DAFFY, JACK, BOB & FIDO!!!
featuring:
•THE PRIZE PEST (1951),
Contestant PORKY PIG wins DAFFY DUCK as the grand prize in the "What's
The Name Of Your Name" radio-quiz giveaway show; in order to avoid
being thrown out, the latter convinces PORKY not to make him angry
because he has a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality and is a schizoid
"Convertible Duck". Dir: ROBERT McKIMSON; Voc: MEL BLANC. 7 mins.
NFVLS.
•ADMISSION FIVE CENTS (c. 1914?),
Early silent comedy. 5 mins. JF.
• DAFFY DUCK AND THE DINOSAUR (1939),
A prehistoric JACK BENNY( - anyone remember him? - ), Casper Caveman,
wakes up and sets off in search of breakfast, accompanied by his pet
brontosaurus, Fido. He spots Daffy swimming in a pond and tries to nail
him with a slingshot, but Daffy escapes the rock by posing as a traffic
cop and blowing a traffic whistle. Realizing its mistake, the rock
comes back after Daffy, but, instead, hits Fido; the stunned dinosaur
dances ballet for a while before passing out. Casper next tries to club
a likeness of Daffy painted on a rock, which gives him a case of
tremors. The caveman tries to jump in the pond after Daffy, but is
stopped by a "No Swimming" sign. Daffy sets up an array of signage
directing Casper and Fido toward a duck dinner: "the most delicious
duck ever" et c. The duck in question turns out to be 50 foot tall ( -
a huge balloon, inflated by Daffy - ). Daffy hands Casper a knife, and
when he sinks it into the inflatable duck, it explodes, sending
caveman, duck and dinosaur up to heaven. "Hmm, maybe that wasn't such a
hot idea after all," muses Daffy on his cloud. Directed by CHUCK JONES.
8 mins. NFVLS.
•THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM: "Jack Goes To The Cafeteria", Season 12, #8.
10 December 1961.
Jack visits the studio commissary. In the opening segment, Jack
practices his lines on the bus on the way to the rehearsal for his
show. When Jack arrives, he flirts with Jane, then invites her to
lunch. Jack takes Jane to lunch at a cafeteria. He and Jane rehearse
their lines for a skit about a fight between a husband and a wife;
everyone in the cafeteria takes sides, and a brawl ensues. Contains
original 1960s American TV ads for "ENCO" ( - ESSO to us; "Put a tiger
in your tank" - ) gasoline, and for "Sir Walter Raleigh pipe tobacco",
probably added during syndication, as other reports of this episode
indicate that there was a live Lipton's Tea ad in the programme,
delivered by Don Wilson with a parrot, the latter which did so well
that Jack fires Don. This episode also is reported to have contained a
segment where, while Don and the director are waiting for Jack to
arrive, JANE MORGAN sang "The Second Time Around", but this also is,
perhaps mercifully, missing from this print. Episode Number: 157. Guest
Stars: JANE MORGAN (as herself) Dave Willock (as ) Ross Elliott,
Shirley Mitchell, Benny Rubin, Frank Gerstle, Mimi Doyle, Ginny Tyler,
Victor Sen Yung (as Cafeteria Chef) VITO SCOTTI (as Cafeteria Chef)
Charity Grace, Edith Simmons, Lee Millar, Robert Bice, NED MILLER(as
Bus rider) George Barrows, Gil Perkins. Exec. Prod: Irving Fein. DoP:
Henry Cronjager. Mus: Mahlon Merrick. Wrs: Sam Perrin & George Balzer &
Al Gordon & Hal Goldman. Dir: FRED DE CORDOVA. Studio: Desilu. Prod Co:
A J & M Production. 20 mins. JF.
and featuring:
•THE ROAD TO MOROCCO (1942),
The third, and generally regarded as the best of CROSBY and HOPEs'
'road' series sees the pair being washed up from a shipwreck on the
African coast where they mount a passing camel and head off towards
Morocco. They arrive penniless and hungry until a local merchant offers
Jeff (CROSBY) money to sell Turkey (HOPE) into slavery. He is forcibly
removed to the palace of Princess Shalmar (LAMOUR) where he becomes her
personal plaything. The film is awash with rapid-fire one liners, sight
gags, songs and calculated absurdities including HOPE's lament for the
Oscar he might have won and the camel's complaint that 'this is the
screwiest picture I've ever been in!' Credits: Prod: Paul Jones. Dir:
David Butler. Wrs: Frank Butler, Don Hartman. Phot. William C. Mellor.
Mus Dir. VICTOR YOUNG. Songs: JOHNNY BURKE, JIMMY VAN HEUSEN. Cast: BOB
HOPE, Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, ANTHONY QUINN, Dona Drake. 81 mins.
NFVLS.

SPLODGE! GETS BOLSHY WHEN IT'S MATES ARE IN TROUBLE!
Our amiable hosts at The Empress Hotel, who supply us with a safe and
congenial space for our exclusive use and enjoyment ( - which we could
never otherwise afford - ) are under siege by nefarious anti-joy
forces, so we are rallying to their help!
If you support Splodge!, you can play YOUR part in helping fight the
sound restrictions unfairly placed on our beloved venue by signing THE
PETITION! And RETURNING IT! ( - You could send it back over to
Splodge!, or straight to the kindly folk at the Empress. If you're
coming to our future screenings, you'll find a hard copy of the
petition at our admin desk.)
http://www.theempresshotel.com.au/fair%20go.htm
- Splodge! says thanks for you consideration in this matter. You could
not begin to imagine how much our l'il film society owes these people!
"VicMusic supports it. Fair go 4 Live Music supports it.
100s, if not thousands, support it and enjoy it!
This call for help is wider, though, not only punters and musicians
need to respond to this call. Anyone who has taken advantage
of the colourful and diverse live music scene in Melbourne
will be affected by this. The Threat? One resident!
The Empress stands as a 16 year old supporter and promoter of live
music.
And her demise will undermine the value and joy of our inherent musical
talent, and jeopardise the future of local businesses and artists.
The solution? Well! Its starts with your support at the benefit gigs.
Highly regarded artists such as Vika and Linda, The Lucksmiths and
Machine Translations as well as locally celebrated artists such TZU,
Curse of Dialect, Music Vs Physics and The Dave Broadly Band, to name a
few have banded together, making a stand to save a stronghold of the
Melbourne Live music scene currently under fire.
The petition, already signed by so many across Melbourne, is available
at:
http://www.theempresshotel.com.au "
