• PUCE MOMENT,
(1949)

The soundtrack plays folky rock as a woman prepares, at noon, to take her Borzois dogs for a walk. She goes through her dresses - all 1920's style flapper gowns - holding them one at a time, shaking them as if they are doing the shimmy. She picks one - in puce - puts it on, and, finding herself delighted, adds perfume, languishes on a chaise for a few minutes, then heads off for her walk.
PUCE MOMENT is a fragment from a larger work entitled PUCE WOMEN, which was never completed. (According to ANGER, “puce” is a 1920s fashion term for a type of purple material.)
The film is a study in glamour; years before ANDY WARHOL created his own underground movie “superstars”, ANGER did the same with the uncredited protagonist of this film.
Unlike the earlier FIREWORKS (1947), PUCE MOMENT is in colour, and features deep, rich hues.
The film also anticipates the work of CINDY SHERMAN with its seemingly candid, almost voyeuristic glimpses of a glamorous female figure. It would be interesting to find out how this “moment” fit in with the larger film that ANGER was not able to finish. Would the other “puce women” have been as glamorous as the one we see here?
Prod Co: Puck Film Productions. Dir: KENNETH ANGER. Wr: KENNETH ANGER. Phot: CURTIS HARRINGTON. Ed: KENNETH ANGER. Cast: YVONNE MARQUIS. 6 mins. Print courtesy of the National Film and Sound Archive.

• KUSTOM KAR KOMMANDOS,
(1965)
KENNETH ANGER's KUSTOM KAR KOMMANDOS is the "mirror image" of his 1964 tour-de-force, SCORPIO RISING. Whereas SCORPIO RISING was a no-holds-barred look at the tough and violent world of Brooklyn biker gangs, KUSTOM KAR KOMMANDOS is a pastel-colored fantasia, an homage to California hot rods and the men who customized them.
Perhaps even more overtly erotic than SCORPIO RISING ( - if such a thing could be possible - ), this very brief film depicts a man buffing his hot rod with some kind of giant oversized pink powder-puff, as the camera glides over every nook and cranny of the car, as well as the gentleman’s extremely tight, aquamarine pants. All of this is set against a hot-pink backdrop and accompanied by a breathy female rendition of the classic pop song “Dream Lover”.
The primary aesthetic inspiration for this intentionally kitschy film appears to have been the promotional films that industrial titans such as General Motors cranked out in the 1950s and 1960s to promote their new product lines. This is a very witty film that has lost none of its bite over the years. They certainly don’t make cars ( - or films - ) like this any more!
Prod Co: Puck Film Productions. Dir: KENNETH ANGER. Wr: KENNETH ANGER. Phot: KENNETH ANGER, Arnold Baskin. Ed: KENNETH ANGER. 3 mins. Print courtesy of the National Film and Sound Archive.

• THE FRONT,
[ TV SPOT ]
[ TV SPOT ]
(1976)

Yes, here it is - a "60 second" TV teaser for that great MARTIN RITT flick, THE FRONT!
A classic - better appreciated decades after its release - THE FRONT is a dark, stylish "satire" about a deadly serious subject - the HUAC blacklists.
WOODY ALLEN portrays Harold Prince, a somewhat naïve stooge enlisted by a trio of blacklisted television writers to "front" their work to the tv networks; ZERO MOSTEL ( - in a role based partly on his own true story - ), plays unemployed and blacklisted TV comedian Hecky Brown, who eventually commits suicide by jumping from a hotel room window.
Geez, what an ending this film has got - Prince telling the HUAC committee: "Fellas... I don't recognize the right of this committee to ask that kind of question. And furthermore, you can all go f@#k yourselves"! Damn pity that won't squeeze into TV commercial-sized clip!
Many of the actors in the film were actual blacklist victims. Walter Bernstein got a much-deserved Oscar™ nomination for Best Screenplay on this one. 1 min. RM

• A PATTERN OF PEOPLE:
DAVID BETTERIDGE
DAVID BETTERIDGE
(c. 1978?)

As soon as you say the words ISLAND RECORDS, the eyes of any true vinyl freak should immediately glaze over.
Here, masquerading under the guise of a (British Government) Ministry of Information ( - Central Office of Information (COI) - ) film, produced by the London Television Service, we have an installment in the 1970s “A Pattern of People”series, and a rare insight into the workings of a recording industry icon.
This doco is, in fact, a profile of David Betteridge, from Island Records - the label which crossed paths with, if not actually launched the careers of as diverse a group of musical legends as Keith & Enid, Derrick Morgan, Silver Stars Steel Band, Jimmy McGriff, Ernest Rangling, Inez & Chrlie Foxx, Jackie Edwards, The Soul Sisters, Huey 'Piano' Smith, Elmore James, Larry Williams, The Bluesbusters, Lee Dorsey, Billy Preston, The Righteous Brothers, John Foster, Robert Parker, Wynder K. Frogg, Pakistani Soul Session, Ray Barretto, Bob & Earl, John Martyn, Traffic, Jimmy Cliff, Art, Joyce Bond, The Spencer Davis Group, The Merrymen, Jethro Tull, Nirvana, Spooky Tooth, Tramline, Free, Fairport Convention, Bama Winds, The White Noise, Clouds, Blodwyn Pig, Nick Drake, Dr. Strangely Strange, Mott The Hoople, Quintessence, King Crimson, John & Beverley Martyn, Renaissanse, Cat Stevens, Bronco, Fotheringay, McDonald & Giles, If, Alan Bown, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Amazing Blondel, The Incredible String Band, Uriah Heep, Mike Heron, Mick Abrahams, Mountain, Heads Hands & Feet, Paladin, Tir Na Nog, Juicy Lucy, Procol Harum, Luther Grosvenor, Mike Harrison, Colosseum, Tony Hazzard, Sutherland Brothers Band, Kossoff Kirke Tetsu Rabbit, Michael McGear, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Richard Thompson, Smith-Perkins-Smith, Roxy Music, Dave Mason, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, Sandy Denny,Tempest, Ken Hensley, Stomu Yamash'ta, Sharks, Rabbit, McGuinness Flint, Bryan Ferry, Bob Dylan, Kevin Ayers, Paul Kossoff, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Eno, Sparks, Andy MacKay, Bad Company, Bob Marley, Jade Warrior, John Cale, Ronnie Lane, Jim Capaldi, Colosseum, Robert Palmer, Automatic Man, Illusion, Rough Diamond, Kwaku Baah & Ganoua, Ian Gillan Band, Robin Williams, Henry Wolff & Nancy Hennings, Ashley Hutchings, John Surman, Grimms, Sun Treader, Fripp & Eno, Quiet Sun, The Fania All Stars, and, whew, the Albion Country Band.
Betteridge discusses his philosophy of the pop song, and outlines his commitment and enthusiasm for the Island Records enterprise at the height of the 1970s, with background glimpses of the talent line-up, including a brief interview with Stomu Yamash'ta (referred to as "Stanley"), but also, notably, Ronald and Russell Mael’s blockbuster glam band, Sparks!
British Government Ministry of Information ( - Central Office Of Information (COI) - ) films were distributed internationally, in particular to the Commonwealth, Dominions and Colonial countries, informing people of developments back in Old Blighty. The COI films constitute a kaleidoscope of social, historical, industrial, geographical and scientific documentation, offering tremendous insight into the last half of the twentieth century. 25 mins. • HORROR OF DRACULA,

It is no idle assertion that this is the greatest Hammer horror film ever made, starring the two mainstays of British Horror, CHRISTOPHER LEE and PETER CUSHING.
TERENCE FISHER ( - unquestionably the best Hammer director) runs the show with buckets of style, and JAMES BERNARD produced a score that would be used in variations by many Hammer films over the subsequent years. (For any musicians out there, the chord Bernard uses to signal Dracula's presence is an augmented chord.)
CHRISTOPHER LEE is simply magnificent as Count Dracula. BELA LUGOSI may have first starred in the role, but LEE is vastly superior in virtually every respect: He has more screen presence ( - helped by being 6' 5"), is better looking, and, most crucially, unlike LUGOSI, he can act, in the modern idiom, that is.
As Van Helsing, PETER CUSHING is mesmerising. Whether he is carrying out a blood transfusion, or dictating into an early phonograph recorder, the script is delivered with absolute conviction. I always end up believing Vampires really exist after watching this film!
The conclusion of the film is perhaps the single greatest moment in the entire history of Hammer horror! While the special effects may, in some respects, look dated now, the realization of the ending is just a great piece of film making.
This was a specifically British entry into Vampire folklore. Pairing LEE and CUSHING for the first time, LEE makes a striking and spirited debut as the Count representing the power of his class, his aristocractic bearing contrasting with his bestial hiss.
In Hammer's HORROR OF DRACULA, there was a new emphasis on the Vampire's sexuality - his female victims respond eagerly and with enthusiasm. The actions of the representatives of Christian morality are sadistically brutal in their assaults upon the Vampire's sexually aroused victims. Based on the novel by BRAM STOKER. Also known as: DRACULA (UK).
Prod Co: HAMMER FILM PRODUCTION. Exec Prod: Michael Carreras. Prod: Anthony Hinds. Assoc. Prod: Anthony Nelson Keys. Dir: TERENCE FISHER. Wr: Jimmy Sangster. Phot: Jack Asher. Mus: JAMES BERNARD. Cast: PETER CUSHING, MICHAEL GOUGH, MELISSA STRIBLING, CHRISTOPHER LEE, MILES MALLESON. 81 mins. Print courtesy of the National Film and Sound Archive.
