An actor has been selected to play Detective Sam Bosco, Teresa
Lisbon's (Robin Tunney) mentor as she was coming up through the ranks
-and whom she even dated for a while at one time.
Total surprise, I can't imagine him as Lisbon's previous love interest.
Patrick Jane should have a field day reading this guy: Former Oz actor
Terry Kinney is joining The Mentalist as an ex of Lisbon's (Robin
Tunney) and a major player in the Red John investigation, sources
confirm to me semi-exclusively.
Kinney, who most recently starred in ABC's short-lived cop dramedy The
Unusuals, will play the recurring role of Sam Bosco, a by-the-book
California Bureau of Investigations agent who heads up the division
overseeing the Red John case. Bosco served as Lisbon's mentor as she was
coming up through the ranks, during which they shtupped once or twice
(or a lot). Further complicating matters: The two share a deep, dark
secret!
Bosco is also one of the few people immune to P.J.'s charms. He hates
his unorthodox methods and is determined to oust him from the CBI.
Good times all around!
Kinney's deal calls for him to appear in at least seven episodes.
The Mentalist kicks off its second season (its first in its new Thursday
time slot) on Sept. 24

Thanks, Tia!
I think that picture doesnt make him any justice, or what I remember of him
in Oz.

Wow, they totally went a different way! I thought they might cast someone who
would be tall, dark and handsome. A bit of an opposite from Patrick Jane, and
could give him a run for the money in the 'hunky' (for lack of a better word!)
department. hmmmm

I'm not familiar with the actor they've chosen for the role. Why another
Australian? I'm sure there are American actors who could fill this part.
I guess I was looking for someone tall, dark and handsome too Lori. Another
Simon, only dark. :-)

According to IMDB, Wikipedia, and other sources, Terry Kinney is an American,
born in Illinois. He was a regular on the 1987-88 iconic series
"thirtysomething." He had hair then. Unfortunately, I found him incredibly
annoying in that and haven't seen him in anything since that changed my mind. Do
I sound grumpy? Well, today my Boston Terrier got tangled in my legs, tripped
me up, I went splat on the ground, sprained my ankle, wrenched my shoulder, and
cracked my head and lay there like a flipped-over bug until my husband heard me
screaming and rescued me. Resting on ice now and still don't like Terry Kinney.

Kinney is not Australian, but he was in the TV show "Oz" which may explain
the confusion. ;)
I haven't seen Oz, but I've seen him in other stuff here and there and he's
a good actor.
I suspect Kinney's casting means that Bosco's arrival does not signal the
beginning of some soapy romantic triangle thing; instead we will be seeing a
clash of personalities on the job and additional conflict when Jane (and
Lisbon) are told the Red John case is no longer their responsibility. In
fact, I anticipate Jane going ballistic. This should be interesting stuff
for Simon as an actor. What happens when the thing you want the most -- the
very thing you live for -- is snatched away from you?
I usually root for the underdog, the over looked one, but in this instance,
NO, he looks too meally and not too attractive to boot, I dont might some
chub, but I just think they could have chosen a better well known person to
play the Ex hottie in Lisbon's life

Well, today my Boston Terrier got tangled in my legs, tripped
me up,I went splaton the ground, sprained my ankle, wrenched my shoulder,
and cracked my head and lay there like a flipped-over bug until my husband heard
me screaming and rescued me. Resting on ice now and still don't like Terry
Kinney. :-+ Shoshie

I'm not familiar with the actor they've chosen for the role. Why another
Australian? I'm sure there are American actors who could fill this part.
I guess I was looking for someone tall, dark and handsome too Lori. Another
Simon, only dark. :-)

Wow, they totally went a different way! I thought they might cast someone who
would be tall, dark and handsome. A bit of an opposite from Patrick Jane, and
could give him a run for the money in the 'hunky' (for lack of a better word!)
department. hmmmm

An actor has been selected to play Detective Sam Bosco, Teresa
Lisbon's (Robin Tunney) mentor as she was coming up through the ranks
-and whom she even dated for a while at one time.

I did watch quite a few episodes of Oz over the years, but don't remember that
particular actor.
Your synopsis of what may happen in the upcoming season sounds right on the
mark. I'd much prefer that to any soppy romantic stuff between the main
characters.
