Re: interiors and woody allen dramas...

I can see "Deconstructing Harry" as a spinoff from Bergman's "Wild
Strawberries" and "Celebrity" as a spinoff from Fellini's "La Dolce
Vita" . . . it is not going to be that unusual for people to do
things that reflect things they have been exposed to . . .
jazzplayers used to often have quotes of other songs in their
solos . . . a lot of Shakespeare takes its plots from earlier
sources . . . there are also only so many plot variations you can
have, only so many ways you can shoot two people talking to each
other . . . I suppose the big thing is how you handle it all . . .
there are some things that distract me, though, like there is a
gunfight in a train station in De Palma's "The Untouchables" and
there is a baby-carriage going down the steps, it is almost certainly
lifted from Eisenstein's famous Odessa Steps sequence in "The
Battleship Potemkin", the babycarriage itself has appeared in Woody
Allen's "Bananas" and I believe one of the Naked Gun or Police
Academy movies, I think when you are trying to be serious, it
distract from a mood . . .

Of course Woody idolizes Bergman and took a couple of shots at imitating his style. Nothing wrong with that and he did a good job of it. Even two of his...
