I have but a few items obtained from my
Grandfather who served with C Troop 1st Cavalry Regt. in the
Philippines. Along with a few photos are the following
cartridges:
1) A 30/40 Krag ball round
2) A 30/40 Krag
blank
3) A 45/70 Rifle round
4) A 45/70 Carbine
round
5) A 43 Remington rolling block round
6) A 7 M/M
Mauser round
7) An 11 M/M Mauser (sometimes refered
to as 43 Mauser these days) round
I realize that
the first 6 are all cartridges common to the Span/Am
War era and the United States envolvement in the
Philippines. But I have never read anything to suggest the use
of M1871 or M1871/84 Mauser by any of the enemy
combatants. I can't imagine him having this included in this
collection had he not encountered them in the Philippines.
The M1871 type rifle was certainly a secondary weapon
for Germany at this time, being replaced by the M1888
and even the newly adopted M1898, so maybe there
might have been a few on the surplus market that found
their way to the Philippines. Does anyone
know?

Regards,
Steve
