The Essential guide was written before Episode 1 came out, so I think that
the author made this bit of information up to connect Owen Lars to Obi-wan,
and give Obi a reason to give Luke to Lars to raise.

If this is true, then Anakin would be Obi-wan's step brother, just like
Owen.
