SUNDAY 11/09

1) FOR THE SCREENWRITER'S ON THIS LIST: The Art & Business of Screenwriting!

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?: So you've got a great idea for a screenplay. Now what?
Getting into screenwriting takes more than just a good idea. It even takes more
than a good script. But despite what you might hear, it is possible to write
for Hollywood while living far far away from it in the idyllic Northwest. Hear
from the biggies of screenwriting here in the area about what it takes to
succeed. Scheduled to appear:
Mike Rich (Finding Forrester, The Rookie), Chris Matheson (The Wise Ones,
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Evil Alien Conquerors), Chris McQuarie (The
Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun). This is a rare opportunity to gain
knowledge
from three of the most successful screenwriters in the business! Sunday,
November 9th @ Portland's Guild Theatre (SW 9th St & Taylor, PORTLAND! ADMISSION
$7, FREE WITH PAID ADMISSION TO EVIL ALIEN CONQUERORS. (Evil Alien Conquerors
screens at 2:00 p.m.; panel discussion starts at 4:00)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
2) FREE MOVIE: Hooked (Meet Director Todd Ahlberg!)

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?: Please visit Seattle's Asian Art Museum website for more
details.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
3) SCARY THEATER: Dracula!

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?: Just because Halloween is once again a thing of the past
is no reason to ignore this excellent adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula
. The music is great, as well as the acting, the set design, and the
direction. One of its many satisfying attributes is that the English solicitor,
who is
a business guest in the count's castle, is not agreeable. He, like Dracula, is
pompous--and so it's not a matter of good versus evil, but a naturally
unpleasant person versus a supernaturally unpleasant person. (Seattle Center
House
Theatre, 216-0833. $15-$22. Thurs-Sat at 7:30 pm, Sun at 2 pm. Through Nov 16.
)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
4) MOVIE EVENT: The Real Old Testament

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?: Straight from 2003 Slamdance Film Festival, this is the
story of several humans who were picked to live in a garden and have their lives
taped. Done in the reality-TV style of Survivor and MTV's The Real World, God
chooses Abraham for a special covenant. Abe's initial enthusiasm dims when he
finds out the covenant involves circumcision. Then Abe has to talk the other
men of his tribe into the covenant, and he has to actually perform the
circumcisions. We've got it all on tape, along with candid interviews. It’s
the story
of what happens when biblical patriarchs stop being hallowed religious
figures and start getting real. @ Consolidated Works. 500 Boren Ave N. (206)
381-3218. 8:00 p.m. All films $7 at the door, $5 for members.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MONDAY 11/10
1) FILM RAP: Veteran's Day
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?: Our beloved Warren Etheridge salutes the men (and women!)
who fought for our country by scrutinizing their portrayals on film with
author Emmett Earley. Admission is FREE! @ University BookStore (4326 University
Way NE, Seattle) —7:00pm
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
2) FREE MOVIE: Shattered Glass!
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?: This film tells the true story of fraudulent Washington,
D.C. journalist Stephen Glass (Hayden Christensen), who rose to meteoric
heights as a young writer in his 20s, becoming a staff writer at "The New
Republic"
for three years (1995-1998), where 27 of his 41 published stories were either
partially or completely made up. Looking for a short cut to fame, Glass
concocted sources, quotes and even entire stories, but his deception did not go
unnoticed forever, and eventually, his world came crumbling down. Also stars
Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny, Steve Zahn, and Hank Azaria. @ The Harvard
Exit
(807 E Roy St, Seattle) --7:00pm
WHY SHOULD YOU SEE IT?: Thus far, the movie has garnered very positive
reviews. It might be worth checking out.
HOW DO YOU OBTAIN TICKETS?: [Omitted...for members only!]
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
3) FOR THE FILMMAKERS ON THIS LIST: Open Screening!
WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Bring down your videos on VHS and DVD and show them to all!
Less than 10 minutes please, VHS and DVD only. Hosted by Greg D'Elia. @ 911
Media Arts Center. 8pm $1 (Cheap!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TUESDAY 11/11

1) FOR THE SCREENWRITER'S ON THIS LIST: Salon Mudede!

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?: If there's a case to be made for America's criminal
indifference to sincere erudition, the argument would have to begin with the
name
"Charles Mudede." A screenwriter, author, and impressive alcoholic, the man can
comfortably wax academic on all of the great themes--from Nabokov to Ja
Rule--and yet is forced to squander his genius in the middling pages of this
here
unremarkable fish wrapper. Mudede is finally bathed in the spotlight he so
rightly deserves with Salon Mudede, a weekly roundtable of rotating local
luminaries discussing all things cerebral--beginning with tonight's topic,
"Birth &
Death." (Capitol Hill Arts Center, 1621 12th Ave, 568-0728, 8 pm, $7. )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WEDNESDAY 11/12
1) ONSTAGE INTERVIEW: Michael Chabon!
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?: The first major event of the Nextbook Writers Series is a
lecture and interview with Michael Chabon, author of The Mysteries of
Pittsburgh, Wonder Boys, and the Pulitzer Prize- winning The Amazing Adventures
of
Kavalier & Clay, among other books. Nextbook, whose purpose is to promote Jewish
culture and literature, is the organization that lured former Seattle Arts &
Lectures executive director Matt Brogan back to New York City earlier this
summer. Brogan is back in town tonight; he will be the one asking the questions.
(
Benaroya Hall, Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, 200 University St,
425-369-3298 for info, 7:30 pm, tickets required, 888-621-2230 for reservations,
free
.)
than spreading good cheer, the duo's motive is to rob each establishment, a
