Hi folks,
Here's the notification of another VERY special Splodge! (It'll be our
5TH. BIRTHDAY (erk!) show too. Who woulda thunk it?!)
After our highly successful (phew!) screening of THE RISE AND RISE OF
MICHAEL RIMMER (1970) a few weeks back, we've been emboldened to seek
out more quality cinematic gems hitherto unavailable to us, - even if
it does mean laying out a little more than we usually like to. This
time we're busting with pride to be able to announce that we've secured
a right little Eurotrash corker with SATANIK (1968), and we're running
it on Monday 21. of October.
Because of the special nature of this screening, once again we're
obliged to suspend our usual very generous offer to SPLODGE! visitors -
to wit, the "Casual Visitors Book" will be closed for the evening. It
is, nonetheless, an opportunity for newbies to become members of
Splodge! at the very reasonable price of $6/$7 for the calendar
quarter. Believe me, it's worth it when you see what we've got lined up
for November.
Please also note that, due to Cup Eve being Cup Eve, there will be no
Splodge! on the 5th. of November.
Hope to see you all at our next very special event!

BODY BITS!!!
*TOILETTE (1976),
Black comedy in plastercine animation, a dilemma of identity. A woman,
a faceless female figure, uncertain of who she is, examines herself in
a mirror. Unhappy with her appearance, she pats and pulls and reshapes
her features. Throughout the film she experiments with various outfits,
make-up and wigs. Nothing pleases her, and in the end she reverts to
anonymity and returns to bed defeated. A tragi-comedy that's difficult
to forget. Prod Co: Carpenter Center for Visual Arts, Harvard Uni.
Prod/Dir: Joan Freeman. 6 mins. ALC.
*SIZE 10 (1978),
A discussion about body images, sexuality, society, conditioning of
what women should look like, how the fashion industry profits from
women's insecurities and the pressures on women to conform. Prod Co:
Australian Film Commission Experimental Film Fund. Eds: Sarah (ASIA
PACIFIC?)Gibson, Susan Lambert (both: ON GUARD, 1984). Phot: Sarah
Gibson, Susan Lambert, Martha Ansara. 18 mins. NFVLS.
*GAP-TOOTHED WOMEN (1987),
Quirky indie documentary constitutes a charming valentine to women born
with a space between their teeth. It's an Honour Roll of Fame that
includes Cleopatra, Chaucer's Wife of Bath, US Supreme Court Justice
Sandra Day O'Conner and Lauren Hutton. But the majority are "regular"
folk who tell tales about growing up with a complex in their minds over
the gap in their mouths. One woman tells how she went to bed every
night wearing a rubber band across her mouth, trying to "stretch" her
mouth back into place. Another gap-toothed women became an artist who
explored the use of such women as seductresses in art. Quietly-witty,
never-less-than fascinating, and, in its own modest way, GTW says a lot
about the expectations our society puts on women whose forms are less
than "perfect", 'though it's that very lack of perfection that shows
these women at their most charming. The final interviewee is a BELLY
DANCER who subtly-but-movingly tells how she overcame cancer, and now
even her worst day is something to which to look forward. As per usual
with movies, the best films are usually the most overlooked.
Gap-Toothed Women is one of the most charming, life-affirming and
unjustly underrated movies in all of cinema.
Les Blank creates a humorous, insightful salute to female diversity ( -
interviews were conducted with over one hundred women, thirty of whom
appear on camera), starting with somewhat narrow criteria, taking a
deeper look at issues like self-esteem and societal attitudes toward
standards of beauty, and expanding into a light-hearted, whimsical and
witty look at life in general. Les Blank's film began with a lingering
fascination with a gap-toothed middle-school classmate. When he
learned, while reading Chaucer in college, that the Wife of Bath's
gapped teeth were a sign of sensuality and carnal lustfulness, Blank
found himself once again thinking about his old classmate and
regretting that he hadn't been "bolder" in approaching her. Later,
during a spate of unsuccessful American Film Institute funding
proposals, he pitched, on a whim, a gap-toothed-women film to them and,
on a lark, they went for it thinking it would be a good women's issues
flick. A must for lovers of offbeat, humanistic docos. Prod Co: Flower
Films. Dir, Phot: LES BLANK. Ed: Maureen Gosling. Cast: LAUREN HUTTON,
Sandra Day O'Connor, (belly dancer) Sharlyn Sawyer. 30 mins. NFVLS.
*SATANIK (1968),
Kinky tale of horribly-disfigured female scientist Dr. Marny Bannister,
who, on quaffing her colleagues's new rejuvenation formula, becomes
youthful and beautiful in appearance, only to be - you-guessed-it -
transformed into a criminally insane murderess, embarking on a cruel
spree of ill-fated seductions, and nightclub torch-singing. Her
schemes eventually backfire as the potion loses potency and she
transforms back to her former incarnation.
Revelling in her newly-acquired vitality, the formerly repulsive Dr.
Bannister seduces a blackmailer and fencer of precious gems, Van Donen
(who is subsequently bumped off by a gang of criminals headed by Luis),
in order to flee Madrid where the first part of the movie takes place.
Of course, as is the case with all rejuvenation formulae in the movies,
from Dr. Jeckyl's to Julius Kelp's, Marny discovers soon enough that
the effect is only temporary and doesn't hesitate to kill when cornered
in the quest for more of the stuff. Arriving in Geneva under the
assumed identity of Star, Luis (now deceased)'s lover, she makes
contact with the dead man's brother and wastes no time in bewitching
him also.
Meanwhile Inspector Trent (Satanik's nemesis and most determined
opponent in the comic-book series) and Commisioner Dodo LaRoche are hot
on the mystery woman's twisting trail, although a little confused as to
whether they are chasing an old, disfigured female or a blonde
bombshell.
Director Vivarelli (aka Donald Murray) began his career making musicals
and later made hard-core porn films with Moana Pozzi, but is not averse
to a bit of dabbling in philosophy, in particular Foucault,
Merleau-Ponty, Benjamin, Derrida, Carmelo Bene and Pasolini. Famous
Italian director Pupi Avati was Assistant Director on this film, and
commented that if Vivarelli could direct a film then so could he.
Satanik based on a popular fantasy comic by Max Bunker. Good '60s
Eurotrash horror starring STUNNING HUNGARIAN BEAUTY Magda Konopka.
Spanish-Italian Co-production. Dir: Piero Vivarelli. Wr: Eduardo M.
Brochero. Prod: Romano Mussolini. DP: Silvano Ippoliti. Mus: Manuel
Parada. Starring: Magda Konopka, Julio Pena, Armando Calvo, Umberto
Raho, Luigi Mortini, Mimma Ippoliti, Antonio Pica, Isarco Ravioli, Luis
de Tejada. 80 mins.
