DETAILS BELOW TONIGHT! - BOOTY CALL!!! • FELIX TRIES FOR TREASURE, (1923) Felix and his friend, little Sammy Johnson, are playing baseball when they discover a map that leads to Lizzie the Pirate Queen's undersea treasure of pearls! Building their own submarine - out of a barrel and a stovepipe - they slip beneath the waves in search of the treasure, and meet up with a variety of aptly named (read "weakly punned") undersea creatures, such as a weakfish, a soused mackerel and, the most dangerous of all - a loan shark. So many bad puns in this one, you'd think it was a Tex Avery cartoon! Prod Co: Pat Sullivan Studios. Prod: M. J. Winkler. Distr: M. J. Winkler Productions. Dir: Pat Sullivan. Anim: Otto Messmer. 7 mins. ALC • PIRATE SHIP (1933)
A girl - or is it a mouse ( - remember, it IS a Paul Terry cartoon - so there must be MICE, usually thousands! - ), or is it a girl - let's just call her a girl mouse - is captured by tuneful pirates. But, never fear, the United States Navy comes to her rescue. The battle ends when the lady mouse is rescued from the scurvy swabs. A short live-action sequence shows actual U.S. Navy ships and airplanes coming to "save" the girl mouse. Not only that, but Jimmy Durante is caricatured as well ( - and we DO love cartoon celebrity caricatures!). The story is framed by having two characters, male and female, (but of indeterminate species... 'though probably mice) reading the story of the pirate ship. The female asks the male if he would rescue her in the manner that the story's hero rescused the damsel. He says he would - which is mighty large of him! Prod Co: TerryToon Cartoons. Prod: Paul Terry. Distr: Educational Pictures; Castle Films. Dir: Frank Moser. Wr: Paul Terry. 6 mins. ALC • TREASURE IN THE
PYRAMID [Poklad v Pyramide] (1973) Hail the return of another great Splodge! favourite - the hilarious cryptic chase cartoon - actually the sixth episode in Vaclav Bedrich's cut-out animation series THE KILLING FRAGRANCE, set in an exotic South American jungle locale, with a touch of JULES VERNE, Indiana Jones ( - and Flipper!). Fantastic 'goodies Vs. baddies' comic-book adventure, in the style of the French silent movie serials of LOUIS FEUILLADE. We resume the story as brave hero-type Lucius sets Zea free from Doctor Goad and his fellow gangsters, and spoils their plan to steal a treasure hidden in a Mayan pyramid. (Episodes in THE KILLING FRAGRANCE series: The Drown Submarine • The Killing Fragrance • A Purgative Bath • A Spoilt Wedding • The Stolen Portrait • The Treasure in the Pyramid • The Unfinished Weekend.) Prod: KF a.s. - Jiri Trnka Studio. Dir: Vaclav Bedrich. Des: Vladimir Kladiva. 10 mins. ALC. plus, Quickie Theatre returns, with: • GOLD DIGGERS OF 1937,
[ Condensed ] (1936) This month's entry for Quickie Theatre is "condensed" - yes, just like a can of Campbell's Soup or a tube of Carnation Evaporated Milk! - and deals with a somewhat different kind of "booty" from the "pirate" variety, but, nonetheless, involves the "digging" of gold, if only in a metaphorical sense. What we've got here is a digest of some of the musical numbers created and directed by BUSBY BERKELEY for GDo 1937, plus their framing scenes, (so we are spared most of the time-consuming plot). The film stars the splendiferous DICK POWELL and JOAN BLONDELL - who were actually married (to each other) at the time - and someone called Victor Moore. The songs are by the teams of HAROLD ARLEN and E.Y. Harburg, and HARRY WARREN and AL DUBIN, and the story was based on the play SWEET MYSTERY OF LIFE by Richard Maibaum, Michael Wallach and George Haight, which ran very briefly on Broadway in 1935. (Maibaum went on to write such James Bond films as FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (1963) and GOLDFINGER (1964) ! ). Warren Duff wrote the screenplay, apparently with the assistance of Tom Warren, who's billed as "Screenplay constructor". GDO 1937 was the fourth in Warner Bros.' series of "Gold Digger" films, following GOLD DIGGERS OF BROADWAY (1929), which is now lost; GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 (1933), which was a remake of the earlier film - and the first to feature BUSBY BERKELEY's extravagant production numbers; and GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935 (1935). It would be followed by GOLD DIGGERS IN PARIS (1938). The production numbers were created, designed, staged and directed by BUSBY BERKELEY. Originally, all the songs for the film were to have been written by HAROLD ARLEN and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, but BERKELEY was dissatisfied and brought in HARRY WARREN and AL DUBIN, who had contributed songs to his previous Warner Bros. films. (Their song "WITH PLENTY OF MONEY AND YOU", which was subtitled "THE GOLD DIGGERS' LULLABY" became a hit). The songs included in Quickie Theatre tonight are: SPEAKING OF THE WEATHER, by HAROLD ARLEN (music) and E.Y. Harburg (lyrics); WITH PLENTY OF MONEY AND YOU (THE GOLD DIGGERS' LULLABY) by Harry Warren (music) and Al Dubin (lyrics); LET'S PUT OUR HEADS TOGETHER" - by Harold Arlen (music) and E. Y. Harburg (lyrics). But the big, trippy, psychedelic climax is BB’s vision of the war of the sexes: ALL IS FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR, by HARRY WARREN (music) and AL DUBIN (lyrics). The staging for this number utilized 104 women in white military uniforms, tapping in military formations and geometric patterns, and involves plenty of “goin’ through the roof”, I can assure you! “One of the things that Buz had that nobody else had, was that on two stages at Warner Brothers they put camera rails up, hung from the rafters... and they had an elevator that would go up and down, and would also run along those rails. The camera was mounted on this platform and then they would motor-drive it, and they could move it all around the stage... in circles, raise it, lower it and everything else. He was the originator of that.”. - Madison Lacy Although BERKELEY had directed GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935 (1935), for this film, the director's chair was occupied by LLOYD BACON, who had collaborated with BERKELEY on 42ND STREET (1933). In 1937, BUSBY BERKELEY was nominated for an Academy Award™ for Best Dance Direction for the ALL'S FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR production number. Prod Co: Warner Brothers Pictures, First National Pictures. Prod: Jack L. Warner, Hal B. Wallis, Earl Baldwin (assoc. prod.). Dir: Lloyd Bacon, BUSBY BERKELEY (musical numbers). Wr: (Play) Richard Maibaum, Michael Wallach, George Haight. Scr: Warren Duff, Tom Warren ("constructor"). Mus: HAROLD ARLEN (music), E.Y. Harburg (lyrics), HARRY WARREN (music), AL DUBIN (lyrics). Phot: Arthur Edeson. Ed: Thomas Richards. Cast: DICK POWELL, JOAN BLONDELL, Victor Moore. 25 min. RM • CAPTAIN SINDBAD
(1963) followed by:Part 2 of Quickie Theatre tonight is a rather splendid adventure/ fantasy film excerpt, starring GUY (LOST IN SPACE / ZORRO) WILLIAMS, along with the wonderful ABRAHAM SOFAER, containing all the usual exciting rigmarole of your typical Sindbad flick, and as near a match for any by HARRYHAUSEN. It is splendid for a number of reasons, chiefest amongst them being that it is a rare occasion indeed when Splodge! runs a true Technicolor™ print, which this one indeed is, and looks every millimetre of it, (of which there are 16). Rich with trick effects, full-blooded performances and vivid colour. Shot in Wonderscope®, and directed by film-genius BYRON ( - THE NAKED JUNGLE (1954) - ) HASKIN, who also, by sheer coincidence, is director on out feature film tonight! An East German production (King Brothers Productions). 10 mins. RM • TREASURE
ISLAND, (1950)
While most are probably familiar with the plot of Robert Louis Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND, I'll briefly sum it up, for those who aren't, whilst still ensuring to leave out more than enough to keep the actual screening fresh enough to enjoy. Young Jim Hawkins has a legendary treasure map come into his possession and he sets sail with a crew on the Hispaniola to find this treasure. Things get murky when there is mutiny aboard the ship, and some crew members have their own ideas about claiming the treasure. Disney veteran Bobby Driscoll, who appeared in the studio's live action films like SONG OF THE SOUTH (1946) and SO DEAR TO MY HEART (1948) , in addition to voicing Peter Pan, plays young Jim Hawkins. As the lone child in a cast of grown men, Driscoll does a fine job playing the protagonist. Meanwhile, ROBERT NEWTON, who also notably played Blackbeard the pirate for RKO two years later, simply shines in the flashy role of Long John Silver, the boat's wooden-legged chief of suspicious characters. NEWTON's scenery-gnawing portrayal has inspired many a subsequent on (and off-)screen pirate characterisation, and I'm thinking particularly of ALBERT SALMI's Alonzo P. Tucker in THE SKY PIRATE (1966), and TREASURE OF THE LOST PLANET (1967) episodes from LOST IN SPACE. FINDLAY CURRIE is ever memorable as Captain Billy Bones. Additionally, worthy of special mention is JOHN LAURIE, whom many will remember from DAD’S ARMY – though this is to overlook a long and distinguished career in British cinema - as Blind Pew. (LAURIE also earns particular mention for his part as Ebenezer Balfour in Disney’s KIDNAPPED (1960). He seems to have “lent” some of his distinctive traits and characteristics to Disney for the development of the film persona of another Disney character – Uncle Scrooge McDuck, whose first significant appearance on screen in animated form (save for a brief cameo appearance on the Mickey Mouse Club television series) was in Disney's 1967 theatrical short SCROOGE MCDUCK AND MONEY, in which he teaches his nephews some basic financial tips. Released in 1950, TREASURE ISLAND is one of Disney's earliest live-action feature films, and, for many, the definitive version (Mr Magoo’s notwithstanding). In fact, it's the studio's first narrative feature film not to employ animation of any kind. As such, it's clear that Disney and company were trying to find their live-action niche, and the film differs in tone from the studio's live-action output that became prevalent later in the decade. Prod Co: Walt Disney Productions. Prod: Director: BYRON HASKIN. Phot: Freddie Young. Costumes: Shelia Graham (uncredited). Cast: Bobby Driscoll (Jim Hawkins), ROBERT NEWTON (Long John Silver), Basil Sydney (Captain Smollett), Walter Fitzgerald (Squire Trelawney), Denis O'Dea (Dr. Livesey), FINLAY CURRIE (Capt. Billy Bones), Ralph Truman (George Merry), Geoffrey Wilkinson (Ben Gunn). John Gregson. 96 Mins. ALC Minor programme changes may occur due to unforseen circumstances.
