Ten Favorite Films...   Message List

I probably have what some would consider peculiar tastes, so I'll
make no defense for these being "best" films, just ones I enjoy.

10. Werewolves on Wheels (Outlaw Bikers vs Satanists in a plot that
makes almost no sense but has some wonderful scenes that look like
they were improvised. One scene even defies the logic of the rest of
the film but comes off a mysteriously as some of the better moments
from intellectually pretentious foreign films and provides an
enigmatic moment of wonder and beauty. And yes, one of the bikers
does turn into a werewolf and rides a bike just long enough to give
the title a bit of meaning. A muddled film, but a fascinating one.
9. Driller Killer (strange little film made on a showsting that
actually offers an economic reason for homicidal behavior. One critic
hit the nail on the head when he said words to the effect, "The
director seems to have deliberately made a film that would frustrate
the hell out of an audience that would be drawn to a film with a
title like "Driller Killer." Graphic in spots, and overall a
depressing little film with moments of off-the-wall black humor. An
acquired taste.)
8. Tarantula (Loved it when I was seven and I still love it, but for
different reason than when I was seven. One of Jack Arnold's best
films. Hell, you know it and you probably love it too, why even try
to describe it?)
7. The Haunting (of Hill House) (The black and white version that is
true to the spirit of Shirley Jackson's novel. Proves that things
unseen and suggested are far more disturbing and frightening than the
most expensive CGI effects or the most blatant gore effects. Well
thought out and well acted film that is still capable of terrifying
after many years.)
6. Wolfen (Possibly the most intelligent werewolf film ever made.
Wonderful and memorable performances all around. Literally explores
the idea of "Eat the Rich" with a wicked sense of humor.)
5. Freaks (Flawed and dated, but still compelling for its use of
real "human oddities." )
4. Godzilla (The first film of a long series) (Still the best of the
Japanese big ol' monster movies.)
3. Grim Prarie Tales (Unfortunately nearly impossible to find.)
(Wonderfully wickedly funny film about two western misfits telling
ghost stories around a campfire. A rare anthology film in which the
framing device is far more entertaining than three of the four short
stories. One of the short stories is probably the most frightening
piece of film ever created on the theme of racial prejudice. A
tragically neglected film that was just too damned odd to find an
audience.
2. Martin (Is he a vampire or is he just mad as a hatter? I still
haven't decided, but I'll watch this anytime I get a chance.)
1. King Kong (No great surprise I know, but this true classic holds
up through repeated viewings and I still find new elements every time
I watch it.)
