RE: [sanada_fans] Re: Favourites

Well, I've finally just seen him in both 'Rush Hour 3' and 'Sunshine' which I picked up when they were released here on DVD. I thought he looked great in both, and I have to say it was so COOL to see him again in a couple of major Western films... not that I don't enjoy his other work, far from it, but English-language films are just so much easier to find here AND it seems to be the beginning of a trend of him getting more work internationally, which is fantastic.

I enjoyed 'Sunshine' well enough, although it kind of lost me at the end - not the way the story turned out, but there was a lot of quirky editing and lighting and effects that I suppose had some point but for me it just started to get annoying and made it even harder to figure out what exactly was going on, or, more precisely, exactly what the point was of all the visual quirkiness... in retrospect I'm wondering if it was supposed to be from the point of view of the 'extra' crewmember whose vision would've been screwed up due to, um, well, if you've seen it that would be obvious, if not, I won't say anything to ruin the ending even more than I just did.

'Rush Hour 3' I really, REALLY enjoyed, I thought he was great in it but I also liked the first two 'Rush Hour' films and I like Jackie Chan too so I expected it to be a lot of fun and it was. For those of you thinking of buying it who haven't already, I got the widescreen version with a bonus disk - I think it might be a 'special edition' or something and it has a lot of different features, and there are some snippets of interviews with Sanada-san in the 'making of' feature, also of course video of him on set while they were filming.

I'm thinking of getting a copy of 'The Promise' - finally - but I've noticed when looking online that the US DVD release has been cut by about 20 minutes, and I have no idea what was cut... does anyone know? I'll probably look for an import DVD with the Asian release version, which is uncut. I don't know why they'd need to cut it for the US release, since it's likely that only people who are fans of Asian cinema are going to buy it or rent it over here, and those folks are unlikely to be upset by an extra 20 minutes of run-time or some kind of content that was deemed unsuitable for US tastes (and given the kinds of things that DO get made and released over here, I can't imagine what would need to be cut in terms of content).

I like his look in these pieces too! However, two favorites of mine
are not in films, but in tv dramas. They're called "Konna Koi no
Hanashi" or "A Story of Love". He just looked so young and yummy.
