either be chipped or I might have a torn rotator cuff. The horse
belongs to my coach. His name is Manny, he's a good horse. Nah, he
stood watching me, so I'm sure he wasn't hurt. While I was grooming
him afterwards he kept turning and looking at me and touching me
with his nose. So I don't think he meant to do it. He's a chestnut
color, I think a thoroughbred. He's a good boy though.

Subject: Re: Hello everybody, It's Alixzandria from Sicily

Ciao Titti!  {Hello All}  Thanks Rebecca for the very nice welcome!  :-)  I've traveled throughout Catania.  I am in a similar situation, my Dad's Family is sicilian and he grew up in Napoli and last November I traveled with him to visited his brothers and sisters for the first time in my life. I am also in love with the culture, the history, and am so proud of my heritage.  My Sicilian sangue is mostly Maltese & North African w/perhaps some Norman thrown in for good measure and for my light skinned blond fairness. My last name in Sicilian means 'Snake Charmer', 'Priest' or 'Witch' and my family is said to be a remaining line of  i beati paoli.

Yes the ethnic backround of the sicilian people varies, in short or long, however this turns out, lol : The ethnic roots of the sicilian people are a complete mess :)  In the ancient times, there were the cartaginians (who were ethnically semitics, being desendants of the phoenixes, from Lebanon) on the western caosts, greeks mostly on the eastern coasts, and indigenous people in the middle.

Then Romans colonized the island.  After the end of the Western Roman Empire, some barbarian people stayed some time, but soon the island was reconquered to the romanity by the still alive Eastern Roman Empire, the "byzantines".  Byzantines spoke greek, so Sicily returned, to some extent, to speak greek.  Most of the sicilian words of greek origin did not come from the original greek colonization, but from the byzantine re-colonization of this period.

The arabs conquered Sicily, and lots of them colonized it. Their influence is visible in most of the geographical names.  Then Normans (from scandinavia!) took the island, and then the germans (Frederick II the Great was born in Palermo!).  Anyway, the presence of blond people with blue eyes in Sicily is probably due to normans, more than to germans. (but they are less than arabian-looking people)

Then Sicily became french (some dialectal words come from the french language; for example, the sicilian "racina" reminds the french "racine").

After that, sicily became spanish.  Spanish domination was very long, and even if there was no colinization, the sicilian dialect took much from spanish. An interesting (and most unknown) fact: in middle sicily there is a little town, Piazza Armerina, whose dialect is completely different from any other sicilian dialect, and resembles lombard dialect! The reason is that town and its nieghborhood was colonized by Lombard farmers in two separate times: under Frederick II, and under the Spanish domination. Both Frederick and the spanish emperor ruled over Lombardy other than Sicily, and both decided that it was a pity that central sicily had so few inhabitants (the country was not cultivated enough) so, Frederick forced thousands of Lombard farmers to leave their houses to go to Sicily, while the spanish government gave tax incentives. Sorry for my english; I hope you found it interesting.

Your beach house on the island doesn't sound shabby. :-)  I would really like to visit New York as well, I hear so much about it that it would be nice to visit. I've never been to the states.  I should like to see the cloisters in Manhattan and The Society of Creative Anachronism fairs. I love them. COOL!  I did not know Val Kilmer enjoyed this as a hobbie. He would be beautiful as King Arthur on a horse dressed in Armour ready to battle in the games. COOL!  What does he do in T.S.C.A.? Tell me more about him. What games do you play with them?

You are proud? We are all proud. Italians' rule!  :-) I have a mafia fetish. shh! don't tell anyone ;-) and I have one new puppy too. He's a terrier. He bites and pees/poops all the time, I really love my lil boy and thankful that I got him instead of any other puppies...:-)  Grazie for talking to me. Alixzandria :-)

Ciao Alixzandria. 3:] I'm Rebecca. I was reading your
posts and wanted to say hi. I'm not from Italy, but I
am an Italian-American. A short story, my mom was born
in Catania. she is sicilian and parts-Romanian so I
have very light skin and have been told I look greek.
The know the ethnic backround of the sicilian people
varies a great deal. Some are Arabian, Germanic and
spanish. My mom moved out here in her twenties but her
family remains in Catania. She has been to Palmero,
Messina, all along the meditarranian coast, and says
the beauty of the history is absolutely mesmerizing.
I hope to travel with her someday to meet the rest of
my family.
I live on boriiiing long Island.....on the beach in
the Hamptons, not too shabby a lifestyle living on the
beach, but can get boring > might be because I get
tired of looking at the same surroundings everyday > I
try to travel as much as possible. When work doesn't
interfere with my weekend plans I drive to New York
City every now and then. one point of interest is the
Metropolitan museum's Cloisters in Manhattan. They
deal with works from medieval Europe. They have the
unicorn tapestries and parts of old medieval buildings
built into the actual structure of the cloisters so
you get a real good feel for the history. A good place
to take a tour now that I've decided to further my
education in European history. They hold a medieval
fair on their grounds where I first encountered and
joined up with The Society of Creative Anachronism. I
have yet to participate (in full costume) in one of
their re-enactments but I do try to attend all those
shakespearian 17th century fairs. they play armoured
combat games, archery, weapon throwing, they have
equestrian activities..becoming a Fun Fun hobby of
mine. Little did I know, at the time I became
involved; The society of Creative Anachronism is an
interest of MR.V. ;)  ..could you imagine Val dressed
as Hamlet? *or* King Arthur? ..HAD TO include val in
this post..juss keepin' it Pithy! ;) ..who wrote that
anyway? I get lost among all of our posts..we all,
always write too much.
so anyway, Ciao and I love your country/culture! :)

Your community is FAB.

I haven't seen all of them.  I don't know

Ciao Kara. :-) sorry you fell off the horse. Manny sounds like a sweet boy. I love animals and always wanted a horse, they are very expensive to care for. I got a new puppy instead and I love my lil boy. I hope your shoulder isn't terribly damaged and heals quickly.  Alixzandria  :-)

  Kara <kluvshans@...>

Val Kilmer Plants 20 millionth Tree for the Global Releaf program in Los Alamos

Val Kilmer planted a sawtooth Oak Wednesday at Ashley Pond in Los Alamos. Global ReLeaf earlier had donated 5,000 trees residents of the city ravaged by the Cerro Grande Fire in 2000.

Kilmer, whose web site lists the distant relationship with New Jersey born poet Alfred Joyce Kilmer, read TREES at the event here Wednesday.

"I think that I shall never see a poem so lovely as a tree, " it begins, concluding: "Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree."

Val Kilmer has also branched out into poetry.

Kilmer, who published a volume of poetry in 1987 called MY EDENS AFTER BURNS, encouraged people not to buy "plastic" presents but to buy trees instead.

Rain fell during the ceremony, adding nature's contribution to the planting, as Kilmer and Los Alamos Extension Master Gardeners marked the milestone.

Kilmer owns a ranch near Pecos.

Rick Crouse, senior Vice President of development for American Forests, remarked that the organization plants few trees.

"It's our partners that have planted 19,999,999, trees," he said.

The consevation group was established in 1920.

Actor Val Kilmer joins American Forests to reach a tree Planting Milestone
20 Millionth Tree planted in Los Alamos, New Mexico

Los Alamos, New Mexico (september 18, 2002) -Actor Val Kilmer will help American Forest, the nation's oldest citizens nonprofits conservation organization, plant its 20 millionth Global ReLeaf tree at 10:30 AM on September 18 at Ashley Pond in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Global ReLeaf tree planting helps restore ecosystems that have suffered environmental damage.  In 2000, American Forests, along with the United States Forest Service specialty retail Eddie Bauer, introduced Wildfire ReLeaf, an action and education initiative that aims the Global Releaf restoration message squarely at repairing damage from catastrophic wildfire.  This 20 millionth tree celebrates American Forests Global ReLeaf restoration work in over 500 projects in the U.S. and around the world and represents the ongoing wildfire restoration efforts here in Los Alamos and throughout the United States.

"we're pleased the MR. Kilmer is helping American Forests to bring national at Wildfire ReLeaf restoration work," said Deborah Gangloff, Executive Director of American Forest. "And we want to thank our partners, the forest service, and Eddie Bauer for helping make this work possible."

Wildfire ReLeaf had been made possible with the help of many AMERICAN FORESTS community partners, such as tree New Mexico, Los Alamos Master Gardeners, Eddie Baurer, and the U.S. Forest Service. Over 3 million trees have been planted in damaged by wildfire. Fire dependent species such as longleaf pine are planted to reduce the risk of unnatural catastrophic wildfire.

Eddie Bauer and its customers have been connected to the American outdoors since 1920 and we are pleased to support American Forests' efforts to preserve and restore the great American landscape, "said Engle Saez, enior Vice President & Chief Marketing.

Since Los Alamos, millions of acres have burned across the U.S., nearly 6.5 million this year alone. That level of destruction has created a need for private support for vital restoration work.  Many fires have burned so intensely that the natural regeneration capacity of the ecosystems has been damaged, making the susceptible to erosion and invasive species such as cheat grass.  Planting native trees in ecologically sound projects will help restore forest ecosystems by reducing the risk of additional damage while accelerating regeneration.  Trees and other vegetation will stabilize hillsides, reduce erosion, protect water quality and provide habitat for threatened fish and wildlife species while creating local jobs and infrastructure important for the long-term health of forest ecosystems and communities.

"The Forest Service is honored to be a pertner with American Forests and the wildfires ReLeaf program," said Joel Holtrop, U.S. Forest Service's Deputy Chief of state and private Forestry. "Funded (the partnership) by the National Fire Plan, the agency is advancing the restoration and rehibilitation component of the Fire Plan through partnership."

###
Founded in 1875, American Forests is the oldest national nonprofit citizen conservation organization. America Forest is a world leader in planting trees for environmental restoration, a pioneer in the and practice of urban forestry, and a primary communicator of the benits of trees and forests. A forest is on the World Wide Web at http://www.americanforest.org
