Angela - I too am a huge fan of Elina Lowensohn (be still my heart!). As
well as the excellent credits you mentioned, she was also great in a
particularly hilarious episode of SEINFELD! And a memorable 'pixelvision'
film of the early 90s by Michael Almereyda (NADJA) called ANOTHER GIRL
ANOTHER PLANET. But best of all is her role in a remarkable French movie
called SOMBRE (1998) - directed by a guy named Philippe Grandrieux, who is
kinda like the punk Malick, filming the extreme scenes Terry would never
film!! Actually, come to think of it, there is a lot that unites these
filmmakers: both started with a serial killer story, both gravitate to
themes of war and nature and death (Grandrieux's second film THE NEW LIFE is
set in a devastated Sarejevo), both refer to the silent cinema of Murnau,
both construct amazingly dense soundtracks ... Actually, I would go so far
as to say that SOMBRE is as significant a 'first feature' in cinema history
as BADLANDS, which is the highest possible compliment!
I have written about both of Grandrieux's films to date: about SOMBRE in the
first issue of SENSES OF CINEMA (www.sensesofcinema.com) and THE NEW LIFE in
the coming issue of KINOEYE (www.kinoeye.org). There is a book of essays
coming out soon in French (I'm in that, too) called NOUVELLE VIE, NOUVELLE
VISION about his second film which I believe will also contain a DVD of THE
NEW LIFE.
There is a wonderful interview (translated into English by moi) with
Grandrieux (a lovely guy, by the way) in the first issue of ROUGE
(www.rouge.com.au), conducted by his biggest champion, Nicole Brenez, editor
of the French book.
Finally, I will confess that while surfing I once found a website which is
comprised of nothing but photos of Elina Lowensohn !!!!!! I made amends
immediately afterwards by re-reading Malick's translation of Heidegger!!!
