Just got a call from an actor. Told them that was the first I heard. So I am trying to research today while at the Bass Fishing show for the Movie Go fish.

Cheryl, you simply go the tfsignc yahoo group site, (you have to be
logged in to yahoo to be recognized as a member) click on LINKS on the

that says "Add Link." Click on that and fill in the info. You should
be all set.

I believe you just need to set up an email address and password, and then Josh, as moderator, will let you in.
Hopefully we can talk about this at the next meeting. Jim has joined, but so far, it’s only Josh, Jim and I.
I think it has a lot of “social network” possibilities that are worth exploring, particularly when it comes to photos and media.
Jim:
Is there any way to connect to the Internet with a laptop at SOCA? I can show this and the Laffing Moose Sketch Comedy Ning group I set up at the next meeting, or possibly in February.

Dear TFSIG folks,
I want to remind you that we will resume meeting in January with a
meeting on January 24th. (The calendar on the Yahoo TFSIGNC site has
future meetings as well)
This meeting begins a shift towards more "programs" and less
"organizational" stuff although we have plenty of interesting
organizational issues plus meet & greet to do.
The LOCATION for this meeting is still up in the air. It will either
be our "regular" location in Durham OR the School of Communication
Arts auditorium, north of Raleigh. I wanted to get the meeting
firmly on everyone's calendar, regardless. Look for another news
email with the final location. We will convene as usual at 7:30PM.
January meeting plan:
1) we will show a short (under 20 min) film by a member who will be
present to chat about it.
2) I have an interesting "community building + PR" item to discuss
with the group but I'm not ready to broadcast the exact possibility
thru an email. Your opinions, abilities and interest in film
community may get a great chance to exercise themselves. (Note: this
is not a group hug exercise, but an opportunity to take on a project)
3) we will discuss future programs. In addition to continuing to
show films by members with some discussion, we are talking about an
HD camera comparison workshop, we are open to screening any work in
progress seeking feedback at any time, and we have the idea of a
session about legal issues for filmmakers in the pipeline.
Be there!!
cheers,
Jim McQuaid

The TFSIGNC yahoo group now has a Members contact info database. Best thing
about this is
that it is PRIVATE. Only members of the group can view this. Chris Smith-Naill
set this up
(enterprising! nice work!) and I added my info.
This solves the problem some folks have of having a Yahoo ID that is more or
less
anonymous and not wanting to put any personal info, not even name in some cases,
into the
Yahoo public domain. So, you can use your anonymous Yahoo email and domain to
get
messages like this, but by putting your basic contact info into the members
database, other
members - but not the surfing public - can decode whose email that is, how to
give you a
call, etc.
I'd encourage folks to populate this with whatever contact info you want to
share, at least real
name and email and hopefully a cell number.

Members have the ability to add Links to the Links page of the TFSIG

my film web sites.
Please use something similar to my example, meaning, use your name so

The
only thing I'll add is that most short story writers (speaking for myself and
most of the writers I know) would be happy to sell options on their stories. And usually for not that
much, in the grand scheme of things.

Jim is correct, it's a matter of getting permission from the copyright owner,
who is probably the original author but sometimes a publisher, depending on
what rights the author licensed on publication.
If the story was published prior to 1923, it is probably in the public
domain, that is, no longer covered by copyright. (See
http://www.copylaw.com/new_articles/PublicDomain.html
for details, including cautions.) This means that a huge amount of classice
literature is free to use, with only common courtesy requiring acknowledgment
of the source.

It's pretty much the same as optioning / getting rights to any story. Find the
copyright owner and make an arrangement with them.
My question is finding good short stories. The number of places publishing
short stories has been declining for a long time.

Yes, I have acted in several original published short stories and have produced several and not acted in them.
In the short story look at who owns the copyright. Usually a recent publication even has a web site. Of course a search on the internet of the author may actually turn up a web site. Either way, you do want to make contact with the owner of the copyright. You will want to gain a release to make the short or feature. The process is the same for pretty much any length.
Anyone have any experience with script ideas that come from short stories? How would you go about getting permissions? I have seen many films that show attributes to a short story and acknowledge the author
and the title of the story.

I can't recall whether this has been mentioned here yet, but if not,
there will be a free (no entry fee, no admission charge) film festival
in Greensboro December 20, at the Open Space Cafe Theatre, 4609 Market
Street ( http://www.osctheatre.com ) starting 7:30 pm.
This is something like the 48-hour film festival in that films have to
fit into one of these categories:
STARRING THE FRUITCAKE. The main character of your
film must be a fruitcake.
BAD SANTA. The film must feature Santa in a non-traditional
Santa role, preferably a Santa in trouble.
HOLIDAY SWEETS. Make the sappiest, gushiest, tearjerker
sticky-sweetest holiday movie ever.
HUMANS MUST DIE (Happy Holidays). Your film must
feature NO human beings AND must be about the holidays
(think reindeer, elves, toys, iPhones as ornaments, etc.).
MISSLETOE. That is the correct spelling. Your film must show
how we can create peace on Earth with mistletoe.

NOTE: if you are on the TFSIGNC Yahoo Group, you probably will
receive two copies of this email. If you got ONE copy, you will want
to get on the list for future communications.
-----------------------------------------
The third "organizational" meeting of the Triangle Filmmakers special
interest group was held in Durham last Thursday, November 15th.
The meeting was attended by about 20 Triangle Filmmakers and film-
oriented folks. The primary subject of the meeting was to brainstorm
around possible programs for future meetings, in keeping with the
idea of shifting from "organizing" to "doing."
Everyone is urged to join the Yahoo group so that we have a single
mailing list vehicle. Prior to sending out these notes, I sent one
more "invite" to everyone on the list for any of the meetings who was
not yet on the Yahoo group. Note: some folks have joined with a
different email than the one I have recorded and without any info in
their yahoo profile, effectively rendering them "anonymous." Since
this is a face to face group, please populate your Yahoo profile with
your name, or enough of your name so that folks from this meeting can
recognize who you are.
Josh Johnson (the raleigh guy) is now an additional moderator of the
Yahoo Group. We will explore some other websites and web
possibilities, but let's get everyone on the Yahoo group first.
Meeting reminders will automatically go to everyone on the Yahoo group.
In addition, we want to continue to reach out and widen the circle of
filmmakers. Please make any of your film acquaintances aware of the
group and if you send me their email, I will send them an "invite."
Some of the ideas thrown out for possible future programs in Jan /
Feb / March:
- if a member has a short at rough cut, we could show it and devote
the meeting to feedback and discussion
- more simply, just show some short films from members and have a
discussion (max 30 minutes?)
- camera comparison. Aravind semi-volunteered to organize this,
although it may be more of a Saturday workshop event than an evening
event, to do justice to the subject. Idea would be to bring actual
samples of current HDV / HD cameras and host a discussion by actual
users.
- legal issues for filmmakers. JD volunteered his lawyer, David
Crump (I think it was?) for an evening session on legal issues
filmmakers have to deal with.
- session on how to run a film festival was suggested. Since Jim is
involved with Carrboro Film Festival and Todd is running the "All
American Film Festival" -- in March, now accepting submissions --
this might be an interesting discussion / evening. We would recruit
Nic Beery, who is the real organizer of the Carrboro Film Festival.
(which, btw, had a great day of films last Sunday - you should have
been there!)
- Other technical workshop discussions: audio was one, lighting is
another.
- Possibly a "table read" of a short script by actors (free pizza?)
followed by a discussion and feedback.
- bring your favorite scene as a clip and we will discuss why you
like it and how it strikes others.
We also discussed the possibility of shifting meetings (once or more
times or forever?) to the School of Communication Arts (north of
Raleigh) which has a wonderful projection / theater space. Maybe for
January.
January meeting is planned for Thursday January 24th (which is the
FOURTH thursday but only for January). More info about WHERE and
WHAT will be coming over Christmas.

Dear Friend:
Every time I direct a new film, I am struck anew at the power of
cooperation. Working with a team - who helps me secure locations,
gather wardrobe, compose music, edit shots, and more - I always
accomplish far more than I ever could on my own.
Now I am inviting you to join our team, and to support the crucial work
of the DC Film Alliance (DCFA), a new non-profit that I was happy to help
form last year. The DCFA's primary purpose is to support, elevate,
and promote the region's media arts scene. In addition to workshops
and networking opportunities, we help media artists realize their
creative goals by strengthening the collaboration between the
organizations that serve them. This includes film festivals,
screening venues, and member organizations that support media
professionals. The DC Film Alliance provides opportunity for these
service organizations to better communicate with one another, share
resources, and feel the power of teamwork!
Your support will help us to: facilitate our popular quarterly meetings
among over 40 community partners; provide a comprehensive electronic
Central Calendar of all the region's film and video events; run the
monthly DC Film Salon for independent filmmakers; continue our
educational outreach efforts to groups such as DCTV's Film Camp; support
programs such as the annual DC Shorts Film Festival; and compile a new
Economic Impact Statement, proving for area leaders the profound impact
our industry has on the region's monetary health and vibrancy.
Please give generously! Your gift is completely tax deductible. We can't
do it without you. All donors will be acknowledged on our web site.
P.S. You can also support our efforts, and those of our community
partners, by purchasing a
Red Carpet VIP Pass. It makes a great holiday gift!
Passes allow entry to the opening night screening and opening party of
more than a dozen different area film festivals througout 2008! A
full list of festivals is on the web site - and more festivals are being
added every week. The cost of the pass is $300, and the
tax-deductible portion of this donation is $100. Please consider
purchasing a Red Carpet pass, in addition to your gift to the DC Film
Alliance!

Third and final organizational meeting (well, maybe we need to get
more organized) Thursday, Nov 15th at 7:30PM (not 7PM) at Insight
Studio 54 in Durham on Hwy 54.
I want to discuss possible program-ish topics for future
meetings. One thing I am interested in is having a meeting where a
member who is in rough stage with a film (maybe up to about 20
minutes or so) shows the film and we have an extended discussion with
the filmmaker. Especially useful if someone in the group has a rough
cut but is stymied on various possible edits to finalize.
Just one idea; let's hear yours.
cheers,
Jim McQuaid
