For anyone planning on attending the Women of Voyager convention in
Cleveland there is information on makeitsoproductions website about a
pre-convention fan get-together on Friday evening.
http://www.makeitsoproductions.com/stevents.html
Also for anyone attending this con, or any others that Kate is
scheduled for, please feel free to join the ClevelandCon group if
you'd like to "talk" to other people who will be attending.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ClevelandCon
Entertainment Weekly Magazine lists Kate as a guest on CBS's Craig
Kilborn show next Friday night. This is a late-night show so that
would be 5/18-19. TV Guide On-Line doesn't list her as a guest and the
website for Craig Kilborn doesn't list next week's guests yet. Better
to be safe and tape if she doesn't appear than to miss it if she is a
guest. <G>
Besides being on the cover of the US TV Guide, Kate as Janeway is also
on the cover of the Canadian TV Guide. Since the article doesn't
mention a lot about Kate I thought I'd send it to the list instead of
putting it on the site. Thanks to a Totally Kate contributor for
typing it.

The Final Flight of Star Trek: Voyager
Has it been seven years already? How time flies. Star Trek's fourth
series comes to a close this
week as Capt. Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) finally gets her crew
home... or does she?
The ultimate fate of Voyager - do they make it back to Earth or not?
– has been a hotly
debated topic among fans since the show launched in 1995.
While Mulgrew has said that she thinks "it's time to land" Voyager,
the show head honcho,
producer Rick Berman, says that there's more to the series' finale
than simply getting back to
Earth. "Resolving the series has a great deal more to it than just the
question of whether or not
the ship gets home," he told TV critics recently. "To boil it down to
a simple question like that is
unfair to what we're hoping to accomplish in the final two hour
episode.
While the outcome of the finale, titled "Endgame", is a closely
guarded secret, a few details have
emerged in recent weeks. We know the narrative will jump back and
forth from the present to
the future, not unlike the finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation
seven years ago. The
action-oriented episode will include a space battle and the return of
the dreaded Borg queen
played by Alice Krige, the actress who originated the role in the Star
Trek feature film First
Contact. It will feature familiar faces in unfamiliar roles (Captain
Harry Kim?) while introducing
new characters, including the grown child of Tom and B'Elanna. And
finally, Dwight Schultz is
set to return as fan favourite Lt. Barclay.
"There are a lot of different directions [the finale] could go," says
Jeri Ryan, who plays the
curvaceous Seven of Nine. "There are really interesting ways these
story lines could tie up."
Meanwhile, there is a rumour that one of the crew will be killed
during the episode. But, of
course, the show's producer won't confirm or deny that report.
"I've heard that too, but it's totally unsubstantiated," Robert Duncan
McNeill (Lt. Paris) said
before adding cryptically: "But, it's more than possible that one or
more people could not make
it home." Hmm.
While McNeill says that he's excited by the prospect of stowing his
uniform and taking on other
projects, he admits it will also be very tough to let go. "Our show is
better each year.
Sometimes that comfort level can breed complacency, not that we've
reached that, but you
want to leave while still on your best game."
For his part, Garrett Wang (Ensign Kim) says he's anxious for
something different. Wang points
out that if the average life span of a person is 70 years, then
one-tenth of his life will have been
spent wearing a Starfleet uniform. "Everybody is ready for that next
challenge," he says.
Robert Picardo (The Doctor) agrees. "I've never played the same role
for such a long time...as
an actor you enjoy leading a bunch of different lives," he says. "As
much as I've enjoyed playing
The Doctor, I'm tired of walking around ramrod straight. I long to
slouch."
Tim Russ, who plays the equally erect Vulcan Tuvok, looks forward to
moving on, but plans to
stay in touch with his Star Trek family. "There are great memories,"
he says. "Some relate to the
show directly, but more are from behind the scenes.:
Thankfully, for dyed-in-the-wool Trek fans as well as Voyager's cast,
the end of Star Trek:
Voyager won't mark the end of the Trek franchise. McNeill and Russ,
who have both directed
Voyager episodes, have expressed interest in getting involved with the
next Trek series,
currently in development. "I'll certainly be putting in my bid to
direct episodes of the new series,"
Russ confirms. "If there are any guest spots for me, I'd be more than
happy."
In fact, he may get his chance. At press time, pre-production was
already well under way for
Star Trek: V (a working title) which is rumoured to chronicle the
origins of Starfleet years
before Kirk and company left port. Depending on whether the actors and
writers strike this
spring, Paramount is said to be gearing the new series for the
upcoming season. Should it
premiere this fall, Star Trek: V – and it's near-guaranteed seven year
run – would mean that
Star Trek, in one form or another, will have been a TV staple for a
mind boggling 20
consecutive years.
Then, there's the big screen. Patrick Stewart has already signed on
for another movie based on
The Next Generation cast and while producers say they do not plan to
bring Star Trek:
Voyager to a theatre near you, there's a chance Voyager players may
appear in the upcoming
movie.
Alas, fans (and hopeful Voyager cast mates) will have to wait until at
least until 2002 for a big
screen return. In the interim, many of the actors are looking forward
to a well-deserved rest
before resuming their careers sans pips. Mulgrew is currently filming
a movie in England, after
which she says she will take a break to spend time with her family.
Picardo wants to return to
the stage, McNeill will continue directing and Wang is planning to
concentrate his efforts on the
advancement of Asian cinema.
Star Trek is long in lore about cast and crew making off with mementos
after their tours are
done. For example, Leonard Nimoy, the original series' Spock,
retained his Vulcan ears after
that show finished. Will Russ follow suit? "You're damn right," he
says. Ethan Phillips,
meanwhile, has joked that he only wants to bring home "Seven of Nine"
to remember the show.
Picardo hints that it may not be so easy for the cast to take home
souvenirs. "I think that the
moment they call 'cut' [during the final episode] they're going to
come and tear our clothes right
off and sell them," he says. "I'll be lucky to keep my own
sideburns."
Any bidders?

Sci-Fi Wire is reporting that Kate's next project will be a one-woman
stage show entitled Tea at Five, which stars Mulgrew as Katharine
Hepburn and tracks the acting legend's career from the ages of 33 to
76. Mulgrew said that the show will open in Hartford, Conn., in
February 2002, to be followed, hopefully, by a run in New York.

Hartford Courant newspaper http://www.ctnow.com
New Show About Hepburn At Hartford Stage
By FRANK RIZZO
Courant Staff Writer
June 21, 2001
In a way, it was inevitable.
After all, Hartford's Katharine Hepburn has been a prominent
figure in the American entertainment landscape for most of the 20th
century. When you combine her stage, film and television career with
her unique and independent personal style, you can understand why so
many people have been enamored of the woman, who at 94 still lives in
her Fenwick family homestead in Old Saybrook.
Now Matthew Lombardo, who grew up in Wethersfield, has written a
one-person show about Hepburn at two significant stages of the
actress's life. "Tea at Five" will be presented Feb. 7 to March 10 as
part of Hartford Stage's main-stage season. Kate Mulgrew, known for
her role as Captain Janeway in TV's "Star Trek: Voyager," will play
Hepburn at two significant stages of her life: when she returned to
Connecticut after being banished by studio heads for being "box office
poison" in 1938; when she was 76 in 1983 after her automobile
accident. No director has yet been named for the new work.
The first act ends with her receiving the script to the play
"The Philadelphia Story," which was to revive her career.
Coincidentally, the Philip Barry play will open the main-stage
season at Hartford Stage Oct. 4 to Nov. 4. David Warren, who staged the
currently playing "Baptiste," will direct "The Philadelphia Story."
Neither Hepburn nor her family has been approached regarding the work
and production, so it is unknown what her reaction will be to the
dramatizing of her life. Lombardo portrays it as a tribute to the
actress but adds he will honestly touch on all aspects of her life.
Michael Wilson, artistic director of Hartford Stage, says there are
efforts to encourage other local institutions to have their own
celebrations of Hepburn's life.
