Yes, Sanada san did his own acting and speaking in "The Promise." Originally, I believe they'd considered dubbing his voice, with a native speaker, but he was able to learn the language sufficiently to be able to do it himself, so that is his voice, and not anyone else's. I love his voice, and prefer watching his movies with him speaking, rather than voice-overs by other actors. I can always read the subtitles :-).
