TONIGHT! -
WAKE IN FUN !!!
• PADDINGTON LACE
(1971),
A lighthearted docu-drama set in Paddington, Sydney, suggesting the character of one of the city's oldest districts and the lifestyle of some typical residents.
Paddington is one of Sydney's oldest suburbs, which has developed somewhat along the lines of New York's Greenwich Village or London's Chelsea, and became a kind of Sydney artists' colony.
This is a fully dramatised film, which captures the area's "essence", not only through striking visuals of the old-Sydney architecture, but by re-enacting the mood and lifestyle of some of its bohemian inhabitants. AFI Award-winner. Prod Co: Australian Commonwealth Film Unit. Prod: David Bairstow, Dir: Chris Mccullough. Scr: JOAN LONG ( Prod / Wr: THE PICTURE SHOW MAN [1977] ). Phot: Bruce Hillyard. Eds: Tom Foley, Rod Adamson. Mus: RORY O'DONOGHUE, GRAHAM BOND. Sd: Julian Ellingworth, Gordon Wraxall. Cast: Janne Wesley, Ross Thompson (Jon), Janne Wesly (Mari), Ron Blanchard (Nick). 24 mins. • THE CISCO KID
(1950),

![[The Cisco Kid and Pancho]](http://www.brocku.ca/greatbooks/img_ciscopancho.jpg)
BYRON FOULGER
Johnny ( - Where's the tinnie? )
Episode 1:1 - BOOMERANG. The Cisco Kid and his trusty side-kick, Pancho, find themselves wanted by the law after a prominent real-estate broker hires two gunmen to impersonate them and rob the Mesa Verde bank.
- Incidentally, in O. Henry (William Sydney Porter)'s story, THE CABALLERO'S WAY, the Cisco Kid was a dangerous desperado! Later, on radio - voiced by the late, great JACKSON BECK - and on television, Cisco became the heroic "Robin Hood of the Old West", with an amiable sidekick, named Pancho, played by the great LEO CARRILLO.
The CISCO KID television series originally ran from 1950-1956, in colour - although we, in the antipodes, remember only seeing it on the black and white telly. 156 episodes were made. Duncan Renaldo starred as the valiant Cisco, and veteran character actor, Leo Carrillo, portrayed his, er, happy-go-lucky compadre, Pancho. Writer: J. Benton Cheney. Director: Derwin Abrahams. Starring: LEO
CARRILLO (Pancho), DUNCAN RENALDO (Cisco). Guest Stars: George De Normand (Deputy), Edmund Cobb (Martin) , David Sharpe (Fake Cisco), Lee Phelps (Sheriff), Stephen Chase (Jim Brent), BYRON FOULGER (Mr. Harley), Jane Adams (Miss Harley). 25 mins. RM
PLUS!
"QUICKIE THEATRE" returns, with:
• LITTLE EGYPT
(1951),
Castle Films digest about the famous exotic dancer from the 1890 World's Fair. Dir: Frederick De Cordova. Starring Mark Stevens, and Rhonda Fleming - as Izora. 7 mins. RM
AND!
A quick Victoria Bitter TV commercial from the 1960s - voiceover by the great JOHN MELLION!
VB was introduced in the mid 1960s with an innovative television advertising campaign featuring an orchestral score, images of working-class Australians at work and play, and a voice-over by notable Aussie actor JOHN MELLION. The campaign is still used to this day.
"You can get it rollin’, you can get it goalin’, you can get it feedin’ a fire. A hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer, and the best cold beer is Vic – Vic Bitter.
It can come at any time, dishin’ up chow, or showin’ ‘em how, shearin' a sheep or milkin' a cow. Matter of fact I got it now. Vic Bitter."

•SUNSTRUCK

(1972)
Poster Caption: He's playing a Pommy teacher landed in the promised land with a bunch of cheeky kids, a fractured love affair and the Kookaburra Springs sexpot . . . you have to LAUGH!
British Goon, HARRY SECOMBE, plays Stanley, a Welsh schoolteacher who follows his long-held dream to head Down Under in search of sun, surf and girls after his back-home romance turns sour.
On his arrival at the one-horse town of Kookaburra Springs, in the blazing outback - where he has been employed to run the local school - reality and fantasy clash head on.
Yearning for those good old days, when he was a choral director back home, Stanley organizes his Aussie students into a children's choir.
The pub is the centre of town, and all business, talk and public discussion goes on there, especially back in the 1960s. And so it goes that all business about the town was conducted there. If you were a "wowser" and didn't drink, you were on the outer. Stanley soon learns about "having a beer", and is subsequently accepted into the community.
Along the way, he finds lasting happiness with down-to-earth local woman, Shirley (MAGGIE FITZGIBBON).
SUNSTRUCK was a popular little family comedy that was forged in the early '70s and saw the "THEY'RE A WEIRD MOB (1966) formula" applied again with appreciable results.
Primarily a farce about tubby Welsh schoolteacher HARRY SECOMBE immigrating to Oz for sun and fun, but being marooned in the blazing outback instead, it also may have been a positive local conservative establishment response to the bitter and cruel TED KOTCHEFF movie WAKE IN FRIGHT ( aka OUTBACK [US] (1971) ), or maybe the superb, but bleak, NICHOLAS ROEG drama WALKABOUT (1971), both produced in the two years prior.
Best described as an
inoffensive “fish-out-of-water” comedy, the film plays it for laughs, pathos, romance and light drama. Filmed in and around Parkes, NSW, the cast is uniformly good and lends great support to SECOMBE, with his natural affability.
Prod Co: Immigrant Productions; Prod: Jimmy Grafton, Jack Neary. Dir: James Gilbert. Wr: Stan Mars. Mus: Peter Knight. Phot: Brian West. Ed: Anthony Buckley. Makeup: JOSÉ PÉREZ. Cast: HARRY SECOMBE (Stanley Evans), MAGGIE FITZGIBBON (Shirley Marshall), JOHN MEILLON (Mick
Cassidy), Dennis Jordan (Steve Cassidy), DAWN LAKE (Sal Cassidy), PETER WHITTLE (Pete Marshall), BOBBY LIMB (Bill), Norm Erskine (Norm), Jack Allen (Banjo), Roger Cox (Ben), Tommy Mack (Gunboat), John Armstrong, Benita Collings (PLAY SCHOOL), Stuart Wagstaff, Jeff Ashby, Charles McCallum, Lorna Wilde, DEREK NIMMO, Donald Houston. 91 mins.
