Acting Opportunities for Expats in Shanghai!

We are a film and TV production company working on a new show for
Channel Young, a local Shanghai channel, entitled "Big City, Small
Tales." Shot in the style of a documentary, The show will reveal the
everyday life of expat dealing with local cultures in Shanghai. We
are looking for people with interesting stories to come forward and
tell us about them; stories can be short or long, big or narrow in
scope. Ideally, we are most interested in stories that deal with
interactions between laowai and Chinese locals regarding the cultural
differences and misunderstandings that arise from these interactions.
For example, one of our episodes will follow one laowai as he
attempts to rent an apartment in the old French Concession which
shared a bathroom with neighboring Chinese apartments. However, the
foreign man wanted the bathroom for his own private use, and
attempted to persuade the neighboring Chinese families to rent it to
him for a monthly fee and for the locals to use public restrooms
instead. As you can imagine, humorous conflicts and misunderstandings
ensued as the locals screamed, "We don't want money, we want our
toilet!"

The best entries will be selected and featured in the plots of
upcoming shows. Those who submit selected entries will also be
contacted for consideration in acting in a lead role. Whether you
only have small anecdotes to share, or want to tell us your whole
life of adventures in China, we want to hear your stories. Please
recall them explain why you think they could make good episodes for
TV. Entries must be submitted in English to tales.of.laowai@...
by May 19th. Early entries will be given first consideration. Any
questions you have about the show or the entry process are also
welcome at that address. Thank you!

Hi folks,

Sorry for late and possibly multiple notices, but wanted to make sure this got
out to all my many friends here. Due to the deteriorating health of my father,
Rachael and I will be leaving Shanghai a month sooner than planned - this
Saturday. Unfortunately this means we didn't have time to set up a more
leisurely party at our place (which is completely empty as of yesterday), so
we're having it tomorrow at Cotton's on corner of Anting Lu and Jianguo Xi Lu
from 8-11 in one or more of the 2nd floor rooms.

Please RSVP by tomorrow if you're coming, so I can give Cotton a better estimate
of attendance. Hope to see many old friends there!

Cheers,

Rob

Hi friends,

For a variety of reasons, I have decided to resign from my leadership position
in the EWT. It has been wonderful being a small part of what we have all
accomplished in the last 2 years, and I will always treasure the memories of the
fun and friendship we've had together amidst all the obstacles and challenges.

If anyone is interested in continuing the monthly Acting Up event, I'd be happy
to keep organizing this as long as I'm still in Shanghai.

Finally, I'd greatly appreciate any feedback you have that would help me to
become a better leader in the future.

All the best,

Rob

More about Peter Bakowski
Born in Melbourne, to Polish-German immigrants. Bakowski was born
premature, with a hole in the heart, he has survived two heart
operations. His parents ran a delicatessen, and after completing his

opening his own record shop in the early 1980s.
He commenced writing poetry while travelling through Texas in 1983.
His early works, including his first book Thunder Road, Thunder Heart
(1988), show the influence of American Beat writers such as Jack
Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and Charles Bukowski. His poems have appeared
in over one hundred literary magazines worldwide, predominantly in
English but also in Arabic, German, Japanese, Polish, Spanish and
French. He has lived in Melbourne and London, and travelled widely

set in Paris, Transylvania, the Upper Volga, Uzbekistan and Sarajevo.
Raised a Catholic, in 1994 he married Helen Bourke, an Irish-
Australian seamstress. They live in Melbourne with their son Walter.

ABOUT THE PLAY:
Our Country's Good chronicles the journey of the first British
convicts transported to the furthest place known to man in 1787:
Australia. These unwilling pioneers find themselves trapped between
slow starvation, the brutality of the soldiers guarding them, and the
terrors of this strange and wild new land. This unusual and
enlightening undertaking was the winner of the Laurence Olivier Play
of the Year Award in 1988. A rare and unique evening of theater, Our
Country's Good is at once distressing and uplifting, vicious and
hopeful, desperate and reassuring as it affirms the power of art and
the indomitable nature of the human spirit.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Well I have news that many who know me will find amazing!!!

My mother is coming to see me in China!!! Yes, my mother!

She arrives on Oct 1 and leaves on the 9th, which leads me to the next bit of
amazing news. I also leave that day.

Yes, I'm leaving China. I'm moving to Australia to pursue studies of hairstyling
and coloring. I'll be living in the Gold Coast region with a friend there.

I will come back to visit in a year if all goes well, and if it really goes
well, I might be back to work not too much longer after. ;-)

Anyway, I am going to miss my closest friends and the fun I have with all of
you. I hope everyone who is here will try to come to a farewell party I hope is
being planned - last weekend in September!!

Since I'm going to Australia I am unable to take the loving Dominic with me. I'm
really upset about this as I am very attached. The only options are to give him
over to someone in Singapore or Hong Kong where I needs to go into quarantine
and then live for 6 months before being admitted to AU. If anyone thinks they
can or knows someone who would be willing to help me with this I'd appreciate
the referral and/or assistance, and we should talk!

Otherwise Dominic needs a new home. :( The SCAA will help find him a home or
foster home after the 7th, but I would prefer he live with someone I KNOW will
love him as he deserves.

Unfortunately, if no one is interested in taking Dominic, I will need a cat
sitter from Oct 3-7 while I am traveling with my mom around China. The crazy
woman is going to subject me to travel during the holiday - let's hope I can
survive!! hehe...

I will be resigning from work on Monday so PLEASE - no public postings on
facebook until after you see me post there. Thanks much.

Much love,
Hollie

There is about 6 months left on the lease of a small but great apartment located
off Nanjing Rd, right neat Shanxi Rd.

1 bedroom/1 bath, furnished, and only 5-10 min walk to the metro, with buses to
Bund or Gubei even closer. Shopping galore, conveniences in the complex. The
Portman, City Diner, Bi-Feng Tang, Wagas, Starbucks, an HK restaurant, and free
delivery from the best and cheapest Thai in town are all convenient. And some of
the most popular bars are even walking distance.

Rent is 3300/mo for a new lease, but if you take over the remaining 6 months you
can have it for only 3000/mo. Must sign before Sept 30 for move in on a day
between Oct 1- Oct 9.

Please call me for more details. It's perfect for a single or a close couple.

Hi folks,

We will be having a rehearsal/new game planning session for the next Acting Up
night on Sunday, Sept 8, at the LPE Networking Society (same place as the
performances), from 2-4PM. Please come if you are interested in being part of
the show. We will select the best 4-8 actors from each language (English and
Chinese) to be the participants for 1 or 2 sets of games in each language. The
performance will be on Wed, Sept 12 from 7-9 in the same place. Henry Sun will
lead the Chinese improv again, while Brandon will take over leading the English
session to give me a chance to be a participant. Please RSVP, so we know about
how many people to expect.

Also, if you know anyone wishing to volunteer to help serve drinks and collect
money, please have them come at 1PM on Sunday, when we will have a planning
session for the volunteers.

Cheers,

Rob

LPE International Networking Society - LPE Society English aims at
helping Chinese adults learn English in
a more scientific and systematic way, by providing real environmental
learning. At LPE, students build their knowledge through a three-fold
process. They start with language input from computer, then enhance
their knowledge with classroom teaching and finally turn knowledge
into practical skills. Students learn English through real life
scenarios within an environment that makes learning more comfortable
and effective.

Shanghai Independent Film Assn. supports the development of the
independent film industry in Shanghai. It is a not-for-profit group
for creative talents in the independent and amateur film community
where novice filmmakers can learn the art and test their talents with
the support of mentors while experienced filmmakers can screen their
work and get creative feedback in a supportive environment.

Located in Shanghai, one of China's most cosmopolitan cities, ShIFA
brings together local Chinese and international talents to share
culture, ideas and expertise. English is our international language of
choice but whenever possible, bilingual Chinese translation will be
provided to allow participation of both local Chinese and foreign
participants.

It is also designed to motivate the production of new and creative
short films and features through Kino - an ongoing monthly challenge
to produce and share topic-based short films. These films will be
displayed in monthly screenings and the best films will be included in
a talent showcase shown annually

Monthly meetings will include screening that month's submissions as
well as inviting industry professionals, academics and others to
provide interesting and informative discussions.

Non-directors are welcome and encouraged to join in. ShIFA is for
everyone interested in writing, producing, directing, crewing or
acting in films – Chinese or foreign. Amateurs are always encouraged
to join in.
