THE BLUE DANUBE

A conductor, in silhouette against sheet music, leads the title tune, which dissolves into a series of placid landscapes. As the music picks up, we see a water wheel, then a dancing fairy emerges from a whirlpool and begins singing, to the delight of small woodland creatures. The birds awaken sleeping cherubs, who begin their work of harvesting all things blue and adding them to the river. The birds even do their part, harvesting the color blue from the rainbow. Everyone tugs to open a floodgate and unleash the cerulean waters. A swan, festively decorated, leads a gondola of sorts lit by fireflies.

For, arguably, the finest animated cartoon in TechniColor
ever made, the screenplay and syncopation to Johann Strauss' classic "Blue Danube Waltz" are absolutely flawless. Clever plot twists are so well done that the unknowing viewer might believe that the music was written later than the plot to match it! It is truly unfortunate that Hollywood no longer produces art at this level of excellence. Prod Co: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Prod: Fred Quimby. Dir: Hugh Harman. 7 mins. RM

COURAGEOUS CAT & MINUTE MOUSE:

How could we ever  forget!?  From the fertile psyche  of the creator of Batman - BOB KANE - came this extraordinary tv cartoon series! The parody was very obvious. Courageous Cat, based in the Cat Cave, received his orders from the Police Chief of Empire City, who happened to be a dog. The crime-fighting duo travelled around in the Catmobile and carried around a multi-purpose Catgun. The Catgun fired just about everything - except bullets. The duo's foes included Rodney Rodent, Shoo Shoo Fly, Professor Shaggy Dog, The Black Cat, Harry Gorilla, Iron Shark, Professor Noodle Stroodle and The Frog, a cigar-chomping amphibian who spoke in the gangster style of EDWARD G. ROBINSON, nyarrr! The character voices are by - although we think it sure sounds like Michael Jackson! - voice artist Bob McFadden (COOL McCOOL, and many other characters). And, WOW! what a kick-ass opening title sequence it had! That jazzy theme music is burnt into the Splodge! brain for e-ternity! In this episode, The Frog plans a jail break. 5 mins. RM

THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN:
  DISAPPEARING LOIS,
     (1957)

"And this is the chance I've always dreamed of... the chance to be a gun moll. Now you wouldn't shatter my hopes, would you?"
Lois to Lefty in "Disappearing Lois."

In this 5th Season colour episode (#85) from 1957, Lois Lane disguises herself as a maid in order to get an interview with a gangster. He orders his henchman, "Lefty", played by the fabulous BEN WELDON (1901 - 1997), to dispose of her and Jimmy. Wr: David Chantler, Peggy Chantler Dick. Dir: Harry Gerstad. Cast: JACK LARSON (Jimmy Olson),  ROBERT SHAYNE (Inspector Bill Henderson),
NOEL NEILL ( Lois Lane (18/9/'53) ),  GEORGE REEVES (Clark Kent/Superman),  Phil Tead ( Professor J.J. Pepperwinkle [21/4/'56] ),  JOHN HAMILTON (Perry White),   BEN WELDON (Lefty), Yvonne White (Sara Green),  MILTON FROME (Garrett). 25 mins. RM

MARVEL SUPERHEROES: IRON MAN
    - (CLOSING & OPENING CREDITS SEQUENCES),
     (1966)

Credit sequences from the classic MARVEL SUPER-HEROES animated cartoon series, IRON MAN, featuring tortured dipso electronics magnate, TONY STARK, inventor of the (ever-handy) "Repulser Ray" and the flying, transistorized armoured suit - shades of Republic Pictures' serial Rocket Man! The theme song, we speculate, was recorded by MARILYN MONROE,( who came out of retirement especially to do the vocals! - That is sure one high-pitched voice!)

MARVEL SUPER-HEROES was an animated television series produced in 1967 by Grantray-Lawrence Animation, featuring adaptations of several comic books by Marvel Comics. The characters featured included: Captain America; The Incredible Hulk; Iron Man; (The Mighty) Thor, and (Prince) Namor, the "Sub-Mariner".

Grantray-Lawrence Animation was a Canadian animation studio active from 1954 to 1967, founded by Grant Simmons, Ray Patterson, and Robert Lawrence.

This animation company produced numerous low budget television animation productions until it went bankrupt in 1967.

Its output included: MAX THE 2000-YEAR-OLD MOUSE, THE MARVEL SUPER-HEROES SHOW, and SPIDER-MAN. This latter has proven by far to be the most durable, with its theme song becoming a most popular standard, frequently covered (and parodied!).

In addition, given its country of origin, the Canadian content-broadcasting regulations ensured the company's product would be aired almost continually in some form on Canadian television, and, it seems, throughout the, erm, British Commonwealth. Owing to the short production time available before the new season, the animation was produced by Xerography (photo-copying). The animation consisted of images taken directly from the comic books in question and manipulated to minimize as much animation as it was possible to.

Animation fans condemned the production as shoddy and cut rate, while others defended it by noting that the series used the original stories largely in their entirity.

We are informed that there is an IRON MAN feature film currently in the offing, and who better have they cast to play the ol' substance abusing tin man than Robert Downey Jr! Prod Co: Grantray-Lawrence. 2 mins. RM

ROCKET 'N' ROLL,
     (1953)

Yes, here's the Quickie Theatre Reduced Cinema version of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO GO TO MARS (1953), courtesy of our very good friends at Castle Films!

Lester (BUD ABBOTT) and Orville (LOU COSTELLO) accidentally launch a rocket which is intended to fly to Mars. Instead, it goes to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. They are then forced by bank robber Mugsy, and his pal Harry (Jack Kruschen and Horace McMahon), to fly to Venus, where they find a civilization populated entirely by beautiful women - men having been banished!

While working at a missile base, Lester and Orville  inadvertently launch a rocket ship with themselves aboard. After a wild ride around New York City (the Statue of Liberty ducks when the rocket heads her way), Bud and Lou land in the outskirts of New Orleans. The boys are convinced that they've reached Mars, and their faith in this supposition is affirmed when they come across several strangely costumed "creatures" (actually revellers at the Mardi Gras!).

Meanwhile,  the bank robbers stow away on A&C's rocketship. When Bud and Lou return, the crooks force them to make a quick getaway into outer space. After several days of weightlessness, the four space travellers land on Venus, a planet populated by the gorgeous winners of the Miss Universe contest (including ANITA EKBERG). Venusian Queen MARI BLANCHARD falls in love with Costello, only to order him and his companions to return to Earth when Lou proves to be unfaithful.

Reportedly, this bizarre melange of SciFi and slapstick was based on a story by CHARLES BEAUMONT, who received no screen credit ( - it's worth noting that Beaumont's later QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE (1958) boasts a remarkably similar plotline). And we’d SWEAR that we saw Hugh Beaumont (Ward Cleaver, Hugh Beaumont's character from LEAVE IT TO BEAVER (1957) ) at the start of the reel – even though we can’t find him credited ANYWHERE!

Long considered the team's worst film, ABBOTT AND COSTELLO GO TO MARS ("and about time!" quipped the New York Times' TV-movie reviewer) is actually  rather likeable, in its own incoherent way, and even more so, in this quickie 9 minute version! Prod Co: Universal Pictures. Dir: Charles Lamont. Wr: D. D. Beauchamp (story and screenplay);  Howard Christie (story); John Grant (screenplay). Cast: BUD ABBOTT, LOU COSTELLO, MARI BLANCHARD, ANITA EKBERG, HARRY SHEARER (uncredited). 9 mins. RM

You may better recall this hilarious western parody, starring our favourite Rat Packers DEAN MARTIN and JOEY BISHOP, as TEXAS ACROSS THE RIVER (1966), but, since you've been good, we've arranged to present the condensed version for you here. Hardly high-brow comedy, but in my opinion, still one of the funniest movies ever made! Dir: Michael Gordon. Wr: Wells Root, Ben Starr, Harold Greene, John Gay. Mus: FRANK DE VOL, JIMMY VAN HEUSEN. Phot: RUSSELL METTY. Ed: Gene Milford. Cast: DEAN MARTIN (Sam Hollis); ALAIN DELON (Don Andrea); JOEY BISHOP (Kronk); ROY BARCROFT (Republic Pictures' serial "heavy"), Peter Graves; Rosemary Forsyth (Phoebe); Tina Aumont (Lonetta). 9 mins. REEFER MADNESS,

Play faster... faster!!!

“The motion picture you are about to witness may startle you…”

Although you can hunt this flick down in the dvd bargain bins for a buck or two, we find it a rather tragic prospect for the solitary viewer to hole up in front of the TV in order to experience this picture. It would seem that the days of the cult late-night screenings are over, as the tidal wave of Advanced capitalism's "privatised future" inundates us. Ideally, REEFER MADNESS is a film to be experienced in a congregation of like-minded folk.

A school principal (Joseph Forte) warns parents against the evil influence of marihuana by telling the story of an upstanding teen named Bill (Kenneth Craig) whose life went downhill after he was led into a life of wild partying by drug dealers Mae (Thelma White) and Jack (Carleton Young).

This cult exploitation film - with more alternate titles than you can count on one hand: REEFER MADNESS / TELL YOUR CHILDREN / THE BURNING QUESTION / DOPE ADDICT / DOPED YOUTH / LOVE MADNESS - was clearly “made by people who obviously knew nothing about their subject”, and “reinforces every falsehood you’ve ever heard about marijuana: that you become immediately addicted, that it is violence-inducing, that it’s as bad as heroin, [and] that it ends in one’s ‘inevitable insanity’.”
REEFER MADNESS possesses a handful of unintentionally hilarious moments — such as young addict Ralph (DAVE O'BRIEN) laughing maniacally, or characters reacting to cannabis as though it’s the latest form of speed. While REEFER MADNESS is undeniably a “terribly made, sensationalized, preposterous film”, it remains “the ultimate camp film”, and is required viewing for anyone seriously interested in the history of exploitation cinema. Prod: George A. Hirliman. Dir: Louis J. Gasnier. Wr: Lawrence Meade; Arthur Hoerl (scr); Paul Franklin (addtnl dial.). Phot: Jack Greenhalgh . Cast: Dorothy Short (Mary Lane) Kenneth Craig (Bill Harper); Lillian Miles    ( Blanche); DAVE O'BRIEN    (Ralph Wiley); Thelma White (Mae Colman);  Carleton Young (Jack Perry);  Warren McCollum (Jimmy Lane);  Patricia Royale    (Agnes (as Pat Royale); Josef Forte    (Dr. Alfred Carroll);  Harry Harvey Jr. (Junior Harper). 66 mins. RM
