GOON BUT NOT FORGOTTEN!!!
SPIKE MILLIGAN (1918 - 2002)
PETER SELLERS (1925 - 1980)
HARRY SECOMBE (1921 - 2001)
MICHAEL BENTINE (1922 - 1996)
*THE BED SITTING ROOM (1969),
Set in post-nuclear-holocaust England, where a handful of bizarre
characters struggle on with their lives in the ruins, amongst endless
heaps of ash, piles of broken crockery and brick, muddy plains, and
heaps of dentures and old boots. Patriotically singing "God Save Mrs.
Ethel Shroake, Long Live Mrs. Ethel Shroake", they wander through this
surrealistic landscape, forever being warned by the police to "keep
moving", and prone to the occasional mutation into a parrot, cupboard,
or even, yes, a bed-sitting room with "No Wogs" scrawled in the grime
on it's windows. In particular, the story revolves around the odd
"love story" of a girl who lives with her parents in one compartment
of a London Underground train, the commuter in the next compartment,
and the doctor they meet after returning above-ground in search of a
nurse for the heavily pregnant girl. Makes ERASERHEAD (1977) look
positively tasteful by comparison. Dir: RICHARD LESTER. Cast: RITA
TUSHINGHAM, RALPH RICHARDSON, PETER COOK, HARRY SECOMBE, DUDLEY MOORE,
SPIKE MILLIGAN, MICHAEL HORDERN, ROY KINNEAR, Richard Warwick, JIMMY
EDWARDS, ARTHUR LOWE, MONA WASHBOURNE, RONALD FRASER, DANDY NICHOLS,
FRANK THORNTON, MARTY FELDMAN. 90 mins. NFVLS.
*THE DO-IT-YOURSELF CARTOON KIT (1961),
Satire on cartoons, home hobbyists, and box-top specials, in which the
viewer is offered an animation kit, complete with noises, cut-out
characters and stick-anything adhesive glue, all for fifty guineas and
three detergent box tops. MICHAEL (GOON SHOW/POTTY TIME) BENTINE
provided top stiff-upper-lip '50s 'BBC English' narration for this.
Not to mention the outro, the Union Jack with the phrase "A British
Film Made With British Labour" to the strains of a crackly recording
of A-Hunting We Will Go. Anim: BOB GODFREY. Dir: BOB GODFREY, et al.
Narr. MICHAEL BENTINE. 6 mins. NFVLS.
*THE RUNNING, JUMPING AND STANDING STILL FILM (1959),
In the late 1950s, it's reputed that PETER SELLERS, an avid camera
buff, bought himself a 16mm movie camera and, in this, lay the origins
of The THE RUNNING, JUMPING AND STANDING STILL FILM. The RJASSF is
basically one sight gag after another, cleverly crafted yet somewhat
rudimentary; obviously it was produced as an experiment. SELLERS
features as a sly Nimrod who prances around a field and soon engages
in a duel with a muscleman. Other hilarities in the film include a
frustrated photographer at his wits' end, a family of buffoons
dragging an English kite, and the absurd yet cliched boxer signaling a
fool in his direction. Dir: RICHARD (as Dick) LESTER, PETER SELLERS.
Cast: RICHARD LESTER, PETER SELLERS, Mario Fabrizi, SPIKE MILLIGAN,
LEO McKERN. 9 mins. NFVLS.
*"INTIMATIONS" TALKS TO RICHARD LESTER (1966),
Ex-MI5 spook, MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE talks to American-born film director
RICHARD LESTER about the experiences and influences that have affected
his work and his decision to give up psychology for the cinema and
filmmaking. His films include THE RUNNING, JUMPING AND STANDING STILL
FILM (1959), for an Academy AwardTM, and 1st prize at the San
Francisco Film Festival; THE KNACK (1965), which won the Palm D'Or at
Cannes; the Beatles’ films A HARD DAY’S NIGHT (1964), and HELP
(1965), which shared the Grand Prix in the Rio Festival. He has also
written many songs and scripts and directed several hundred
commercials. He talks about the influence of his parents, and
slapstick comedy and its appeal as a reaction to an ordered,
mercantile society. Prod Co: BBC-TV. Prod: Margaret McCall. 32 mins.
AAC.
