Hi, Malickians!!!
I’m a new member of the discussion group. My name is Francesco and I live in
Bologna (Italy). I’ve seen a Malick film for the first time in 1997: it was Days
of Heaven. I loved it, because at the time I thought it looked like a greek
tragedy. And I also liked its symphonic structure. The following year I had the
opportunity to see The Thin Red Line in theatres. Only afterwards I found the
way of seeing Badlands. The three films put together make Malick one of the
greatest directors of present-day cinema, and probably of all times.
What can I say about myself? I began to appreciate (and study) cinema when I was
attending the fourth year of “Liceo” (that is italian secondary school). My
mentor was Stanley Kubrick (I really don’t remember which of his works came
first, but I think it was 2001). While studying philosophy at the university of
Bologna, I began to write about cinema and films and after a while an italian
monthly journal (“Cineforum”) decided to publish some of my articles. Well, some
years have passed from then. Now I’m 26 years old and I’m attending a PhD in
Aesthetics at the University of Bologna (my thesis is on the conception of
language and image in Heidegger). As far as cinema in concerned, I’ve written a
couple of essays for books (on Hou Hsiao-hsien, Tarkovskij, cinema and
photography) and I’ve carried on my collaboration with “Cineforum”.
Some time ago an italian editor accepted my proposal to write a book on Malick
and now I’m in the middle of the work. I got acquaintend with your discussion
group only a few weeks ago. I’ve read some really interesting notes (recent and
past), and they gave me useful suggestions. So I decided to join the group.
I’d like to be constructive in some way, and so I’ve decided to point out the
most stimulating essays and articles recenly published in Italy. Here is a list:
1) Mario Pezzella, «Immagini di guerra. Considerazioni su La sottile linea
rossa di Terrence Malick», in Estetica, n°2, 2003, 163-173.
2) Fabrizio Borin, «Spicchi d’arance amare e ruvide scorze kubrickiane: La
rabbia giovane (Badlands) di Terrence Malick», in Flavio Gregori (edited by),
Singin’ in the Brain. Il mondo distopico di A Clockwork Orange, Lindau, Torino
2004, pp. 149-166.
3) Special number of DVD Cult dedicated to Badlands (80 pages on the film).
4) Giampiero Frasca, «Guerra. La sottile linea rossa», in Luca Aimeri,
Giampiero Frasca, Manuale dei generi cinematografici. Hollywood: dalle origini a
oggi, UTET Libreria, Torino 2002, pp. 240-251.
5) Sergio Arecco, «Malick e il gotico americano», in Sergio Arecco, Il
paesaggio del cinema, Le Mani, Genova 2001, pp. 59-71.
Let me know if some of you is interested in having further information.
Regards,
Francesco
