This last weekend was a blast. Corp. Beaver and I made the trip to
Ft. Wayne in Detroit to TDY at the 1889/90 built guardhouse, complete
with holding cells; period tub, wash basin and toilet; authenic
wrought iron and wood slat bunks with cotton filled mattresses (14 in
all).
Four electric ceiling lights of the type seen in THEY CALLED IT HOME
made the evening hours that much more enjoyable; they even flickered
when turned down real low--gave it that 1890's gaslight look and
feeling. A potbelly stove (which we definitely didn't need) and an
original 1903 rifle rack set off the visual senario.
Really had that 'you are there' feeling!!!
Wish more of the unit could have made it.
There were representatives of IW, SpanAM, preWW1(1902 uniform), WW1,
post ww1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam era in attendance.
The honcho, Sgt. Munday, doing an impression of a 1926 2nd infantry
regiment noncom supplied the Saturday evening meal of fire cooked
hotdogs and liquid refreshments. Thanks, Sarge.
Regards,
Steve
