 SPECIAL  BLEND!!!!!!

* THE DARK WAVE,
      (1956)

A child is discovered to be an epilepsy sufferer at a junior school in 1950s America, and all hell breaks loose amongst the local townsfolk. Furthermore, what is to be done, and what can it mean when a second case is identified? Is madness and insanity on the rampage, has the safety and security of the community been undermined, or will trust in medical science and drug-based intervention restore the social order?

In the 1950s, the greater public viewed mental illness as a particularly macabre, horrific thing and displayed an unscientific understanding of the conditions involved. Mental illness carried great social stigma -  especially linked with fear of unpredictable and violent behaviour - and sufferers were shunned as social pariahs, and those associated with sufferers reeled from both the potential consequences of social ostracism, in addition to the internalized shame and self-imposed denial, stemming from their own surmised "impurity".

This luscious-looking, twice Oscarâ„¢-nominated ( - Best Documentary, and Best Short Subject), Twentieth Century Fox-produced, two-reel educational docu-drama - showcasing all the lavish production values that a major Hollywood studio could throw into the cause of public education (and the promotion of the CinemaScopeâ„¢ format) - was directed by JEAN NEGULESCO ( O. HENRY'S FULL HOUSE  (1952) [segment "THE LAST LEAF"]  ), with a cast featuring future first-lady of the United States, NANCY REAGAN (born Anne Frances Robbins) - here appearing under her stage name, Nancy Davis - along with Hollywood brick CHARLES BICKFORD. ( The film was originally slated to star LES TREMAYNE - whom we fondly remember from GEORGE PAL's WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953), directed by BYRON HASKIN. )

THE DARK WAVE seems to have been a personal project of (TCF) President Spyros Skouras  (Boxoffice, 7 April, 1956, p. 28), and was sponsored by the (American) Variety Club Foundation. It was the ninth installment in the third series of TCF-produced CINEMASCOPE SPECIALS
short films.

* GILLIGAN'S
   ISLAND:

HAIR TODAY,
    GONE TOMORROW
     (1966)

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=54610416&noresize=1

Gilligan wakes up one morning to find that, overnight, his hair has turned white, and thinks he overhears the Professor pronounce that he has a rare disease, making him age prematurely ( - the disease? -  "follicular albinism"). When the Skipper, Professor and Mrs. Howell attempt  to fix the problem by dyeing his hair brown, the dye causes his hair to fall out. Later on, the Skipper succumbs to the same problem.

A classic line occurs as the other Castaways try to act as though they don't notice Gilligan's baldness -  Mrs. Howell's famous breakfast order: "I think I'll have a hard-
bald egg!"

This episode features an interesting twist when Mary Ann, instead of Ginger - as it usually is - gets to play seductress, as she tries to help Gilligan feel young again.

The theme of episode: Giving others advice is easy - taking it yourself is not so.

*THE GOLDEN
  VOYAGE

     (1974)

Splodge! For You At Home: The Centaur

THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD released in 1974, was the second of a trilogy of Sinbad movies. It followed THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (1958), and preceded SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER (1977). THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD was written by Brian Clemens and RAY HARRYHAUSEN and directed by GORDON HESSLER.

HARRYHAUSEN also contributed his intricate ‘stop-motion’ special effects to THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD. He created countless fantastic creatures and brought them to life in dozens of movies starting in the 1940s. The elaborate visual effects Harryhausen created in THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD give the movie a fantastic feel, without which it would be all the poorer.

THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD begins when Sinbad and his crew obtain a piece of a golden tablet which Sinbad refuses to return to the evil magician, Koura, who claims the tablet belongs to him.

Sinbad soon meets an enchanted Vizier, who discloses to him that he possesses a similar gold tablet which interlocks with Sinbad’s to reveal the second third of a circular medallion. Sinbad and the crew eventually learn that obtaining and connecting all three pieces of the tablet and placing it in the ‘Fountain of Destiny’ will endow the holder with a crown of riches and eternal youth. Knowing this, Sinbad, the Vizier, a slave girl named Margiana - whom Sinbad frees - and a crew of several others, set out to find the third piece of the golden tablet, all the while being pursued by Koura and the creatures he commands through his magic.

Sinbad and his crew set out to find the third piece of the medallion hoping to eventually obtain its magical prize. However, when Margiana is captured by an evil mythical creature, Sinbad realizes that, without her, all of the wealth in the world would mean nothing. The most prominent theme of THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD is that love and freedom should be treasured above all else.

When Sinbad defeats Koura and obtains the medallion, he tosses it into the ‘Fountain of Destiny’ and is then presented with the crown of riches. He selflessly gives it to the Vizier, whose unfortunate enchantment is immediately lifted. However, by wearing the crown of wealth, the Vizier is made a king; Sinbad tells Marigana in the concluding scene of the movie that a king is never truly free; he suggests that freedom, like love, should be treasured and valued above all else.

Although THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD was shot in Spain, the movie was influenced by what was happening in America in the 1970s.

In the '70s, hedonism, as ever, was what was driving Americans. US dollars were spent on bell bottoms, fast cars and entertainment. Inspired by events like the 1969 Woodstock Festival, music and movies became a much more salient influence on American society. Movie making became more sophisticated and ambitious in the '70s, as technical advances combined with a demand for gritty realism on the one hand, and escapist entertainment on the other.

The presence of the '70s in THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD is impossible to overlook, especially as the theme of the movie embodies the American attitude towards the times.

While THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD does not notably draw on motifs or themes from the 1001 NIGHTS, the overall purpose of both the movie and the stories runs  remarkably parallel. The 1001 NIGHTS is a collection of stories that has been told for centuries as a form of entertainment and escape, and THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD is one of the many movies made to serve those same two purposes.

Throughout all of humanity, people have found ways to escape from reality, if just for a while. This idea is embodied in the character of Sinbad, who repeatedly sets sail into unfamiliar and seemingly endless waters in search of something - anything - that can not be found at home.

70 years old, actor John Phillip Law passed away Tuesday, 13 May 2008 at his home in Los Angeles. Law, who studied acting under ELIA KAZAN, gained instant fame in 1966, when director Norman Jewison cast him as a sexy but shy Soviet sailor in the Oscar-nominated comedy, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! (1966). Law went onto star in cult favorites such as Mario Bava's DANGER: DIABOLIK! (1968), and opposite Jane Fonda in BARBARELLA (1968). Law also starred in the controversial film THE SERGEANT (1968), in which he was the object of Rod Steiger's affections, in one of the first films to directly deal with homosexuality in a realistic way. Other major films include  THE LOVE MACHINE (1971), and THE CASSANDRA CROSSING (1976).

Prod Co: Columbia Pictures Corporation . Prod: CHARLES H. SCHNEER, RAY HARRYHAUSEN. Dir: GORDON HESSLER. Wr: Brian Clemens (story), RAY HARRYHAUSEN (story). Phot: Ted Moore. Ed: Roy Watts.
