Charlie:
does the badge have crossed rifles, canons, or sabers? This would indicate
Infantry, artillery, or cav.
Regular US regiments all had for example C company, 9th Regt US Regulars
would have a cap badge that had crossed Trapdoor rifles and a number 9 above
the point where the rifles cross, and a letter C just below it. This was
standard the regiment number above, and the company below.
