Hey all,

I read this morning that some director JP Dutta is intending on
remaking Umrao Jaan (UJ) which stared our lovely lady Re.

All i want to ask is WHY?

Why this sudden craze about remaking classic (true gems in fact)
movies with todays 'not so talented actors'?. Who is in the frame to
play the new UJ? Priyanka Chopra!! The girl will need to take Urdu
classes for years.

Re was super in the role and although she perfected her grasp of
urdu for the movie her 'bolneh ka andazz' before the film was always
wonderful.

This whole remake palava i think started with Devdas then came
Bagbaan (which was a remake of some Shabana Azmi/Rajesh Khanna film.
Biwi No 1 which was a lighter version of Arth. I hear that Don, The
Great Gambler and now UJ are on the cards - how many more?

Is Bollywood running so thin on new material that intead of
rehashing Hollywood flicks its now turned on its own?

They cannot do UJ, that movie is all about Rekha, the costumes, the
jewellery, her mannerisms, the dances/songs and the intensely
emotional scenes. Even today when you listen to the ghazels all you
see is Rekha, and i'd like it to stay that way.

MODERATOR: I just read this news online at indiafm.com and its the stupidest
idea yet. Priyanka, despite her appeal, just hasn't shown Rekha's acting range
and though she's cute, she isn't traditionally beautiful like Rekha was/is! More
than that, the film saw success due to its music and the fact Rekha was the No:1
actress at that time. Priyanka's too new... unless they sex it up or something,
i just don't see how this film will find an audience.
