MONKEY BUSINESS!!!

*IMPUDENCE DOES NOT PAY (1955),
Nutty silhouette film tells the story of a naughty monkey who steals his
hunter's rifle and helmet after an exciting episode, and then taunts the other
animals, even riding on a lion's back. Finally they can bear it no longer and
toss him from his hammock into the open jaws of a crocodile. Prod Co: Progress
Film (West Germany). Dir: Bruno I. Botige. 7 mins. ALC.

*ART, FOR MONKEE’S SAKE (1967),
Episode 37 from THE MONKEES tv series. On Mike's urging, Peter goes to a museum
to be inspired by "the great painters" but instead gets conned into copying a
Rembrandt for a couple of corrupt security guards/art thieves (Monty Landis and
Vic Tayback) who switch Peter's paintings for original masterpieces. LIBERACE
makes a cameo APPEARANCE.
Among the pre-fab four's finest - ridiculous, hilarious - moments. Fruit of a
lysergic imagination, this youth-relevant sitcom explored a twilite tv realm of
psychedelic slapstick, providing the precedent for later comic series like The
Goodies (Thames, UK), Wayzguus (ABC, Australia) and, ultimately, David Lynch &
Mark Frost's unseen (because cancelled, pre-broadcast) On The Air. Ep 37 hails
from the anarchic second (final!) series, and exploits the superabundant
absurdity of 'modern art' for delightfully comic ends ( - watch Mike collapse
with helpless laughter during the Liberace bit!). Wr: Coslough Johnson. Dir:
Alex Singer. Cast: Guest Stars: Vic [ http://us.imdb.com/Name?Tayback,+Vic ]
Tayback and Liberace. Songs include: DAYDREAM BELIEVER, I WANNA BE FREE, and
RANDY SCOUSE GIT. ~25 mins. NF.

*TARZAN’S SOUTH YARRA ADVENTURE (1984),
From the savage fury of a Masuubi sacrificial rite, the Lord of the Jungle is
catapulted through time and space to discover sex, drugs, rock'n roll and the
beautiful people of South Yarra. Prod: Swinburne Film School. Dir. Ray Boseley.
~16 mins. VCA.

*TARZAN AND HIS MATE (1934),
Harry Holt and his ne'er-do-well friend and womanizer, Martin Arlington, leave
on a trip to recover a cache of ivory atop the Mutia Escarpment, the domain of
Tarzan.
When Tarzan learns that the two men wish to loot the elephant's graveyard, he
will have nothing to do with it; Martin shoots an elephant so it can act as an
'instinctive' guide. Only Jane's intervention prevents Tarzan from killing
Martin for his mistreatment of the beast.
Martin's attempt to remove the ivory is thwarted when Tarzan appears with a herd
of elephants. Martin feigns repentance, and promises to leave the next day
without the ivory.
Early the next morning however, Martin attempts to kill Tarzan, and Jane,
thinking him dead, decides to return to civilization. But they are attacked by
'lion men', who summon lions to help them kill the members of the safari. Both
Martin and Holt are killed, and Jane is in danger from lions.
Then, Tarzan and an army of apes and elephants arrive in time to repell both the
lion men and the lions, after which they return the ivory to the elephants'
graveyard and restore peace to the jungle.
The second Tarzan film, starring JOHNNY WEISSMULLER as King of the Apes, finds
him settled down with the Englishwoman Jane in their jungle domain. Widely
considered to be the best in the series, T&HM had above-average production
values (set designer Cedric Gibbons is credited here as co-director), with
well-staged action in the studio jungle. Pre-dating the stiffening of the
industry censorship code in the thirties, TARZAN AND HIS MATE is considerably
less coy about sexuality than the later entrants in the series. Prod: Bernard H.
Hyman. Dir: CEDRIC GIBBONS, [Jack Conway]. Cast: JOHNNY WEISSMULLER, MAUREEN
O'SULLIVAN, NEIL HAMILTON, Paul Cavannagh. 91 mins. NFVLS.
