Patrick;
Are you one of the Olympia Boys? Say hello to Pete Tuttle for me. I worked
on the USS LCI 713 for a while,..was active in both the restoration and as a
living history crewmember.
I know its not 1890's vintage but big steel things that float have always
been a scource of facination to me regardless of the period they represent
Go ahead and put me down as the contact person for the 2nd Oregon for the
time being.
The email is bessel@...
As far as the technical issues are concerned I am concentrating pretty much
on the items that are either not reproduced for our purposes or which are
not adequately reproduced.
My focus as of today is on the 1889/1892 pattern shelter tent. where-as this
is essentially a type IIIb under Gaedes typology None-the-less, their are
some differences in the specifications. The placement of the "side buttons
and the use of "white metal" buttons on the latter do not coincide with the
tent described in GO 60 of December 1864.
I intend to make a pattern of the 1889 shelter tent and post it in the files
section of the list website and also to place a link to some online
instructions for making a IIIB in the links section.
I have access to ample material on surviving examples of the Civil War
counterparts but know of no extant examples of Spanish American War era
provenance.
Being able to inspect one would clear up several questions such as; what is
the extant of the machine stitching on them? How closely do they follow the
specifications?
more later.
Sam
