COMEDY OVERLOAD!!!

THE ABBOTT & COSTELLO SHOW:
  THE CHARITY BAZAAR
     (1952),

From Season One of The Abbott and Costello Show, Bud and Lou participate in Hillary (Brooke)'s charity bazaar, raising money with the lemon routine "shell game." Lou blows his money at the kissing booth.  They do the 'buzzing the bee' routine (but the background to it makes little sense, as it did when they did it in IN THE NAVY (1941). Abbott cajoles Lou into joining the club on the understanding that loads of beautiful girls will 'initiate him'. Instead, Abbott starts walking around him and the girls stand there motionless (aside from their suppressed laughing).   Lou and Stinky play 'Sherrif' on the street.

At the end, on stage, Bud does his toast to the camera - "May you all live as long as you want... and never want as long as you live!"

JERRY SEINFELD has said that The Abbott and Costello Show inspired his own sitcom. "That show was definitely the most important ancestor of this show," the comedian revealed. The boys' classic TV series debuted in December 1952, and lasted two seasons (a total of 52 episodes), although Season One was unquestionably the better of the two . Bud and Lou play themselves as unemployed actors, down on their luck and perpetually six months behind on their rent at Sid Fields' spartan rooming house. (The rent is a steep $7 per week.) Their neighbours include the elegant Brooke, who sometimes fancies Costello; the belligerent Mike the Cop (Gordon Jones), whose testiness with Lou may stem from his own desire for Hillary; the infantile "Stinky" (soon-to-be Stooge, Joe Besser), a grown man inexplicably dressed like a child; and Mr. Bacciagalupe (Joe Kirk, Lou's real-life brother-in-law), an immigrant who seems to own several businesses. Sid Fields also played a host of minor characters who were all somehow related to the landlord.

Exec. P: Pat Costello; Prod/Dir: Jean Yearbrough; Wr: Eddie Forman; Mus: Raoul Kraushaar; Prod Sup: Clarence Eurist; Phot: George Robinson; Ed: Otho Lovering (Ed. STAGECOACH [1939] ). 25 mins. RM

BLOTTO
  (1930),
An evening of quiet domestic bliss near the old fireside with Mrs Laurel (Anita Garvin) seated at a bridge table playing solitaire as her husband (Stan Laurel) tries to read a newspaper. However, Stan decides he needs a break from this domestic bliss and it falls to his dear friend Ollie (Oliver Hardy) to provide the excuse for his escape. They steal a bottle of booze from Laurel's wife and head off for a wild old time at the Rainbow Club only to be later thwarted by one very angry wife in the form of Mrs Laurel. A Laurel and Hardy classic even if the plot is somewhat thin.  Prod Co: Hal Roach Studios. Prod: Hal Roach. Dir: James Parrott.

plus:

QUICKIE THEATRE returns, with

a small tribute to Melbourne's own SNUB POLLARD, with excerpts from IT'S A GIFT (1923). ( - Anybody care to contribute to a fund for a plaque, nay, a statue!, to be erected at Snub's birthplace - JUST BEHIND THE OLD MELBOURNE MOTOR INN!!??!! )

followed by:

THE BIG STORE
   (1941)

Groucho is attorney Wolf J. Flywheel; Harpo is his sidekick, Wacky, and Chico is Ravelli, the bodyguard, in this 1941 MGM release.

Groucho investigates the shady dealings of a crooked Department Store owner.

This was the last of the nine films in which MARGARET DUMONT would appear with the Marxes, and the one which contains THE most hilarious roller-skating sequence on film since Chaplin!

WOLF: Martha, dear, there are many bonds that will hold us together through eternity.

MARTHA: Really, Wolf? What are they?

WOLF: Your Government Bonds, your Savings Bonds, your Liberty bonds.

The film gets a glossy lift from MGM production values, obvious in the sets and costumes. Harpo has one of his best harp routines, and there's a good set-piece involving mechanically-automated beds that disappear into the wall with Henry Armetta's brood of children.

The closing number is Tony Martin's "Tenement Symphony" which he does with professional skill, joined by Harpo and Chico, orchestra and chorus. But it's the big roller-skating chase through the department store that stays in the memory long after seeing the film. It's a wacky highlight of the film, and watch it for some exceptionally good stunt work.

Minor programme changes may occur due to unforseen circumstances.
Feature runs last; shorts order may vary from listing.
