Improvisation for Self-Acceptance
------------------------------------
A Ten Week Drama Therapy Group

In theatre improvisation, every player is vital, and mistakes are viewed as
moments of risk-taking genius. Similarly, in life, bold choices are
sometimes necessary, and mistakes have the potential of becoming
transformative learning experiences.

In a supportive environment, you will learn how to affirm all parts of
yourself, acknowledge and break through the inner critic, and
unconditionally accept yourself and others. Through moment-to-moment
improvisational theatre exercises, you can discover how to surrender your
impulses to the perfection of the present moment.

No previous acting or improvisational theatre experience necessary. Shy
people are welcome!

"Wow! That was so worth the time and energy. When I make it big....I am gonna
make sure you get props! It's so difficult to find people who really care about

"After several years behind the camera I decided to get back to acting again and
Glorinda was invaluable in getting me back up to speed on how things work these

"Since we spoke I have gotten an agent, been the lead vocalist in a play, done a
cabaret showcase. I am currently in rehersal most nights for another play and
going out
on auditions of course....Non stop since we spoke. I believe that get bizzzy is
so
concentrated that you cannot help but get bizzzy afterwards. You explanations on

fantastic. You
made me feel like I can do it. Like it was simple just do the steps. Had a l -2

"The actors here in the Bay Area are so very lucky to have a person like
Glorinda. This talented bizzzy gal always made time to answer any questions and
was
there for me when I didn't know which way to go. Take classes with her and you
will find
that her energy inspires you to reach for your goals. Her kindness and spirit

"Glorinda Marie is a wonderful consultant who recently helped me in my quest to
move from study to practice as an actor. She is a working actress who is
extraordinarily well informed about the business side of acting and securing
work. Given
the amount of guidance and valuable information I received, her rates are truly
bargain.
But wait! It doesn't stop there. It's Glorinda's spirit: genuinely enthusiastic,
generous,
and energetic, that comprises the icing on the cake. Her love of acting and her
desire to
help and encourage her fellow actors, no matter how inexperienced, makes the
session
come alive and contextualizes the mountains of facts and techniques she presents
to the
client. She was even kind enough to recommend me to an indie filmmaker with whom
I
subsequently worked. Glorinda's the real deal and a joy to work with. I can
recommend her
without reservation." ~ Joel Roth, Actor

I've gotten a lot of emails asking me how You Must Act!
is different from all the other acting information that's
'out there.'

The best explanation is this: Most everything you learn
about acting is about how to act. You Must Act! is about
how to become a successful professional actor.

That's why I call it an ACTING CAREER COURSE.

You Must Act! is a computer-based course that clarifies
the methods, techniques, strategies, and skills used by
successful actors - to accomplish well-paying careers in
the entertainment industry.

(It works on all personal computers.)

By the way these are not the same old shopworn "tips"
you've probably seen all over the internet. This is
vital information from a show biz insider - info that
according to Emmy Winner Robert Guillaume ... "propels
actors to amazing and exciting results."

Remember, show business is 2 words - and the business
part is crucial to your advancement.

You Must Act! has been called:

"The Actor's Bible"

"A blueprint for success in this industry"

"The most practical and useful manual on show business
I have ever read."

"The quintessential actor's road map."

If you'd like to find out why so many actors feel this
way - you should visit our home page and take some time
to discover what this unique course has in store for you.

Tony Winner Rene Auberjonois (Star of Boston Legal, Star
Trek, M*A*S*H, The Patriot, and many others) had this to
say about You Must Act! ...

"What an achievement! What a GOLD MINE of essential
information! Bravo! It's the kind of stuff I wish
had been available in one package when I was stumbling
around trying to get started."

Fox TV Star William August said this ...

"Every actor who is committed to becoming a star, must
read this ... You will feel vindicated, as I did, that
your dreams, and all the work you are doing to attain
those dreams, are justified. Your work and this course
will pay off ... BIG TIME."

You Must Act! works for actors of all ages and all stages
of career development. In other words it can help you if
you're just getting started - and it can help if you are
in mid-career and your booking rate is stalled.

I get lots of great comments from readers and users:

"What it contains is worth millions."

"I feel like the power is back in my hands."

"I'm just thrilled with the results I've gotten."

"I finally spent money on something fruitful. Thanks."

"It's been a sanity saver."

"So motivating and down to earth."

"You Must Act has had a profound effect on my career.
I cannot thank you enough."

(You can read lots of letters from actors all over the
world who are thrilled with the results they've gotten
from the course - on our home page.)

So, why not join thousands of actors world-wide who have
discovered that good information, explicit success
techniques, and no-nonsense, practical, step-by-step
instructions - can put the power back into your hands.
The power to take effective action and dramatically
improve your acting career.

If you MUST act ... go to the site now, and check it out.

Subject: "LOOKS" or "TALENT"
bob_fraser_2000
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

I recently got a letter from a young actor in Kentucky.
She wrote that an agent in Atlanta had told her she
was definitely cut out to be an actor - that she had
"the look."

But to get started she would need classes and pictures
which the "agency" would happily provide - for a fee.

Then, a friend of hers, who has been acting "for years"
told her that she wasn't very talented and that without
talent she would waste a lot of time and money chasing
after a dream. The 'friend' went on to explain that
talent was the main component of all successful acting
careers.

This young actor got two pieces of bad advice.

The first bit of advice was from a scammer, running a
scam - period. The second bit of advice is the one I'd
like to talk about - because it was uninformed, mean,
and just plain wrong.

Webster's Unabridged Dictionary defines 'talent' thusly:
1. a gift committed to one's trust to use and improve;
from the parable of the talents, in St. Matthew; hence
any natural faculty, ability or power. 2. a special,
superior ability in an art, mechanics, learning, etc.

While I agree in theory with Webster - there is a common
misconception among some 'helpful' agents, teachers,
talent managers and (unfortunately) actors, that there
exists a natural actor gene - or as Webster puts it,
"a special superior ability."

Since all human beings act - behaving, emoting, reacting,
listening and slipping in and out of attitudes every day
(all skills of a professional actor) ... why is it that
these "special superior abilities" are rarely quantified
or explained?

The idea that some people should just forget it because
they aren't "talented" - or that others should go ahead
because they have "the look" - needs to be dispelled
by those of us who know the truth about what it REALLY
takes to have a professional acting career.

I never address the question of whether someone is cut
out for the business of acting because I have learned
through long hard experience that I don't know who is -
or who isn't - going to succeed.

I don't really believe that anyone can say. There are
just too many variables.

As William Goldman so aptly put it, "Nobody knows."

This much I do know, I have seen actors who were clearly
"talented" or "gorgeous" end up teaching second grade -
and people with little "talent" or who were, to put it
nicely, "looks challenged" - go right to the top.

Telling a young (or even not so young) actor that it's
all about "talent" or "looks" is not only not correct,
it's not very smart.

When I first started my acting career, I couldn't act
a lick. And I'm far from a babe magnet. But I've made
millions as an actor - and many more millions hiring
actors.

My point is simply this: Any reason to go ahead - or
give up - should be questioned thoroughly.

Common sense tells us that if acting were a "natural"
ability there would be no need of acting teachers,
acting coaches, or "acting tracks" at universities.

Of course, acting is not an easy business. It is more
difficult than most professions. But the gap between
"talented" and "not so talented" is as thin as Paris
Hilton's resumé.

As everyone who reads my stuff knows, I try to make it
very plain that this is really hard work. Few achieve
stardom. More actors can achieve a career, but it is
still a small percentage of those who think they'd
like to act professionally.

Not all of the successful actors on screen and stage
are "natural talents" or even passably good looking.
Some are just better at the business part - or they
stay at it longer than others.

As I point out in my acting career courses, there are
specific steps you must take to have real success.

The first step is to rid yourself of all the 'walls'
you build up - or allow others to build. Because it
is those 'walls' that keep you from taking the steps
you need to take, to accomplish your dream.

As with all dreams (sports, music, writing, dance,
architecture, medicine, or having the biggest ball
of string in the world) - it will not become real
without ACTION on your part.

If you believe that there are 'reasons' you will or
won't succeed, you simply won't do what needs to be
done. That's why I say (not to be too obvious) ...
You Must Act!

Don't accept any 'reasons' to pursue or give up a dream
without a complete investigation into whether those
'reasons' are real - or an illusion of reality.

The truth is: REALITY IS NOT OPTIONAL.

Hi,

Just wanted to drop a note to the group to talk about a
book I found that's just amazing.

It's Self Management For Actors by Bonnie Gillespie.

This book is filled with all kinds of great advice about
running your acting career and it's really well written.
This is the third edition so I guess it's been around for
awhile - but I just found it. If you're the kind of actor
I am and you want to be pro-active at running your career
then this is the book for you.

Here's a link to get it at a discount on Amazon ...

I'm new to the group and I'm an actress in California. I signed up because I
like to 'meet'
other actors and hear about our experiences in the business.

As an introduction, I'd like to share a few 'freebees' I've found on the net
that might be
helpful.

Judy Kerr is an author and acting coach and she has a cool site. Her book Acting
Is
Everything is just filled with great info for actors in Hollywood - but on her
site you can
download several free things that help actors including articles about building
an acting
reel, a list of show biz related sites and she has several video interviews with
industry
people. Definitely worth the trip. www.actingiseverything.com

Another good site is www.monologueaudition.com which is run by Karen Kohlhaas
who
teaches at The Atlantic Theatre company in New York. She has several neat things
on the
site including a list of overdone monologues and she has a free newsletter about
acting
auditions and monologues.

Anyway, I'll try to share more things in the future and look forward to
networking with
other members of the group. By the way, if anyone else knows of any actor
'freebees'
please send the info my way. Thank you.

Bye.

When I was 10 years old, my mom enrolled me in formal swimming
lessons. Up until that time, I had always loved the water and was a
bit of a fish, but now it was time for me to learn the proper way to swim.

The lessons lasted about 4 weeks and soon after that, the head
instructor came to my parents and asked them if he could put me on the
swim team. By the end of that summer, I was the regional conference
champion in backstroke, and by age 12 I was training for the Olympics.

For the next 7 years, I set swimming records and remained the regional
backstroke champion. No one could beat me. Then, at the age of 18
(my last year of eligibility on this particular swim team), as we were
driving to the final conference championship, a single thought crossed
my mind that had never crossed it before: "What if I lose?"

For 8 years straight I had won this event. And in those 8 years I had
never even considered the possibility of losing this race. Now,
however, I found myself thinking about the fact that this was my last
year on this team; I started getting sad about that fact, and I
started thinking about how I would feel if I lost.

It wasn't a good feeling and I did my best to shake it, as I swam the
other 2 individual events in which I was entered (50 yard Butterfly
and 100 yard Individual Medley). Then it came time for MY RACE, the
50 yard Backstroke. We got in the pool, the gun went off and the race
was on. The first 45 yards of the race were fine, but as I took my
final three strokes, the thought of losing once again crossed my mind,
and sure enough, my mind took hold of that fear and I lost the race by
.01 seconds. Unbelievable!

I think I may have won a couple of other events (I was entered in 5
altogether), but honestly, as far as I was concerned, this was the
ONLY race that mattered. And after 8 straight years of being the best
swimmer in this event, all it took was one moment of fear, and I now
found myself in the spot of "second best." I was crushed.

The power that fear can have over us can be enormous, if we let it be.
The key, however, is that it can only have the amount of power that
we give to it. If we give it a lot of power, it can keep us frozen
and prevent us from moving forward.

On the other hand, if we acknowledge it, but don't allow ourselves to
dwell on it, and instead choose to continue moving steadily forward,
we can get past the fear.

There's no question about the fact that pursuing an acting career is a
scary concept. As actors, some of the fears we face including: being
too old; not being good enough; not knowing where to start in pursuing
our career; not having an agent; not getting the job; not living in LA
or NY in order to pursue a career; blowing the audition; not knowing
where to take class; not succeeding; not becoming famous, and the list
goes on and on and on.

So, how does you get past the fear? The first step is to acknowledge
it, because you can't deal with it until you actually acknowledge that
it's present.

Secondly, you list it, in order to know exactly what it is.
Auditions? Money? Lack of representation? Make a list so you know
exactly how many fears, and what fears, you're dealing with.

Next, you name. That's right – give each one of your fears a personal
name, so that every time it rears its ugly head, you can call it by
name. Afraid of not being good enough when you audition for something?
Call it George, so that when you're on an audition and that fear comes
up, you can say something like: "Oh, that's just George, stopping by
to say Hello. Hi George! Bye George."

And finally, create a phrase or mantra for yourself (mine is "Cancel
That") so that anytime you feel fear coming on, you can continue to
tell yourself to "cancel that" (or whatever your mantra is), until the
fear goes away. It may take 50 times of saying your mantra, but
eventually it WILL go away, and as time goes on, it will begin to get
easier and easier to eliminate the fearful thoughts that cross your mind.

Dealing with fear will take some work on your part. And while it
won't happen overnight, you CAN find a way to start taking control of
your fears and letting them go. You can do this. I know you can. So
start today and let me know how it goes!

~Sharon
