BIG MACK®!!!

•THE FUN FACTORY (1959),
The tale of MACK SENNETT's rise from movie-extra to King of Comedy.
Also examined are the actors and the style of the MACK SENNETT studio,
Keystone - famous for its KEYSTONE KOPS films. HISTORY OF THE MOTION
PICTURE series. Prod Co: Gregstan Enterprises. Prod: Paul Killiam, Saul
J. Turell. Dir: Saul J. Turell. Print: Sterling Films. 25 mins. ALC.

•THE WACKY WORLD OF MACK SENNETT (19? ),
Excerpts from some early (~1915) MACK SENNETT comedies: - BEN TURPIN
escapes from a bear by the skin of his teeth. - A driver experiences
hair-raising stories. - In a chase, everyone collides with a bunch of
mysterious burglars. 11 mins. JF

•FRACTURED FLICKERS (1963),
Created by FLEISCHER STUDIO-ex, JAY WARD,[ - whom MATT (SIMPSONS)
GROENING claims as a major influence on his own work], and Bill Scott
- the geniuses responsible for CRUSADER RABBIT, HOPPITY HOOPER and the
(transcendental) ROCKY & BULLWINKLE cartoons, this show is an
irreverent, yet reverent ( - don't ask me how they did it, they're
geniuses!! - ) tribute to silent film. Yes, yes, sacrilege, I know,
butchering old silents for the purpose of sending 'em up, but an
incredible show - virtually lost - nonetheless! WARD was a big fan of
the silent cinema, which showed up nowhere better than in DUDLEY
DORIGHT: the title cards, iris head shots, and melodramatic situations
were all spoofs of the movie serials of WARD's youth.

Hosted by a genial, dead-pan HANS CONRIED, FF took classic films ( -
some clips featuring stars like STAN LAUREL, HARRY LANGDON and LON
CHANEY - ; tons of newreel and stock footage), cut them down to around
20 minutes, and gave them nutty new plots with goofy jokes and silly
voice-over dialogue by sound-booth stars of the calibre of (the great)
PAUL FREES and JUNE FORAY, amongst others.

Over its 26 episode run, aired in Melbourne (a lonnngggg time ago) on
Sir Reggie Ansett's Channel 0, the show played host to a mighty cast of
guest celebrity interviewees - whom CONRIED sourced from his time on
STUMP THE STARS - including GYPSY ROSE LEE, ALLAN SHERMAN, ANNETTE
FUNICELLO, EDWARD EVERETT HORTON, PAULA PRENTISS, SEBASTIAN CABOT,
CONNIE STEVENS, ROD SERLING, CAESAR ROMERO, DIANA DORS, PAUL LYNDE,
ANNA MARIA ALBERGHETTI, BARBARA EDEN, BOB DENVER, URSULA ANDRESS, and
even BULLWINKLE J. MOOSE.

CONRIED graciously cops it as much as he dishes it in this fabbo 18th
(or is that the 24th?) installment in this truly bizarre and
notoriously hilarious series. This ep features hot jokester of the
period, BOB NEWHART, picketing the show for exploiting footage of dead
silent film comedians.

A unique, unmissable once-in-a-lifetime, gob-smackingly hilarious
experience, and here are some samples in Real Media format!:

Prod Co: JAY WARD Productions. Prod: JAY WARD, Bill Scott, Ponsonby
Britt, O.B.E. Dir: Bill Hurtz. Wr: George Atkins, Al Burns, Jim
Critchfield, Chris Hayward, Chris Jenkyns, Jim MacGeorge, John
Marshall, PAUL MAZURSKY, Jack Mendelsohn, Bill Scott, Larry Tucker,
Lloyd Turner. Ed: Skip Craig, Roger Donley. Mus: Dennis Farnon, Sheldon
Allman. Host: HANS CONRIED. 26 mins. JF.

•BARNEY OLDFIELD'S RACE FOR A LIFE (1913),
A young virtuous woman, Mabel (the gorgeous MABEL NORMAND), is abducted
by a villainous cad, whose improper advances she rejects, leading to an
extended chase with the Keystone Kops in pursuit. The furious villain
and his henchmen then seize Mabel and chain her to a railroad track.
Mabel's anxious boyfriend turns for help to the great Barney Oldfield,
who jumps in his racing car and speeds to the rescue.
This classic cast pokes fun at conventions of stage melodrama which
were considered old fashioned even in 1913, and the actors (especially
Ford Sterling) overplay with great vigor. Only Barney Oldfield himself
underplays; he was a celebrity at the time, a real-life racer back when
they still wore goggles and scarves, and comes off as a rather bland,
good-natured guy surrounded by lunatics. The mixture of suspense,
melodrama and comedy was conceived to take advantage of Oldfield's
sporting prowess. The finale features the frenetic KEYSTONE KOPS, and a
surprise closing gag - which is genuinely funny. Prod. Co: Keystone
Film Company. Prod: MACK SENNETT. Dir: MACK SENNETT. Mus: John Muri.
Cast: MABEL NORMAND (Mabel), MACK SENNETT (Mabel's Boyfriend), Ford
Sterling (The Villain), Hank Mann, Barney Oldfield (Himself), Al St.
John, Helen Holmes, William Hauber. 15 mins. NFVLS.

•FRANK CAPRA AT KEYSTONE [THE MOTION PICTURE AS ENTERTAINMENT] (1974),
Documentary dealing with CAPRA's involvement with MACK SENNETT and his
Keystone Film Company, and the production of early comedy films. CAPRA
reflects upon the reasons that led him into filmmaking. FRANK CAPRA -
THE MAN ABOVE THE TITLE series. Prod Co: United States Information
Agency. Prod/Dir: Lawrence Ott. 40 mins. ALC.

*BRIGHT EYES (1921),
A gawky young man, reputed rich, is received into a wealthy family,
engaged to the daughter, denounced as an impostor, reduced to the
kitchen, there flirts with the maid, is restored to favour, and nobly
refusing the daughter's hand, marries the maid. BEN TURPIN does a good
job, but much of the gaiety of BRIGHT EYES depends upon someone who is
a dead-ringer for CHESTER CONKLIN, playing another servant in the
house, bundling himself up in furs like Peary in the Arctic, bidding
farewell at an imaginary outpost of civilization, and striding into a
huge refrigerator - all to bring back a ham before the adoring eyes of
the cook! Prod. MACK SENNETT. Dir: Roy (BORN TO DANCE, 1936) Del Ruth,
Malcolm St. Clair. Wr. MACK SENNETT. Cast: BEN TURPIN, Andy Anderson,
Billy Bevan, Phyllis Haver, Kalla Pasha. 14 mins. NFVLS.
