•THICKER THAN WATER (1935),
Oliver's in trouble with his wife after missing a payment on their
furniture, having given the money to Stanley, who used it instead to
pay Mrs. Hardy for his room and board. While doing the dishes, Stanley
convinces Oliver to withdraw the family's $300 savings and buy the
furniture outright. But they accidentally squander it at an auction
purchasing a grandfather clock, which is promptly destroyed by a
passing truck on the way home. Mrs. Hardy's reaction sends Oliver to
the hospital, where a blood transfusion sourced from Stanley produces
confusing results. Highlight: the "I gave it to him" routine. Also,
that's diminutive Daphne Pollard as Mrs.Hardy, JAMES FINLAYSON as the
furious furniture store owner, and Charlie Hall as the bank teller. The
last "two-reeler" short Stan and Ollie ever made. Cast: STAN LAUREL:

•A DREAM COMES TRUE, aka QUEEN FOR A DAY (1949),
This single-item newsreel (AUSTRALIAN DIARY series) deals with the
visit to Australia by American Beauty Queen, Mrs. Evelyn Mortensen of
Hollywood and her Randolph Scott look-alike husband. Her trip, as
winner of the the Don Lee Broadcasting Company's most popular TV show
competition, "Queen For A Day", took in such sights as San Francisco,
Hawaii, Fiji, Sydney, Brisbane, the Great Barrier Reef, Hobart,
Adelaide and Melbourne. The typical "Australian Diary" series format is
played so straight that, with this material, it verges on self-parody.
Prod. Co: Australian National Film Board. Prod/Dir: Jack S. Allan (RED
MENACE, 1952). 11 mins. ALC

•THE VENGEANCE OF SHE (1968),
"He keeps calling me, he's always calling me... Ayesha..." - Carol
(Olinka Berova)
SHE's back, only she doesn't know who she is! In her dreams, she hears
them — "Ayesha!", they call her to her - across time and space to the
land She used to rule. SHE!
As this wonderful motion picture opens, we encounter the buxom blonde
heroine, the mysterious Carol, (Czechoslovakian bombshell, Olinka
Berova; real name: Olga Schoberová: KOMMISAR X - DRIE GRüNE HUNDE,
1967). She is disoriented, travelling the hills and highways of some
nameless European country, presumed to be France, driven by unknown
forces. A sleazy truck-driver picks her up, thinking he's going to get
lucky. Instead ( - surprise!), he gets killed.
In a trance-like daze, Carol presses on, we discover, towards ‘the
coast’, the Riviera, and, for whatever reason, decides to take off most
of her clothes and swim in her lingerie out to a party yacht. The ship
is owned by a "work hard, play hard" playboy millionaire, his
understanding wife, and a tag-along shrink, Dr. Philip Smith (Edward
Judd: THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE, 1967) - who just so happens to
also be available for romance, and, naturally, takes an interest in
this strange girl with no past.
Luckily for Carol, the ship is going the direction in which she is
being unaccountably forced to travel. The poor girl doesn't know
anything about her past or what she's doing there. She only remembers
her name and the fact that she is Scandinavian ( - with an admittedly
strong Czech accent).
Carol reveals that she is haunted by nightmares in which hallucinatory
voices call her "Ayesha" and beckon her, yet she has no idea what any
of this means. The visions are, of course, manifestations controlled by
the ruthless Magi / High Priest of the “lost” underground City-State
of Kuma, Man Hari (Derek Godfrey), who is guiding the girl to her
destiny there.
When the millionaire is unaccountably stricken with heart trouble, the
ship is forced to pull into the nearest port, whereupon Carol sets out
across the desert, with Dr. Smith, and an (ever-diminishing) circle of
companions, in pursuit. Murder, psychic battles, and the spectacular
vistas of the Mediterranean and the Middle East all add colour to the
journey.
The pair eventually find themselves on the way to Kuma, governed by the
immortal King Killikrates (pron: Killik-rat-eez) ( - John Richardson:
ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (1966), ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER,
1970), who has been led to believe by Man Hari that Carol is the
reincarnation of his 2,000-year-old, long-dead Queen, Ayesha.
Killikrates has promised Man Hari immortality if he can restore the
'soul' of Ayesha in Carol's 'vessel'.
At one time, it transpires, She was the immortal ruler of the world of
Kuma. Feared by all, She had the power to kill all who disobeyed her (
- whippings were a favourite pastime... watch out for the great Archie
( - Little John, from '50s THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD t.v. series),
Duncan (uncredited), in a cameo as the man ordered flogged by Ayesha).
However, She also wanted to be loved, but when She brought her lover
into the flames of immortality, it sealed her fate.
Years later, Killicraties awaits her return (reincarnation), and when
the Magi claim to have found her, he orders that she be reunited with
him in immortality, but this must be done in haste, as the chance to
enter the flames, determined by celestial conjunction, is fast
approaching, and, once gone, will be thousands of years in returning.
But Carol's shrink boyfriend (Judd) - the psychiatrist "who cares" -
isn't crazy about the idea and tries to convince the King au contraire.
As a possible contender for Ayesha's affections, Smith is imprisoned,
but an old Magi named Zo Tar (Noel Willman) confides in him, and
reveals Man Hari's deception to overthrow the King and rule the world.
Will he get out in time??? Will She return to rule her world??? Oh, for
heavens sake!
Long before Spielberg’s Indiana Jones series, there were the movies
that inspired it; movies about adventure, forgotten cities, maidens in
distress, and mystical powers. Okay, you get the picture.
And three years after URSULA ANDRESS made a splash playing Ayesha - the
goddess who must be obeyed - in SHE (1965) ( - also starring Hammer
favourites CHRISTOPHER LEE and PETER CUSHING), came it’s sequel, and
it’s a darn’ good one, too.
In the original movie, adventurers Major Horace Holly (Cushing) and Leo
Vincey (IAN RICHARDSON) stumble upon the Queen's realm. As it turns
out, Ayesha is immortal, and really dangerous. She lures Vincey into
the cold flame of eternal life and turns him into her lost love,
Killikrates. But upon entering the flame, Ayesha loses her own
immortality and crumbles to dust. (This film, in it's own turn, was a
remake of an even earlier, 1935 film of the same name, produced by
Merian C. Cooper, who gave us KING KONG, 1933.)
SHE (1965) was a big success for Hammer and, three years later, the
studio hired MODESTY BLAIZE writer, PETER O'DONNELL, to cobble together
this gorgeous, yet campy follow-up with Killikrates now on waiting
duty. URSULA ANDRESS had no interest in playing the part a second time,
so Czech beauty Olinka Berova took over. Berova, nevertheless, looks
pretty spectacular, especially in the white chiffon gown she wears in
the film's final scenes as she returns to the underground city of the
blue flame, where we discover whether or not she really is Ayesha,
reincarnated from the first picture, or just another nutter under the
spell of crafty New Agers.
All of the 'She' movies are based on books - WISDOM’S DAUGHTER, SHE
AND ALLAN, SHE, and AYESHA: THE RETURN OF SHE - by H. RIDER HAGGARD,
who might also be known for his book KING SOLOMON'S MINES, which
featured adventure hero Allan Quartermain - early precursor to Indy.
THE VENGEANCE OF SHE was also novelised in it’s own right by Peter
Tremayne (Sphere Books, 1978), wherein psychiatrist, Dr. Hugh
Strickland ( - Strickland was also involved in the framing sequence of
The Revenge of Dracula, also by Tremayne - ) treats patient, Noreen
Pemberton, in his clinic. Here it seems another spirit is fighting for
control of Noreen's body - Ayesha, the legendary She!
Despite being the sequel to a remake of a movie based on a series of
novels, if you've never heard of H. RIDER HAGGARD before, and have
never seen any of the "She" movies, that's fine. The Vengeance of She
is a very self-contained film that stands fine in its own right.
Familiarity with the earlier "She"s would simply supply a little more
detail to the back-story.
VENGEANCE was made in the '60s and it feels like it, - ya gotta' love
that swingin' '60s attitude! All Hammer Films productions feature
stunningly attractive leading ladies and THE VENGEANCE OF SHE is no
exception. Hammer made a lot of great adventure movies in the '60s and
THE VENGEANCE OF SHE is definitely high amongst them. The plot is kind
of crazy, but in the very best way. It is deliberately-paced, ritually
so, compared to the films of today, but a little patience pays off with
a movie that has a tremendous scope and some fun special effects. The
film is filled with elaborate sets and great costuming, and, overall,
the special effects are top-notch for the time.
This is definitely a "G"-rated movie. THE VENGEANCE OF SHE is safe and
sanitary, with: some fights; a little ‘mature’ hint of marital
dissatisfaction; a woman in her undies, swimming, et c., but, overall,
this is a tasteful-enough film that it might have came from Disney ( -
and, oh that Disney itself could have aspired to such greatness; THE
LOVE BUG,1968 and THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR, 1961 coming closest).
Compared to contemporary Disney, it is even a little tame. THE
VENGEANCE OF SHE almost tries to reduce or exclude wild action or hot
romance. It's one of those classic flicks where nudity was perverse,
but killing someone in hot blood is OK.
If you don't have an affection for a little bit of campiness, and
classic Hollywood style, this movie isn't for you. On the other hand,
if lost cities, immortal kings, dangerous and powerful mentalists and
totally-hot chicks interest you, sit yourself down for a fun ride to
Kuma.
