I can live with that. The American Godzilla isn't really part of the
canon, and I can see why G-fans would be hostile to it. For my part,
I thought they did a nice job of trying to deconstruct the Godzilla
story and retell it with a nod for somewhat greater logic (I know how
idiotic that sounds). The attempt to make Godzilla's behavior more
instinctive made sense, and denying him atomic breath was clearly
intended to make him seem more "real". They did set up that one scene
where fire seems to flow from his/her mouth as a nod to the original.
Essentially the American Godzilla comes from another place and
attempts to make Godzilla coherent for a new audience. The litte
Godzillas were clearly intended to evoke the Jurassic Park animals,
but they do successfully give the film both the little and big
threats which make for good monster movies.
On the other hand I found Godzilla 2000 to be an outstanding entry in
the classic Godzilla run. I loved the "villain" and thought his
standing up to Big G was brave if foolish. The weakness in the story
is the hero's motivations seem kneejerk and unconvincing.
I will have to seek out the original Godzilla.
