LPE International Networking Society - LPE Society English aims at
helping Chinese adults learn English in
a more scientific and systematic way, by providing real environmental
learning. At LPE, students build their knowledge through a three-fold
process. They start with language input from computer, then enhance
their knowledge with classroom teaching and finally turn knowledge
into practical skills. Students learn English through real life
scenarios within an environment that makes learning more comfortable
and effective.
Shanghai Independent Film Assn. supports the development of the
independent film industry in Shanghai. It is a not-for-profit group
for creative talents in the independent and amateur film community
where novice filmmakers can learn the art and test their talents with
the support of mentors while experienced filmmakers can screen their
work and get creative feedback in a supportive environment.
Located in Shanghai, one of China's most cosmopolitan cities, ShIFA
brings together local Chinese and international talents to share
culture, ideas and expertise. English is our international language of
choice but whenever possible, bilingual Chinese translation will be
provided to allow participation of both local Chinese and foreign
participants.
It is also designed to motivate the production of new and creative
short films and features through Kino - an ongoing monthly challenge
to produce and share topic-based short films. These films will be
displayed in monthly screenings and the best films will be included in
a talent showcase shown annually
Monthly meetings will include screening that month's submissions as
well as inviting industry professionals, academics and others to
provide interesting and informative discussions.
Non-directors are welcome and encouraged to join in. ShIFA is for
everyone interested in writing, producing, directing, crewing or
acting in films – Chinese or foreign. Amateurs are always encouraged
to join in.

Hi folks,
We will be holding a combined casting call and rehearsal for the upcoming
relaunch of Acting Up on Sat, Aug 11 from 2-5PM at LPE Networking Society, World
Plaza, floor B2 in Pudong. Take exit three at the Dongchang road metro station.
We need 1-3 teams of 4 actors to play a set of 4-5 improv games, with one set
preferrably in Chinese. The games and teams will be largely decided by this
rehearsal, so please try to make it if you'd like to participate. If you are
unable to make it for some reason, but still want to be in the show, please let
me or James know. Also, please bring any suggestions you have for additional
games that encourage audience participation or could involve mixed language. The
performance will be on Friday, Aug 17 at the same location.
Cheers,

I'm actually being proactive in my study of Chinese!! I'm actually looking for a
Chinese instructor, and am meeting Benny, of www.benny.cn. He's kinda of
expensive though!! For one on one...
So if anyone is interested in a group lesson, please contact me. Benny is good,
so worth the money, but I just can't do it alone, nor do I really want to.Or I'd
like to join someone else.
I can say "you have beautiful eyes" but I can't say "I prefer Beijing because it
hung onto it's history" and though I can say "Please take me to the airport" I
can't say "Please tell me your low fat and vegetarian dishes, and please don't
use MSG"
If anyone has a recommendation or referral please share it with me. Or if you
are interested in starting lessons and aren't too far behind (being fluent in
Taxi-nese) then let's talk!!
Thanks,
Hollie

EWT will be relaunching the Acting Up! event on Friday, Aug 17 at the LPE
Networking Society at the Dongchang metro stop on line 2. We would like to
assemble 2-3 of teams of 4 improv actors (one preferrably Chinese speakers) to
do 2-3 sets of "Whose Line is It" style comic improv. There will be a couple of
preparatory rehearsals in the two weeks before the show. We intend for this to
turn into a monthly (or eventually bimonthly or weekly) event, which will also
feature special events such as staged plays, short scenes and monologues, as
well as possibly lectures or workshops on acting related topics. Actors will not
be paid, but it is hoped that this will lead to paying gigs providing
entertainment for corporate parties and bar events. To this end, we hope to
develop a group of 20-30 performers who can be drawn on at fairly short notice
to craft a performance to suit any occasion involving anywhere from 2-20
performers.
To find out more, please contact James Angrave, who will be helping me organize
this event (and the improv arm of EWT), and who has many years experience
organizing and delivering improv performances. James can be reached at:
15901647654 or xiyushanghai@.... Preference will be given to those with
previous improv experience, but we will try to involve everyone with any
interest to help develop their talent in this area for the future. Final casting
will probably be done at the first rehearsal, tentatively scheduled for sometime
during the week of Aug 6. Please provide James with your schedule constraints
for Aug 6 - 17 so we can try to find times that will best suit most people.

Rob Tromp

A film director in Slovenia Michael Benson is finishing his film and
needs an audio to add to a video already taken. The shot was taken in
China - he was shooting 3 young cops for 6 minutes. We have a script
to go with this, 3 cops' inner monologues and now I'm looking for 2
young male and 1 female actor who could help me interpreting and
record this. The text is not too long and shouldn't take too much time.
The only thing is I need this quite soon, this week actually. I would
be gratefull if you could advise me who to turn to and contact.

Do any of you actor types or former audience members have any good

Dear Actors,
My friend Mabel is looking for an actor to play Captain Jack at the
premier of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie on 12 June from
18:30-21:30 at Xin Tian Di. (That will get your picture in the
newspapers!)
The actor will have to provide his own pirate's costume, exactly like
Johnny Depp wears in the second movie Dead Man's Chest. (As I can't
include images in this message, please contact Mabel or me for
pictures.)
For the gig, please contact Mabel directly at mabelng87@....
With kind regards,
Marieke

sorry cannot make tonight.... i spent the morning doing EWT stuff to get
website happening and PR and then found the script in the library since no
bookshops have it (out of print) but i spent all afternoon trying to get it
from the library (some incompetent staff involved) and finally got the copy
of the play from the book.
Since i spent the whole day avoiding any paid work, i really need to do some
real work
also it is going to be hard for me during the performance days since i am
the shanghai correspondent for the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER magazine (Variety
mag's major competitor ) and that is the weekend for the film festival.....
Since Jiu Huo come first, I will have to do it and run after each
performance!!!!!!!!
i would like to help more with running the main show and assuring things run
smoothly but I don't have any real paying job here and i really need to get
some cash, and HR is a great place for me to be for freelance work since it
gives me some great connections......
I feel like i am letting you down tonight but I really am devoting a lot of
time to the EWT.

Hi friends,
Sorry to bug you again, but just wanted to remind you that the karaoke event is
tonight, and update some details. First, the new flyer is attached, where you
will note that the event is sponsored also by our theater company, East West
Theater. We will be sharing information about our next performance, a wonderful
play called "The Dining Room", wherein the 6 actors play 40 parts, from small
children to oldsters, shifting from one scene to the next in the common
framework of an upper class dining room. You will be able to purchase reserve
seats and take a look at the performning space, which will be in the same
facility as the karaoke event.
FYI, drink prices will be as follows:
Beer (glass): 10RMB
Wine: 25RMB
Soda: 10RMB
Water:5RMB
Hope to see many of you there, along with all your friends! For those who
aren't familiar with the place, it's within about 50 feet of the Pudong Nan Lu
exit at the Dongchang Lu stop on line 2.
Cheers,
Rob

Dear Friends of Culture,
Please note that, despite announcements in the media, there will
unfortunately not be an Amateur Performance Night this Thursday May
17th due to renovations of the Dongping Lu location.
I will keep you posted on future performance events.
With kind regards,
Marieke
