Hi Bilge:
Long time no see!
I hope Malick uses a voice-over in TNW, and I hope he
goes with Pocahantas' character as the guiding vision
for the film. It would make sense, as the conflict of
the story originates in her character, and we know
from his first two films, and to some degree from
TTRL, that Malick likes to explore the idea of
romantic love, which Pocahantas' character also
symbolizes.
However he may arrived at the decision to do VOs in
his first three films, they are what make his films a
cut above. That's because they're all actually HIS
voice. I remember reading that Malick worked with
Linda Manz for several months on the VOs in DoH, and I
also remember reading that he let her ad lib, but he
had to have given her the basic framework of what *he*
wanted to convey through her voice, and he knows how
to achieve that delicate balance between not saying
enough and saying too much--in other words, his VOs,
especially in *Badlands* and *DoH* have an authentic
ring.
Whenever I see a film that uses a VO, I subconsciously
compare it to Malick's VOs. One film I remember that
struggled overly hard to approach depth in VOs and
ultimately fell short was *Platoon.* I conjecture this
was because you could tell Stone/Sheen was trying *too
hard* to sound "deep." Same problem for me in TTRL,
which I realize is sacrilege to some, but hey, even
Malick's slight weak spots are ultimately redeemed by
his overall genius!
