Hi, I'm Todd Tinkham, an independent filmmaker here in NC.
My films have screened at hundreds of festivals including SLAMDANCE, Palm Springs International, Rhode Island International, and festivals in Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. Upcoming festivals include the Ava Gardner Film Festival, the Carrboro Film Festival and the Mumbai International Children's Film Festival in India, http://www.micff.com/index.htm
I have worked on dozens of independent films for/with other NC filmmakers. I have learned a lot on those shoots and have developed some great friendships as well.
Currently, I'm in production on SOUTHLAND OF THE HEART, an action-packed, feature-length drama about life, loss, and the many lessons love has to offer.
I am also in production on a short, murder-mystery film written and directed by an amazing group of teenagers with autism whom I volunteer with on Fridays here in Chapel Hill.
Along with Nic Beery and Ajit Prem, I received an Independent Arts Award from the Independent Weekly earlier this year.
I look forward to getting more involved with tfsig once my feature film is completed.
Cheers!
Todd

My short films Hard Stapled and The Collection have been screened at several film festivals in the past year or so. Hard Stapled won Best Comedy Short at the 2008 All-American Film Festival in Durham.
I've helped shoot and edit videos for the YouTube channel of my girlfriend, actress Alena Koch(www.youtube.com/alenakoch,) and we're in the process of developing original content for our new parody/spoof site, www.CinemaParody.com.
I also have a supporting role in Todd Tinkham's feature film, Southland of the Heart.
I'm currently in preproduction for a short horror film which I hope to find people willing to help me film it soon. :)
I also have other film ideas waiting in the wings including wanting to direct a full-length B Movie Musical at some point.
I'm glad to be a part of such a creative group of people. I can't wait to meet everyone in person at some point. :)

Just wanted to share that webisode 3 of 5 is up for my new comedy web series
"The Expert". Each webisode is under 5 minutes. You can watch by going to
www.awakenpictures.com and if you like it pass it on.
This is a major experiment for me, in Internet distribution. It's been a wild
ride but I've learned quite a bit.
Here's some promotion we got through the Eastern North Carolina film commission:

I am replying through the group email so I hope it will work.
I'll try not to give a resume, just hilights. : )
My name is Phoenix Mangus and I have been an avid comedic and horror independent filmmaker since High School. I went to PCC, during the first years it was open as a Technical Film School, and then began to immediately work in the industry around NC as a grip and sound/boom man, with "The Studio," "Treehouse Productions" and others. I have been a professional photographer since 18 so I moved to Orlando in 1999 and spent years as a dolphin photographer and a digital portrait photographer, learning all the tricks of Photoshop.
I returned to Central NC and restarted my sketch comedy and stand-up routine at the The Cave in CH, I then began working through the The Peoples Channel as a freelancer, director, and teacher. There I taught Field and Studio Production and was head teacher for the first three years of their Video Summer Camp. I also was cameraman and/or director of their government shows and music episodes.
At the Peoples Channel I produced and created lots of media, most importantly 7 episodes of a sketch-comedy show "After 9, It Gets a Little Blue" as well as 7 short films. One of which, "27seconds," won the Peoples Choice award in 2007.
That year we started working on our first feature length film, a horror-comedy about redneck zombies who take over a small town, not unlike Mebane. If you had been watching TV and reading the papers at that time you may have heard about it, our movie got a lot of attention. It is called Southern Undead, and it'll be finished (finally) in the next couple of months. The disease is spread through contaminated containers of "Skull" tobacco, leading to our tagline, "It's the Snuff that SCREAMS are made of." Haw-haw-haw.
We just did the Greensboro 48 Hour Film Fest this past June for the 1st time, and although we didn't win a prize, we were picked as the Best of 2009 and was shown with 15 other films, out of over 50 that were submitted.
Currently I am working on another 2 short films, and we are beginning pre-production on another sketch comedy series. Plus I am collaborating with writer Felton Foushee on another full length film, this an all out, scary as hell, horror film. A horror film with lots of depth, tho.
I have a few production companies you may hear of, Southern Undead is under "Hey Y'all Productions," my fiancee and I work under "Dragon and Phoenix Productions" and my personal films that I write and direct are called a "Brillig Bandersnatch Egg."
I am currently finishing my BA at UNCG in English and Psychology and I will be moving into a MFA in film production and Media Literacy. I consider myself a film scholar and I write articles on the symbology behind films and the inherent manipulative nature of the industry in general.
I believe a lot of current independents have got it wrong (present company excluded) and are moving their subtext into the context and creating overly personal films that do not stand repeated viewings or the test of time. My first rule is film should be entertaining, it is then my job as artist to put in the subtext where it belongs -- under the layers of the film image and plot.
I love pre and production, I languish in post, but have a great editor now that does my work.
I am trying to build a community of filmmakers that will show each others work off and help to support each other. There is too much exclusivity in a lot of the filmmaker's around here.
I love meeting filmmakers for coffee, lunch, conversation. I love working on other's sets and helping in any way I can. I am a talented character actor if you need one. I have a gift at plotting the story, shooting for editing and directing actors. I love symbology and stuff my films with Hermetic and Esoteric images.
We are always looking for more artists and creative types to join our group, we always need Grips, but we could use a Set Designer, Carpenter and anyone who is a wiz at Maya. Our films are all narrative and fantasical in nature, but we are unable to move to the next level (werewolf film!) until I get a CG artist on our crew.
Would love to speak with you all individually at anytime -- just contact me! We all need to help and support each other.
Lastly, I am taking submissions for a Narrative Film Fest which will play at the Tate St coffee house in G-boro before Thanksgiving or right afterwards. Email your info if you are interested, these films do have to be narrative tho, no documentaries.
Thanks for reading my opus, hope to speak with you in the future!

I've never purchased a DVD download, but I have burned CD-Rs and DVD-Rs
from an image file. There is an ISO standard image file format widely
supported by DVD and CD writing software, and there are other formats as
well. Odds are whatever software you use to burn DVDs is able to create
disk images and burn DVDs from them.
If you're on a Mac, the disk utility is supposed to be able to both
create an ISO image (as a "CD/DVD Master") and burn one, though I
haven't actually done this myself. (I've directly burned DVDs on Macs,
just not created or burned ISO images.) One bit of nonsense: Apple
apparently insists on giving the ISO image file the extension .cdr, but
all you need to do is rename it .iso.
Before you get too excited about uploading and downloading disk images,
though, you ought to look into (often hidden) restrictions on bandwidth
imposed by your Internet service provider and by whoever provides
hosting services for your website. If they advertise "unlimited"
bandwidth that typically means it's not unlimited, they just don't tell
you what the limit is. Uploading a single DVD image could put you over
the secret limit.

You're not the only person with slow upload time to YouTube (Google for
something like "Youtube upload time" and you'll see a lot of messages.)
3-4 hours for a 3-minute video seems ridiculous, however. How big is the
file? Here's what YouTube has to say, for what it's worth:

Has anyone on here ever purchased a DVD download off of Amazon or some other source? Does it take a long time to download? I'd hate to sell a download for something if it takes my customer a long time to get it to their computer.
I've tried uploading 3 minutes or so of my webisodes to Youtube, for example and it's taken 3-4 hours to get the best quality possible.
Blessings, Tom

On the mac, there's some simple commands for copying a DVD to a file; you are basically creating a disc image file.
Of course a DVD has more than one file on it, but a disc image is just that - if copied onto a disc, that disc becomes a complete image of the original disc. It's an operating system level operation, not a dvd or editor thing.
DVD studio pro also let's you create the copy as a file as well.

If I put together my DVD on the editor and then burn it to a DVD-R disc through the editing pprogram -- then you can play it on a DVD player.
So what would I need to do to get the file you're talking about that is on the disc and put it back on my hard drive and then upload it for sale?

I'm not able to say what Amazon is doing but if you make a file that is a DVD image file, one could download that file and burn it to a DVD....
Is that your goal?

Perhaps it's not as confusing as it seems.

One additional question:
It seems that selling downloads that .mov is probably the best file format for
that...
But what program do I need to be able to convert my DVD to an actual DVD
download directly on my site the way they do it on Amazon.com?
While going through a third party is excellent for many things especially with
distribution, it seems that we can lose a lot of money by going through
Amazon.com at times when they want a large cut of the profit if we can do it
ourselves.
Definitely, Inquiring minds would like to know. Every penny saved for my
projects is an additional penny that assists my company and helps keep it
afloat.

Tom
