• THE FLYING NUN:
WITH LOVE FROM IRVING
(1967),
In this 10th episdode from Season 1 of THE FLYING NUN, while sailing through the air one fine morning, Sister Bertrille discovers she has company - a pelican has fallen in love with her and refuses to leave her side!
This is dilemma enough, but things get even worse when visiting priest Father Sweeney (HAROLD GOULD), a man who brooks no nonsense or dereliction of protocol from anyone, spots the persistent pelican, so it takes some clever thinking by the nuns to heal Irving’s aching heart and get him flying straight again.
THE FLYING NUN was a one of the many fantasy sitcoms on the telly in the 1960s. It was about (the fictional) Elsie Enthrington, a surfer-girl (Sally Field, the star of the show began her career as the impossibly perky tv GIDGET, in 1965), who then becomes a nun. The influence of the at-the-time-current Maria Von Trapp role from THE SOUND OF MUSIC is clear.
Now named Sister Bertrille, the young novice discovered that she had the ability to fly. She only weighed 90 pounds, and, when the wind was right, she could put on her cornette and fly.
In 1967, she arrived at the Convent San Tanco in San Juan , Puerto Rico . The Reverend Mother who ran the
place was a strict conservative, who usually had to put up with Bertrille's mishaps. Mother Superior, Reverend Mother Plaseato (Madeleine Sherwood) was not amused by Sister Bertrille's antics of flight, but her pleasant nature and her sincere desire to do good works nonetheless endeared her to everyone.
Sister Jaqueline, a wise nun with a sense of humour became Sister Bertrille's friend (Sister Jaqueline also narrated the show). The sister was also friends with Sister Sixto, a Puerto Rican nun, who was struggling with her English language, and Sister Ana, another younger nun.

She had a special relationship with Carlos Ramirez, the local playboy who owned the Carlos-a-Go-Go discotèque.
Carlos was usually interrupted by Sister Bertrille right in the middle of a hot date, and, because of this, he dreaded her visits. Deep down, though, Carlos was a great friend to the airborne novice.
For three years, THE FLYING NUN was a favourite among kids and adults, and was even praised by real-life Catholic nuns for its portrayal of convent life (without the flying, of course!) Dir: E.W. Swackhamer. Wr: Dorothy Cooper Foote. Sally Field (Sister Bertrille, flying nun); Madeleine Sherwood (Reverend Mother Superior Plaseato); Marge Redmond (Sister Jacqueline); ALEJANDRO REY (Carlos Ramirez) Guest Stars: Nate Esformes (Dr. Leonard); HAROLD GOULD (Father Sweeney); Serena Sande (Sister Marguerita). 25 mins. • SUPERMAN: #1
"THE MAD SCIENTIST"
(1941),
Everyone knows that Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound, so it's not too surprising to discover that the
Man of Steel also quickly made the leap from comic books to the silver screen. (And, would you believe, this is the film-series is where Superman "learned" to fly! Prior to this, he was only able to "leap tall buildings in a single bound". - It was deemed that leaping would not look "right" on film. And even when Superman does fly, it looks as if he needs to make a jumping start, rather than just "taking off", as it were, effortlessly!)
Only three years after his Action Comics debut in 1938, the Last Son of Krypton starred in the first of 17! ( - count 'em!) ground-breaking cartoons, created by MAX and DAVE FLEISCHER.
The initial 1941 adventure - which we have here tonight - wherein the Man of Steel battles a mad scientist threatening to destroy Metropolis with an (absurdly phallic, I kid-you-not!) "Electrothanasia-Ray" - introduces both Superman's origin and the now-famous "faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound" prologue.
The Fleischers were reluctant to take on this assignment because it was going to require much more realistic designs and animation than those to which they had previously been used.
They tried to discourage the commissioning studio (Paramount Pictures) by stating they would need a budget of around $100,000 per short - four times the budget of an average WALT DISNEY cartoon, ( - which at the time had the highest budgets of all in the animation business!). To their shock, the Paramount executives agreed to the amount, which made the Superman series - in adjusted dollars - the biggest-budgeted animation series in film history!
Characteristic of nearly every story in the series, this opening installment also features intrepid Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, whose reckless exploits generally serve as the catalyst for each tale's requisite
rescue.
Although their names are perhaps not as instantly recognizable as WALT DISNEY, MAX and DAVE FLEISCHER continue to inspire present-day animators, with traces of their inimitable style, evident in productions ranging from BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, or SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW (2004) to the images of such Japanese animé masters as OSAMU TEZUKA (ASTRO BOY) and HAYAO MIYAZAKI (SPIRITED AWAY).
The depth of field, fluidity of movement, consummate use of colour and superlative cinematic quality remains astonishing and, even with today's state-of-the-art animation techniques,
rarely matched. Dir: Dave Fleischer. Wr: Seymour Kneitel; JOE SHUSTER & JERRY SIEGEL – characters. Vocal Talent: Joan Alexander (Lois Lane), JACKSON BECK (Perry White / Narrator), BUD COLLYER (Clark Kent / Superman), Jack Mercer (The Mad Scientist), Julian Noa (Perry White). 10 mins. RM

"QUICKIE THEATRE" returns, with:
• A CHRISTMAS CAROL
(1951),
Of all the versions set to film of Dickens' classic Yuletide tale, none seems more fondly remembered than this here 1951 effort, starring the incomparable eccentric, ALASTAIR SIM, as the miserly, ill-tempered Ebeneezer Scrooge. The general consensus, echoing down through the decades, has been that SIM was, and will always be the best Scrooge ever, and for all time. Now, that's saying something!
Here, Mr. Eugene Castle, of Castle Films quickie digests fame, has given us just enough of this fine holiday fare to prompt us all to track down the the full version on cable tv, DVD or
videotape, once we are fully strutted with plum pudding, turkey and all other things Christmas. Dir: Brian Desmond Hurst. Wr: Charles Dickens (novel A Christmas Carol), Noel Langley (adaptation and screenplay); Cast: ALASTAIR SIM (Ebenezer Scrooge), MERVYN JOHNS (Bob Cratchit), HERMIONE BADDELEY (Mrs. Cratchit), MICHAEL HORDERN (Jacob Marley / Marley's Ghost), GEORGE COLE (Young Ebenezer Scrooge), Francis De Wolff (Spirit of Christmas Present), Glyn Dearman (Tiny Tim), Michael Dolan (Spirit of Christmas Past), C. Konarski (Spirit of Christmas Yet To Come), PETER BULL (First Businessman, Narrator). 8 mins. RM

• CAPTAIN MEPHISTO AND
THE TRANSFORMATION MACHINE [trailer]
THE TRANSFORMATION MACHINE [trailer]
(1966),
Oooooh! Look wot we got here - it's the trailer for the movie-version cut-down of the fab old Republic Pictures serial MANHUNT OF MYSTERY ISLAND (1945), starring the stoopendous ROY BARCROFT (who you may also recall as the PURPLE MONSTER from another ol' Republic serial, aptly titled THE PURPLE MONSTER STRIKES. Only problem there was that he was neither purple - as far as we could tell - nor was he a monster... except in his heart!) Remembered also for his work in Western serials, Barcroft really puts in the best performance of his career as the mysterious Captain Mephisto here. But, sheesh, the real star of the show is the kinky electric chair that the old
boy straps himself into in order to undergo the transformation into the pirate villian! Arrgh! 2 mins. RM
followed by:
•DON'S PARTY
(1976)
OK. Splodge! is doing the celebrating this way – tonight it’s David Williamson's satire of university-educated upwardly-mobile (in the main) ALP supporters, set in a suburb on Sydney's North Shore on the night of the 1969 Federal Election ( - in the play, it was set in an outer suburb of Melbourne!). The satire achieves its bite through a sense of what passes for naturalism. The essential ockerism of the males becomes more apparent as the party degenerates and the alcohol takes over. The critical focus sharpens and the humour becomes more cynical. (Based on the play of the same name by David Williamson.) Prod. Co: Double Head Productions/Australian Film Commission. Prod: PHILLIP ADAMS. Dir: Bruce Beresford. Scr: David Williamson. Phot: Don McAlpine. Cast: RAY BARRETT, Clare Binney, Pat
Bishop, JEANIE DRYNAN, JOHN HARGREAVES, Harold Hopkins, GRAHAM KENNEDY, GRAEME BLUNDELL. 90 mins. Courtesy of Screensound.
