About the same time period, I was 7 and my Dad was
always willing to break out the projector for the
neighborhood kids. And every birthday party included
the projector!
Without a doubt, the biggest hit was the Batman 1943
serials. We didn't have all six of 'em, we had about
3, so we had a serious cliffhanger thing going on! It
wasn't until I was about 40 that I got the other reels
and finally got the cliffhanger resolved!
These days, those 8mm Batman serials are STILL a big
hit with adults and kids alike! I've got the complete
serials on video...and they are pretty boring in my
opinion. I think the silent, edited versions work much
better.
The edited 1948 Batman serials are also available on
8mm, but are not seen around as often. Right now on
eBay there's one, I've got it already, called "Embers
of Evil." I think the other one I've got is called
"Flying Spies." Pastel colored boxes with a Batman
logo, the one that spells out Batman in a bat-shaped
silhouette with Batman's face at the top. You've seen
it. Anyone know how many films were put out in that
series? Like I said, I've got two of 'em.
Picked up a sound Super 8 projector a few days ago
real cheap at a thrift store. It's a Bell and Howell,
and it has the best Super 8 sound I've ever heard.
Bought it to re-sell, but now I'm thinking of keeping
it and getting into Super 8 sound. There are some
pretty cool movie adaptations out there on Super 8
sound that look like fun.
