Rachael Atlanta Stirling was born to Scottish landowner Archie Stirling and actress Diana Rigg on May 30th, 1977. She has two older half-brothers William and Ludo(vic) and one younger half-brother.
She studied History of Art at Edinburgh University gaining her degree but decided en route that she wanted to become an actress.
She started acting with the National Youth Theatre appearing in such plays as: Othello;The Odd Couple and Dancing at Lughnasa - the latter two at the Arts Theatre in London's West End.
Her professional theatre credits include: Helpless; Anna in the Tropics; Theatre of Blood; A Woman of No Importance; Tamburlaine; Look Back in Anger and most recently in 2007 Uncle Vanya and The Taming of the Shrew at the wonderful Wilton's Music Hall in London's East End where the musical hall scenes from 'Tipping the Velvet'were filmed.
Her film credits include: Still Crazy; Maybe Baby; The Triumph of Love; Freeze Frame; Complicity; Redemption Road, The Truth.
For TV she is more than well-known for playing Nan Astley in Tipping the Velvet and other appearances include: Riot at the Rite; Poirot; Miss Marple; The Final Quest; Hotel Babylon; Bait and In The Beginning in which she played the younger Rebekah and her mother played the older Rebekah. She also appeared in Beyond which was a pilot for a US TV sci-fi series.
2009: Eliza in 'Pygmalion' in Hong Kong with Peter Hall's company. 'The Young Victoria' playing the part of the Duchess of Sutherland. 'Minder' 5 (UK), and 'Boy Meets Girl' a 4-parter with Martin Freeman, Angela Griffin and Marshall Lancaster beginning on ITV May 1st.
