Re: [Spanish American War Reenactors] Spanish Unit Re-Awakes, (or is trying to!)

Hello CJS,
The Spanish colonial tropical uniform is the most difficult part
of the impression to obtain, especailly if you don't have any
sewing skills. Step one of course is locating the correct material
(or as close as you can get). I finally found a fabric that wasn't
the "pillow ticking", after searching and searching every fabric
store in my city. I found a material with the blue & white pin stripes
close enough to pass off as the rayadillo. The 'pattern' I used from
a very helpful gentleman named Ted Stahr, I believe he was with the
4th Battalion Talavera Peninsula Regt. a Spanish unit based out in
California.
He sent me pictures of two types of tunics the Spanish used and I used
the Type I tunic because I thought it would be easier for the local
seamstress I was using to make (a Civil War reenacting gal). Basically to
make
a long story short....the uniform is up to you to make yourself. As fas as I
know nobody reproduces them. For the most part these garments would have
been cottage industry produced with many items being made locally as items
wore out. I can send you a fabric swatch to show you what material I used
and a photocopy of the two types of coats used commonly in Cuba and Puerto
Rico
if that would be a help.
Patrick Hubble, 1st Provisional Battalion.
(where do you live by the way, I have already had 2 other gentleman contact
myself since posting the webpage, do you live on the east coast?)
