This writer is glad to announce that an important paper regarding the
Retraction of Dr. José Rizal is now published on the Web Site, "The
Life and Writings of Rizal."
The paper is entitled, "Rizal's Retraction: a Note on the Debate" by
Dr. Eugene A. Hessel and was originally a lecture given at Silliman
University on February 15, 1965. It was later reprinted in The
Silliman Journal (Vol.12, No. 2, April, May, June, 1965), pages 168-
183. Permission to reprint the article on the Web Site has been
given by Silliman University.
In the opinion of this writer, this is the best article on the
retraction available on the World Wide Web. Dr. Hessel presents all
the major arguments both for the viewpoint that Dr. Rizal repudiated
much of his writings prior to his death and also the major arguments
against that viewpoint with suggestions that might lead beyond the
present impasse. Sadly, to this writer's knowledge no such actions
have been undertaken to date (he is open to and would welcome
evidence to the contrary).
