I was fortunate enough to catch a pre-screening of "Match Point" a
couple of days ago, and I must say that the film blew me away. This is
a true return to brilliance for Allen, and strikingly poignant movie
regardless of if you are a fan of the director or not. While I don't
want to give much away, I must say that the key questions that the film
raises are those of love vs. lust and, perhaps more importantly, luck
vs. hard work. While the instability of the relationships in the film
leaves the former question more up in the air, the latter is perhaps
more easily debatable in the context of Rys Meyers' character. What do
you guys think? Is lust or love more realistic? And is it better to be
lucky or good?

Hi there,

I am SAM, an Iraqi refugee living in Lebanon at the moment; I have spent the
last 10 years of my life as a refugee registered with the UNHCR in Beirut. The
last 4 years, I have spent as an activist for peace and human rights (especially
refugees and asylum seekers) on the Internet; I'm also books author and ebooks
publisher. I have launched many campaigns to improve our situation as refugees
in Lebanon and hopefully bring more understanding to our problems worldwide. I
helped make many changes and improvements at the UNHCR office in Beirut; I used
the Internet as the field for my activities (you can read more about that in my
free ebook 'MY CAMPAIGNS'). All my ebooks are free and could be download from my
sites.

This is my newest campaign, it's about the illegal and humiliating actions of
the UNHCR, who using photos of refugees as banners and human-buttons to collect
money. This is an abuse of the dignity and humanity of the refugees and must
stop immediately and a clear public apology present by The United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees. My friends, I am talking about the pictures you can
see here:

Where you can read the rest of this message as web page.

For more info about UNHCR and life of refugees you can read my free ebooks. I
invite you as fellow humans and members of the world community to support my
campaign by reading my article on my site and see the human-buttons. The
campaign is to support and improve the UNHCR http://www.unhcr.ch especially
after the last scandals in the UN and UNHCR, just for example:

The refugees allege that UNHCR staff is selling most of the food items they are
supposed to be supplied.
"They aren't supplying sufficient food to us because they sell most of the food
items," they allege: http://allafrica.com/stories/200503140214.html

I can see "Deconstructing Harry" as a spinoff from Bergman's "Wild
Strawberries" and "Celebrity" as a spinoff from Fellini's "La Dolce
Vita" . . . it is not going to be that unusual for people to do
things that reflect things they have been exposed to . . .
jazzplayers used to often have quotes of other songs in their
solos . . . a lot of Shakespeare takes its plots from earlier
sources . . . there are also only so many plot variations you can
have, only so many ways you can shoot two people talking to each
other . . . I suppose the big thing is how you handle it all . . .
there are some things that distract me, though, like there is a
gunfight in a train station in De Palma's "The Untouchables" and
there is a baby-carriage going down the steps, it is almost certainly
lifted from Eisenstein's famous Odessa Steps sequence in "The
Battleship Potemkin", the babycarriage itself has appeared in Woody
Allen's "Bananas" and I believe one of the Naked Gun or Police
Academy movies, I think when you are trying to be serious, it
distract from a mood . . .

Of course Woody idolizes Bergman and took a couple of shots at
imitating his style. Nothing wrong with that and he did a good job of
it. Even two of his comedy/dramas were named after Bergman films
(Crimes and Misdemeanors, Husbands and Wives).

Can someone please e-mail me the exact quote from "Sleeper" about the

Well, I never posted much before, but hello! I enjoy Woody Allen's
comedy and movies quite a bit. Actually, I enjoy many of the
comedians from the 1960s. It's very difficult to write the sort of
cerebral humor that people like Woody Allen, Mort Sahl, Elaine May
and Mike Nichols, and so many others used to excell in. Perhaps
that's why so much modern comedy rarely hits the heights of someone
like Woody.

Welcome to the group. As you go along, his early
movies tend to be the most slapstick, the middle ones
have quite a bit of experimentation but can also be
funny, and his late ones can get sharp as a tack!

Hope you enjoy his work over the decades. It is truly
an achievement!

Thanks. I hope you won't be offended by what I say next, but
sometimes people zip in here with things, and then disappear. I
scanned the file using a major commercially marketed virus program,
and it seems fine, thought I would mention this in case anyone else
is interested. The recording is about a minute and a half and rather
interesting and I suppose a very good point. Certainly there is a lot
to be said for presence, for likeability, identification on some
level, and just being funny. Jack Benny could make people laugh
saying "Well", but I noticed that when Larry Hagman would say the
same word on "Dallas", people did not laugh . . .

There is a very old joke about this guy being invited by a friend to
a joketellers convention. Everybody at the convention that had been
there before new all the jokes, you didn't really need to retell the
joke, you could just say the number. One guy gets up and says "272"
and everybody is just rolling in the aisles. A woman gets up and
says "932" and everybody is just laughing so hard tears are coming
out of their eyes. Then a guy gets up and says "815" and the room is
silent and people are just kind of looking around. The new guy says
to his friend, "How come everybody laughed when the guy said '272'
and when the woman said '932', but not when the third guy
said '815' . . ." and his friend says, "Well, but he didn't tell it
very well . . ."

I did notice Woody Allen said "floor" with two syllables. I have
noticed that some New Yorkers also say "beer" with two syllables.
People are interesting.

I saw part of that on t.v. I was very distracted at the time you
posted and have been since around that time. I myself liked what I
saw. I don't know if it is commercially available, I think where I
saw it was on Turner Classic Movies or something.

Some of your favorites are some of my favorites.

This club is quiet, very quiet sometimes [there hasn't been much
comment on the newest Woody Allen film, I missed it myself]. I
myself, I don't get to get to the movies much, I often used to see
somewhere between three to five movies a week if there wasnt a
festival, and if there was a festival, it would jack up a bit, but
during the past few years there have been things that have limited my
being able to see movies, responsibilities and so on. I saw a movie
with Isabelle Huppert, something like "La vie promise" at a festival
recently and most of a longer version directors's cut of "Cinema
Paradiso" at an old restored cinema palace, but things with my
children have been pre-occupying, there have been some problems. I
am now [I mean nowadays, when I can] visiting with them in the NYC
area, they are more than 1200 miles away. It is hard. We do things
like go around Brooklyn and Manhattan, go to the zoos and we visited
the Coney Island boardwalk recently, I am sure some of these things
have been in Woody Allen films. It is expensive for me to go up
there to see my kids, and so I try to scrimp on my money. I was
astonished when I first saw an ultrasound of my daughter and later my
son, this is something that is so much more than a movie, at least to
me, mindblowing, and there are just things like watching my son look
at the Central Park Zoo penguins, it is better than a movie to me.
And after seeing people run towards the camera away from all that
collapsing dust and debris and so on on September 11, I don't know
what a James Bond film means any more, or whether it matters that
much to me to see Tom Cruise run towards me away from a fireball.

We may go to Playland sometime when it is warmer, these sort of
places are often closed when it is cold, Playland has been in a lot
of movies, including "Sweet and Lowdown", I think it is in "Fatal
Attraction", "Big", "Muppets Take Manhattan" and some other movies,
people who are from New York probably know this stuff better.

I watched William Holden and Kim Novak in "Picnic" again recently on
a video I have, a film from the 1950s that I thought I would hate.
Some of the acting is a bit stagy, and there are some fights where,
in old movies, they didn't always do real realistic punches, and
there is a subplot that slows it down a little bit for me, but this
is a movie that seems to always affect me and I find myself feeling
things just over things like Hal saying "Hi" to Madge and Madge
says "Hi" back, there is a moment where she shuts a car door, and I
feel stuff . . . there are other things, but I wouldn't want to give
it away.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the commercials Allen directed for a
restuarant called The Coop? These are mentioned in Brian Hamill's "Woody Allen
At
Work."
