MASKERADE!!!
*THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925),
The familiar story of Erik, much-feared fiend who haunts the Paris
Opera House.
Lurking around the damp, dank passages deep in the cellars of the
theatre, thashing away on his organ, - and with more than a dollop of
Georges Du Maurier's SVENGALI to him - Erik secretly coaches
understudy Christine Daaé to be an opera star. Through a startling
sequence of terrors, - including sending a giant chandelier crashing
down on the opera patrons, the Phantom forces the lead soprano to
withdraw from the opera, permitting Christine to step in. Luring
Christine into his subterranean lair below the opera house, the Phantom
confesses his love.
In this, his most famous role, CHANEY demonstrated his genius for mime,
and his ability to bring humanity to the most deformed of creatures.
Produced by Universal, the film was shot in 1923 and shelved for nearly
two years, and was subjected to intensive studio tinkering. It was both
the stepping-off point for Chaney's run as a superstar at MGM ( - In
MGM's musical HOLLYWOOD REVIEW OF 1929, he even had a jazzy pop tune
sung about him: "Lon Chaney's Gonna Get You If You Don't Watch Out"!),
and the prototype for the horror-film cycle at Universal in the 1930s.
Several scenes in The PotO were filmed in TechnicolorTM. One of them,
the masked ball, appears in somekindacolour in this print,
approximating the original effect. From the novel by Gaston Leroux.
Prod Co: Universal Pictures Corporation. Prod: Carl Laemmle. Dirs:
Rupert Julian, Edward Sedgwick. Wrs: Raymond Shrock, Elliot Clawson.
Phot: Charles Van Enger, Virgil Miller, Milton Bridenbecker. Art dir:
Dan Hall. Cast: LON CHANEY, Mary Philbin. 78 mins. NFVLS.
*Trailer for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925),
Trailer for the 1925 LON CHANEY silent production shows some scenes
from the movie which starred Mary Philbin as Christine, Norman Kerry as
Raoul and CHANEY as Erik the dreaded Phantom. 2 mins. NFVLS.
*DAISY: THE STORY OF A FACELIFT (1982),
An examination of the values that prompt people to alter their looks
through cosmetic surgery. Personal accounts from men and women, young
and old, who have decided to change their bodies are counterbalanced by
comments from professionals who explain the effects of physical
appearance on our lives, finally focusing on the experiences of Daisy
De Bellefeuille, a frank and feisty woman who decides to counter
middle-age with a facelift. The film provides us with a FRONT-ROW SEAT
during a facelift operation (ie. contains ACTUAL SURGERY!!!), as well
as a close-up look at the results. BARF-BAGS WILL BE PROVIDED ON THE
NIGHT FOR THOSE WHO FEEL THEY MIGHT REQUIRE THEM. (Awards: Melbourne,
New York). Prod Co: NFBC. Prod: Michael Rubbo, Giles Walker, Adam
Symansky. Dir: Michael Rubbo. 58 mins. ALC.
