Augh! I can envision it now. They'll keep pushing back the date the video
will be released. Then when it finally reaches the stores, only ten obscure
outlets in North America will carry it. Tim fanatics will steal the few
available copies. I will never get to see this film. I can't stand it.

Thank you for posting the article Mia. =o) Dont think I've read that one

So true about remembering the bad guys... most my favororite actors and
characters are those
who excel at playing the villian.

After years of observing directors at work on-set, Roth is now trying
directing
for himself. He's currently overseeing The War Zone, for Channel 4, an
adaptation of Alexander
> Stuart's novel about a teenage boy who discovers incest in his family.

I'll say, the hard copy cover if the book that I have has a picture of a
naked woman on the front.
I havent even glanced into the book yet. Nor have I taken it out of the
tissue wrapping it came in.

In reading his interviews and articles, he really has some strong opinions
and beliefs, they are
real interesting to read, and I find myself agreeing and thinking quite
deeply about them at times.

I've started planning out a script over the past few weeks. The whole idea
of "studio films" destroying something, and ripping anyones work apart
really gets to me. A lot of what he says about that issue really sticks in
my head... I know I'm dreaming, but if I ever option my script in the
future, I'll be trying to go for indie studios to purchase it.

Don't blame you for being mad, Tanna. But it's good
to know that as a rental they are expecting it to do well.
The U.K. is doing a big promotional thing for it next
month. My friend sent me a clipping from a notable video
magazine and they rated it very high in terms of rentability.
Have a great holiday, btw! : ) I've already had mine.

I have a good feeling that we're going to see a lot more
of Tim over the next few months. Now that WZ has wrapped
he's going to be all over the place promoting it. Judging by
Tim's comments in "The Idler" it sounds like he is quite
pleased with the results. I found the interview to be quite
technically informative.

This article is from the Independent:

THE FRUITS OF ROTH:

Tim Roth garnered an Academy Award nomination for his flamboyant performance as
a
murderous fop in Rob Roy, and could have used it to secure roles in big-budget
Hollywood
popcorn movies. But unlike his old friend and fellow "Britpacker", Gary
Oldman,who these
days pops up mostly in hokum like Air Force One and The Fifth Element, Roth
still prefers to
appear in less lucrative, but artistically more rewarding, small- scale
features, such as his latest
film, Liar. And it's not because the opportunity to enter the world of
blockbusters didn't present
itself after his close encounter with Oscar.

"I got offered all those kinds of movies," he confirms. "But I'd just get past
the first few pages
and then I'd start to doze off. They can be really good parts, and I like to
watch them on
airplanes, but I'd much rather get a script like Liar, because,in the end, if
you do a whole series
of those films, then that's what you've become. You may be rich, but I'd rather
be an actor all
of my life than somebody who knows a lot about cigars."

Written and directed by Jonas and Joshua Pate, identical twin brothers making
their feature
debut, Liar is a pitch-black thriller which showcases the London-born thespian
at his most
cruel. It is small, like most of Roth's films, but it's big on
style,intelligence, atmosphere and
acting. And, while Roth has essayed a string of dark and dangerous characters
already in his
career ("They're fun to play and usually they stick in people's minds; I'd
rather play Iago than
Hamlet or Romeo"), none of them has been as memorably psychologically sadistic
as the
epileptic Princeton alumnus who, in a tense psychological game of
cat-and-mouse, constantly
turns the tables on the two cops (Michael Rooker, Chris Penn) interrogating him
over a murder.
Did he doit, or didn't he? That's the question.

Roth was still filming Giuseppe "Cinema Paradiso" Tornatore's latest film in
Rome when he
received the script for Liar. Usually he makes a point of not reading anything
new while he's
working but, in this case, he made an exception because the Pates needed an
answer quickly.
He was glad that he did.

"People know that I will make films that are low-budget and so they send me
these scripts with
a little letter saying, `It's kind of a Reservoir Dogs/Pulp Fiction thing',"
says Roth sarcastically.
"I don' t even read those. They go straight in the bin. I try and read
everything else, but most of
it is usually shit. But then you get the occasional one that's great.

"When I read Liar, I thought it was extraordinary," he enthuses. " It's a very
dense, very wordy,
cleverly crafted piece of writing, that's not at all like the sort of thing
that normally comes out of
America. And the character intrigued me. The whole idea of putting yourself in
an bizarre,
dangerous situation, and the game of trying to get out of it, was fascinating."

Having decided to accept a role, Roth says that the next thing he does is check
out the
director. As he's worked with the likes of Alan Clark (Made in Britain), Mike
Leigh
(Meantime), Woody Allen (Everyone Says I Love You), Peter Greenaway (The
Cook,The
Thief, His Wife and Her Lover), and Quentin Tarantino in his time, he knows a
thing or two
about directors, and says that experience isn't everything. "The fact that
someone's done 60
films doesn't make them a good director. They have to convince me that they
know what they're
doing. Or, at least, if they don't, that they'll have a good go."

After years of observing directors at work on-set, Roth is now trying directing
for himself. He's
currently overseeing The War Zone, for Channel 4, an adaptation of Alexander
Stuart's novel
about a teenage boy who discovers incest in his family. Roth, a father of
three, says that "I've
always liked films like The 400 Blows and My Life as a Dog - great films about
children - and
it's always been a passion of mine to make a film like this." While loath to
discuss at length its
controversial issues, he has said that he thinks Channel 4 is " very brave" for
taking it on,
because the subject matter is "very graphic and very horrendous".

As well as enabling him to make a film about something which he feels so
passionate about, The
War Zone has also given Roth a rare opportunity to work in England, having
moved to Los
Angeles in 1991 after the work virtually, and inexplicably, dried upfor him
here. He's glad to be
back. But will he be staying?

"I like to be where the films are. And although there are more films being made
here, I didn't get
any of the scripts. So I go wherever scripts are, and, right now, that's in
America. Or that's
where I get them, from America, and that takes me to other parts of the world.
I'd like to live
here, but it's too expensive. Seriously, it's a joke to live here."

===========================

Here's a little tidbit from one of their columns:

ANYBODY who has seen Tim Roth acting in Reservoir Dogs or his

latest film, Liar, has to respect the man's intensity. But if
you have the kind
of energy Roth has, it's evidently not all that easy to
switch it off.

Last night in the Groucho, Roth was having a beer with
friends. One
celebrity- watcher noticed not only was the Hollywood star
chewing gum
but he was smoking at the same time.

How terrible! :-( Interesting stuff.

Re: the 25 greatest actors of the '90's in EW. Well,
at least they recognized Tim's leading man potential.
But still, I am flabbergasted when I think that anyone
would list Tim as a "future threat" AFTER
Alec Baldwin who's acting resume is pretty
lame. It's just so ludicrous! Sheesh......

Thought I'd do a little online searching....
Just some things I found.

British author ALEXANDER STUART has written seven
                                         books, including his controversial
incest novel, The War
Zone, which actor Tim Roth has
chosen to film as his
                                         directorial debut in 1998. Among
Stuart's other books are an
account of the life and death of
his five-year-old son from
cancer, and Life On Mars, an
account of Stuart's seven
                                         years in Florida. Stuart was
executive producer of Nicolas
                                         Roeg's movie, Insignifiance, and
teaches screenwriting at
                                         the University of Miami.

Roth Jumps to Director's Chair -
Oscar-nominated actor
Tim Roth is taking a turn in the
director's chair. Roth has
signed a deal to make his feature
directing debut on "The
War Zone," an adaptation of an
Alexander Stuart novel.
The story centers on a 15-year-old boy
in a seemingly
                                     normal middle-class family that has
moved from London
to the isolated Devon countryside. The
film will star Ray
Winstone, who played the lead in fellow
British
                                     actor-turned-director Gary Oldman's
"Nil by Mouth."

Hope they'll be more news soon...
One of these days I'll read the War Zone book I have.

Interesting choice of seating for Tim's viewing.. so what has been his

the film been, after seeing it on screen and finished.. You know really
didnt take
that long to make it. Must have been a smooth operation for him. That's
nice.

The August 7th Entertainment Weekly put out a list of The 25 Greatest Actors
of the 90's. Tim didn't make the top 25 ( What do these guys know anyway :-P
), but he is mentioned in the Who's Next section. I'll type in what it says
for those of you who might be interested. (He didn't rate a picture. They must
be mad.)

>>WHO'S NEXT
Don't Look Over Your Shoulders, Fellas--These Players May Be Gaining On You.

ARTISTICALLY SPEAKING, these guys have their whole live ahead of them. Some
are young, some less so, but all of them brim with leading-man potential.

TIM ROTH, 37 The endearing, yet vaguely menacing Roth can shock with his
ability to move from down-and-dirty roles (Reservoir Dogs) to ripe costume
villainy (Rob Roy). <<

Who's Next also included Leonardo Dicaprio and Brendan (George of the Jungle)
Fraser! To the magazine's credit, they deliberately did not include any movie
stars, (Brad Pitt, Mel Gibson etc.) on any of the lists. I personally would
have put Tim on the top 25 list rather than Alec Baldwin and Kevin Bacon, but
I guess I'm more than a little prejudiced.

Hi everyone!

<<This is true, but I looked at the new pictures on Mia's page today and they're
great! Especially the color one where Tim has just a trace of a smile on his
face. Yes!>>

I know what you mean Carrie--I had this HUGE smile
on my face when I opened the package and found those lovely pix
inside! Glad they came out good on the computer.
I'm going to add addresses on my site
where people can obtain originals. I've added the video cover
pic from Deceiver (from Blockbuster). It's got an adorable
photo of Tim as James Wayland on it. I'll be adding more
stuff this weekend (after I help my son move out of residence.
God help me, he's staying with me for two weeks until he
moves into his new apt!! ;-) Well, on the bright side,
we won't be arguing over movies--he loves Tim's work
as much as I do!)

One of things I'm adding is pix of Tim from Karlovy.
(I hope the video captures come out ok). Also, I've
done some research on Tim's stage career which
I'll include. Oh, one more thing: There is a U.K.
magazine, kind of an insert type thing (I think) that
is free at video stores, called "Screens." They will
be doing a big promotion on Liar (according to a
U.K. article I have) in Sept. I may be able to get
extras if anyone can't get them.

<<I wonder if War Zone will be distributed before The Pianist at this rate. I
just read a book based in Venice and would love to visit there (especially
during the festival) but alas, I have no money to do so.>>

Oh yes, I'd love to visit there too. So romantic. Raffaella
and Maria--you guys are soooo lucky! : )

I hope that the delay with the Pianist film doesn't mean
there are problems with it. I can't help but worry. :-(

That's it for now.

Mia

I am going to contact BRAVO also because they were the
ones who telecast the coverage at Cannes. As for Rai1, it's part
of the multicultural station called TLN which is offered through our
cable company. I'll phone TLN today for you and ask if it's
telecast in Vancouver.

My, this has been a week for disappointing news: first that
idiot Gallo badmouthing Tim, then "Legend of the Pianist..."
won't be shown at Venice, and now I just found out that we
all could have listened to Tim's radio interview "live" on the
internet had we have known earlier about it!! But--there's still
hope. I may be able to get a transcript or tape. Will keep
you all posted.

It is a big disappointment that the Pianist film won't be
shown at Venice. :-( I hoped that Tim might nab an
award there. <sob> But I guess looking on the bright
side, Tornatore must be a perfectionist, and wants it
just right before he premieres it. Now I'm going to
worry that it won't be ready for December though. :-(

I *am* pleased to hear that Tim will at least be at the

ROTFL!! My son said a similar thing. He remarked

God, I hope not. There something so pretentious about bodyguards to me. I'd
much rather they starred in a movie together where Tim would get to remove one
of Gallo's body parts. (First choice--Gallo's mouth; Second choice--no Tim
already did that in "The Cook, etc.") :-p

Hi guys!

I've added two new pix to the "miscellaneous pictures" section
on my site. They are from a Japanese magazine and I've never
seen these ones before. I couldn't resist leaving them larger
(which means they may take a while to download) cos' they are
sooooo gorgeous. If you feel like checking them out, the
URL is: <http://webhome.idirect.com/~td1900/magazine.htm

I also just found out that Tim did a radio interview in the
U.K. Aauughhh.....figures, after the fact I hear about it. Will
try to find out more details.

Hey Tanna!

Yes, that "coollist" server seems to have a bad reputation.
This one has several options available and seems much
more organized. It was recommended to me by
some others who used it so it should be ok.

I should mention that when I first set up the list I forgot
to switch the "reply-to" so it would go to the list when
people responded. So if you posted a message yesterday
and didn't see it show up here, that's why. Sorry. I fixed
it now though so everything should be fine.

Also, you can read your messages at the "makelist" site
just in case you ever feel that you missed some. This is
another option I like and it's available to members only.
