MadCat PREMIERES AND SPECIAL EVENTS
MadCat is proud to present the Northern California Premiere of local
award-winning filmmakers Vicky Funari and Sergio De La Torre¹s
groundbreaking documentary Maquilapolis. This project is about the brutal
conditions of Tijuana's assembly factories, the maquiladoras and how a group
of courageous women have band together to fight the multinational
corporations who run them. MadCat presents the premiere at the Grand Lake
Theater in Oakland, September 21, Tickets $10. This screening is a
fundraiser and will benefit the Wellstone Democratic Club and Global
Exchange. MadCat will also present Maquilapolis in SF at Yerba Buena on Sun,
Sept 24!

The Festival screens the SF premiere of How Little We Know of Our
Neighbours, a new documentary by award-winning filmmaker, Rebecca Baron. How
Little We Know of Our Neighbours is an engrossing study of the Mass
Observation movement in Britain‹an eccentric social science enterprise begun
in 1937 that used hidden cameras to record and scrutinize behavior in public
spaces. Initially concerned with anthropology, the outfit became a civil spy
unit during World War II before re-emerging as a market research firm in the
¹50s. How Little We Know of Our Neighbors considers this fascinating history
of state-sanctioned snooping in relation to contemporary issues of
surveillance and privacy. This film screens in Surveillance Times at ATA on
Fri, Sept 22.

VIEWMASTERS and 3D Films Sept 20 at El Rio
For the first time at MadCat we are proud to host Vladimir and her
Vladmasters. Like Madonna and Cher before her, Vladimir is a one named
wonder to be reckoned with! Vladmasters are viewmasters slide show stories
that she makes by hand. Yes, she sits in her house listening to books on
tape while making hundreds of viewmaster cartridges. She then invites an
uncanny group of musicians and artists to create original scores and
recorded narrations to her delightful and quirky narratives. MadCat will
screen the CA Premiere of her newest feat Fear & Trembling plus others.

3D Films!
Zoe Beloff will be in town with her award-winning 16mm 3D films. Her
projects are philosophical toys, objects to think with. They investigate the
space where technology intersects with unconscious desire. Beloff¹s work has
been exhibited internationally at: MOMA NY and the Whitney Museum, the
Rotterdam Film Festival and the Pompidou Center.

MadCat presents 2 programs by Beloff:
The West Coast Premiere of Charming Augustine ‹ This surreal 3D film was
inspired by a series of photographs and texts on hysteria published in the
1880s by the insane asylum Salpêtrière, in Paris. Based on a case study of
the young Augustine who, at fifteen, was admitted to the hospital after
suffering from hysterical paralysis, the film re-imagines her psychosis,
exploring the connections between the attempts to document her mental states
and the prehistory of narrative film. The doctors were captivated by
Augustine¹s frequent attacks, which appeared extraordinarily theatrical and
photogenic. She became the star, the ³Sarah Bernhardt² of the asylum. To
conjure this era that predates the moving image, Beloff films in a
stereoscopic or 3D format to suggest a different direction that cinema might
have taken had it been invented a decade earlier. Sept 23 at Yerba Buena and
Sept 26 at PFA.

Enter the psycho-fantastical, hyper-colorized world of Claire and Don in
Slumberland. For the first time in San Francisco, Beloff presents this 3D
slide and film projection performance. Narrated by the audio of actual
psychology films from 1949, this bizarre journey follows Claire and Don as
they are hypnotized and asked to allow their subconscious to roam free in ³a
free-floating fever dream of the Cold War era.² Slumberland combines the
futuristic yet wonderfully dated feel of Barbarella with the earnest
scientific films of the 1950s that demonstrate innovations in early
psychology and hypnotism. Beloff transforms the viewing experience by asking
the audience to don 3D glasses and believe in Claire and Don¹s excursion
into the unknown, while simultaneously making a poignant comment on postwar
fear and anxiety. Screening Sept 20 at El Rio.

LIVE MUSIC
Continuing a long running tradition MadCat will yet again embrace silent era
presentation with a series of silent 16mm films set to live music by local
musicians. Silian Rail, Paper Boats, The Secrets of Family Happiness and
Tartufi will perform.

See Movies you wont find anywhere else!
MadCat¹s screenings include diverse thematically-curated shorts programs,
trailblazing documentaries, and slide presentations by local artists.
