Dawn French delves into the world of women in comedy
In a fascinating new series, Dawn French delves into the strangely
uncharted and neglected world of women in comedy. The series features
one-to-one interviews and archive footage, with Dawn speaking to the
most influential female figures in British and American comedy; her
peers, influences and inspirations old and new. From Kathy Burke to
Catherine Tate, Tracey Ullman to Victoria Wood and Joan Rivers to
Sandra Bernhard, Dawn French's Girls Who Do Comedy explores the women
behind the laughter, discovering what makes them tick and asking
whether comedy is a proper job.
In the first programme, Dawn explores the childhood experiences of the
female comic alumni, discovering who the class clowns were and how
Catherine Tate and Linda Smith turned to comedy to beat the bullies.
Ruby Wax reveals that being funny at school meant you were a loser,
while Whoopi Goldberg didn't see herself as funny but just plain
weird! Other revelations include Kathy Burke's ability to fart on
demand and how jokes can buy friends!
The series features contributions from Catherine Tate, Julie Walters,
Victoria Wood, Sandra Bernhard, Kathy Burke, Eleanor Bron, Laura
Solon, Meera Syal, Jo Brand, Phyllis Diller, Jenny Éclair, Miriam
Margolyes, Jessica Stevenson, Linda Smith, Tracey Ullman, Whoopi
Goldberg, Miss Piggy, Rita Rudner, Joan Rivers, Sarah Silverman, Ruby
Wax, Denise Caffey, Kathy & Mo, Penny Marshall, Wanda Sykes, Jennifer
Saunders, Lisa Tarbuck, Mel & Sue, Gina Yashere, Helen Ledera, Sheila

Dawn French's Girls Who Do: Comedy delves into the uncharted and
neglected world of women in comedy, exploring the women behind the
laughter. The series features one-to-one interviews and archive
footage, with Dawn speaking to the most influential female figures in
British and American comedy.
In the second programme of the series, Dawn explores the relationship
between comedy and beauty. She discovers whether her fellow
comediennes have ever used their wit to impress a man. Jenny Éclair
believes nobody wants to be seen as a "lady clown", while Phyllis
Diller says she only gained male attention after she had her facelift.
Dawn French thinks that when it comes to beauty, you can't top being
funny and confident. But Joan Rivers disagrees: "You can top beauty,
as long as you've got a good plastic surgeon." There also seems to be
a general consensus that men don't like women to be funnier than them.
However, Dawn has the ideal solution – marry a comedian!
