I haven't been active in this group for years. And I just last week learned the
sad and heartbreaking news about Kim Chan's passing. To say I was stunned and
saddened is an understatement. My heart goes out to Sepiatint, his and her
family and friends, and everyone.
I say this with complete sincerity, that Kim Chan was a talented and charismatic
man with a unique personality and I believe his spirit will live forever.
I was lucky enough to meet him in 1997 and 1998 at the Fu Fests in Toronto. In
1997, I had the great honor of having lunch at his table and he was incredibly
gracious and kind to everyone there, and told us all the most wonderful stories
and asked us about ourselves, too. During that weekend I had the chance to speak
with him several times and he was warm, funny, kind and respectful to me and all
of us. EVERYONE at the Fu Fest loved him. I will always remember him with the
greatest respect and affection.
The first time I truly became aware of Kim and his wondeful talent was when I
watched an episode of Kung Fu: The Legend Continues called The Ancient Lottery.
In fact it was the first Episode of that series I was able to watch, because I
gave birth to my first son that year. I was absolutely transfixed and delighted
by Kim's performance, and to this day it remains my favorite episode.
Kim has a new generation of fans. My teenage sons love the show Kung Fu: The
Legend Continues, and guess who is their favorite character? The Ancient! And
also when we watched the episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent he guest
starred in Chinoiserie. They loved his performance. (They are ages 16 and 13.)
I have so many wonderful memories of Kim Chan and I know how much he was and is
loved, and will continue to be loved, admired and respected. His wonderful work
- a gift to all of us - will be enjoyed for generations to come.
With love and sincere sympathies,
Liz
