I find it really odd, Jon, that KK vs. G is the most-attended of all
the Godzilla films ever. Even to this day. It did get a lot of hype
on both sides of the Pacific, but in the end, it was one of the
weaker of the entries, at least effects-wise. The fight scenes don't
last nearly as long as they should, especially considering all the
build up we have to sit through beforehand. The story itself is
pretty good, for a Godzilla movie.
Many fans think this incarnation of Godzy is one of the best.
Personally, I hate it. He's way too fat. His head looks like it's
been squashed in a press. Plus, they got rid of the ears and the
fourth toe with this version, (and they didn't re-appear until the
1985 suit). His spines looked good, and I did appreciate an attempt
to give him a more reptilian appearance, but that's about it.
The worst part of this film, and this is universally acknowledged, is
that Kong suit. It is just beyond pathetic. Granted, this is 1961-2
we're talking about here, but still... It brings the whole level of
the film down several notches. Reasons why Mr. Tsubraya chose to
build Kong like this are still debated, although the most popular
version seems to be that he didn't want to scare the kids with a
menacing-looking beast, so he 'dumbed' it down (to say the very
least). In a way, he contributed to his own creation's eventual
downward spiral towards kiddie-pandering. *SIGH*
THE GOOD NEWS...
Rumors have recently been circulating that for the 2004, 50th
anniversary of Godzilla, Toho may finally pony up the dough and
secure the rights to the Kong character in order to produce a lavish
(by G-film standards) big-budget remake of KK vs. G! This is a dream
I think most fans of both have entertained at one time or another. I
know I have secretly fantasized about a rematch featuring a Godzilla
design similar to the 90's 'Heisei" version, and a Kong like the Rick
Baker/DeLaurentis suit. With a decent budget, some appropriate pre &
post production time, and a solid story, it could be a very
successful, all-around fun summer movie.
Other cool news is that Daiei films has announced a co-production
with Toho for... are ya ready??? Godzilla vs. Gamera. Really.
Considering how awesome the 90's Gammy flicks were, this could be an
amazing kaiju film.
Ah well... enough for now, kids.
