thanks for the welcome satang and lyn! hey traci! hi everybody!
i don’t know if the film is not out in the philippines yet... but i saw it late in december last year and i thought it was a good fantasy film. i was a bit diappointed with the special effects though, hearing that it is a very expensive film. but the promise promises (lol!) a rare story and great characters, who i just realized are all symbolic. (i.e., general guan ming, played by our sanada-san, representing authority and a man’s struggle with passion or love and ambition or duty.)
with an engrossing story and
fascinating characters, i found the film to be very entertaining. it has humor, art and action... and one of the film’s greatest assets are the actors... sanada-san in particular! his award as “an actor who can truly act” is indeed well-deserved. the chinese are saying his mandarin was excellent too, though i can’t tell as i’m not familiar with mandarin (as the chinese here use fukien)... he also has this manner of speaking or expressing himself that i find hard to explain... what i find easy to share is how he sounds: very... er... manly, very general guan ming! hehe. i don’t know what’s with his voice (or maybe sanada-san’s character) that someone my age find very pleasant and attractive.
anyway...
the story revolves mostly around the general, his
slave and a beautiful woman. not your average love triangle. hehe. the story has something to do with a goddess making a bet with the general... slave kun lun getting the general into trouble... the beautiful woman charming many men... the general falling in love... the slave giving up his secret wishes for his loyalty and love for his master and the beautiful woman... a duke who also wants the beautiful woman... a mysterious assassin sent to kill the general and take his armour... yadda, yadda... hehe. sorry to be so vague and messy. there’re several good points in the story. symbolic.
what i like about the promise is how daring it is. the film is getting many negative reviews, but it is truly something people who love art, unusual stories, like foreign films, are simply intrigued or want something fresh to watch or are sanada-san fans like us should
watch.
and though the version i saw was entirely in mandarin and our translator’s english wasn’t very accurate, i still understood everything. thanks to the actors! i did feel the emotions of their characters... especially in the parts with the beautiful woman, qing chen, and general guang ming. and speaking of...! they combined the 2 versions of the love scene in the film... the 1 with the so called special clothes and the 1 where sanada-san’s body was bare. the love scene looked so real that it shocked me at 1st. but maybe its just because i’ve never really been exposed to love scenes, being raised in a filipino home, going to an all-girl catholic school and just turning 18. lol.
what do you think of the film, satang? =)
