TRES MYSTEREUSE!!!
*INDIAN FANTASY (AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS) (1938)/(1955),
This sum of all scenes already completed by 1939 from a never-finished,
full-length animated, colour feature cartoon of JULES VERNE's Around
The World In Eighty Days opens with the famous meeting at the Reform
Club in 1872. Philéas Fogg - mysterious gentleman of British High
Society - wagers £20,000 that he can make his famous trip around the
world in 80 days. Departing that same evening with his French servant
Jean Passepartout, they arrive in India, where they save a young woman
about to be burned alive on a pyre.
In 1937, animator and designer Anthony Gross
<http://www.redfern-gallery.co.uk/pages/artistinfo/32.html> visited
American producer Hector Hoppin - both of whom had worked previously on
LA JOIE DE VIVRE (1934) and FOX HUNT (1936/1937) - in Grindelwald,
Switzerland, to prepare a script for a full-length animated, colour
feature adaptation of the JULES VERNE classic. In 1938, an
international team comprised of Gross, Hoppin, David Patee, Hungarian
Laszlo, composer Tibor Harsanyi, the Russian cameraman Kostia Tchikine,
and some others, established itself in Alesia Street, Paris, to produce
the first French feature-length colour animated film, financed by
ALEXANDER KORDA (London Films) but made in France. In 1939, Around the
World gouaches were exhibited at the City of Paris' Petit Palais
Exhibition, but WWII broke up the team, and the Hoppin-Gross company
disappeared. It was an opportunity, it seems in retrospect, which was
not meant to be. All traces of the work had been believed to be lost,
until fragments were rediscovered in a musty projection room at the
National Film Theatre, London in 1956. A reel of negatives from the
London lab of TechnicolorTM was all that remained, and, with the
assistance of the British Film Institute's Experimental Production
Fund, contributing some transitional scenes, such as - for example, the
animated diagrams of the voyage through India via the Suez Canal - it
was possible to put together a usable, coherent, even vivacious film of
great beauty.
The design, the colour-pallet, which only the informed eye of a painter
would have been able to choose - the intelligent animation of the
characters - distinctively crafted, preceded the revival of these
styles in the second half of the 20th. Century. Hoppin and Gross forged
a path which owed nothing to anybody. These artists were innovators,
not followers. Good-bye Fleischer, Disney, Grimault and the like.
Of all the full-length film projects between 1938 and 1939 that arose
from French producers keen to follow the success of Disney's SNOW WHITE
(1937), AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS by Hoppin and Gross –comprising
this miraculously preserved remaining third - is truly the only one
which shines like a beacon turned towards the future. Despite some of
its technical weaknesses and truncated form, the film represents a
substantial achievement in the light of Gross and Hoppin’s earlier
works. TechnicolorTM. Prod Co: Animat Studios. Dirs: Anthony Gross,
Hector Hoppin. Narr: DONALD PLEASENCE. 17 mins. NFVLS.
*THE TREASURE IN THE PYRAMID [Poklad v pyramide] (1973),
Hilarious cryptic chase cartoon - actually the sixth episode in the
cut-out animation series THE KILLING FRAGRANCE, set in an exotic South
American jungle locale, with a touch of JULES VERNE, Indiana Jones ( -
and Flipper!). We resume the story as brave hero-type Lucius sets Zea
free from Doctor Goad and his fellow-gangsters, and spoils their plan
to steal a treasure hidden in a Mayan pyramid. ( - Episodes in The
Killing Fragrance series: The Drown Submarine • The Killing Fragrance •
A Purgative Bath • A Spoilt Wedding • The Stolen Portrait • The
Treasure in the Pyramid • The Unfinished Weekend.) Prod: KF a.s. - Jiri
Trnka Studio. Dir: Vaclav Bedrich. Des: Vladimir Kladiva. 10 mins. ALC.
*TINTIN AND THE BLUE ORANGES (1964),
Professor Calculus appears on television, presenting his latest work, a
book called "The Earth Is Starving". He urges the scientists of Earth
to try and solve the malnutrition problem. His Spanish colleague,
world-famous scientist Prof. Antemar Zalamea, sends him a specimen in a
parcel - a blue orange, which is said to be able to grow on desert
soil. But there's a lot of interest surrounding this phosphorescent
fruit and, the following night, it is stolen. Calculus goes to Spain to
meet Zalamea, but before the two scientists can meet, they are
kidnapped, so Tintin, Captain Haddock and trusty dog Milou ( - that’s
Snowy to us Anglophones) set off in hot pursuit, tracing the Professor
to Valencia where they find their friends are being held prisoner by a
fiendish arch-criminal. With the help of some children, and after much
to~ing and fro~ing, Tintin and Captain Haddock manage to expose the
villains and release the scientists and eventually Calculus and Zalamea
are able to return to their important research. A highlight of the film
occurs when Captain Haddock, - and anyone who has read a Tintin book
knows that the good captain likes his drink and will try anything to
have one - finds a bottle of whiskey and attempts to get stuck into it
while Tintin tries to get him to check out the clues he has found.
As soon as Tintin started to become popular (after WWII), the idea of
taking his adventures to the big screen came up. TINTIN AND THE BLUE
ORANGES (1964) was the second of two Tintin feature films. This movie,
like its predecessor, THE MYSTERY OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE (1961) was also
live-action, and hardback photo-comics were produced in conjunction
with both films. Jean-Pierre Talbot makes for an athletic Tintin and
resembles the character physically, which is what counts. Jean Bouise
as Captain Haddock is rather silly and a lot more like the comic book
character than his incarnation in the previous movie (George Wilson).
The story is typical Tintin fare, with adventure in exotic places,
over-the-top bad guys etc. et c. The film does have some great comic
moments, and fans of the original Tintin cartoons are sure to find
something to delight them in THE BLUE ORANGES. Based on the characters
from the comic created by Hergé. Prod. Co: Alliance de Production
Cinematograf, Paris, & Production Cinematograf Rodas, Madrid. Prod:
André Barret, Robert Laffont. Dist: Consortium Pathé & Procusa - Rafael
Carrillo. Dir. Philippe Condroyer. Phot. Jean Badal (Eastmancolor).
Mus: Antoine Duhamel Blondin. Wr. André Barret, Francisco Gonzálvez &
Antonio Giménez Rico. Cast: Jean-Pierre Talbot, Jean Bouise, Félix
Fernández, Bernabe Barta Barri, Salvador Beguería, Pierre Desgraupes,
Max Elloy, Franky François, André Marié, Jenny Orléans, José
Sazatornil, Pedro Mari Sánchez, Jesús Tordesillas, Ángel Álvarez. 105
